TIMES OF MYSTERY AND HOPE

Me and ghosts. I've always thought this one sounds so much like a jazz club in NYC. I can smell the perfume, stale beer and cigarettes.

The four month old Richard Terence Reeves provided the laughter for the intro.  

As far back as I can remember the Reeves family were always big on Christmas. We were not a particularly well-off family (we lived in publicly-owned housing) but my Mum, Dad and Nan always made it the most special of times. Dad would make sure that we had both a barrel of beer and comprehensive choice of beverage to welcome any visitors who might call round to celebrate the holiday season. Friends and family we may not have seen in many a long year would be sure to visit and all were welcomed.

The house itself was always bedecked with paper-chains and Christmas lights (a tradition I have continued at my family home to this day), the crowning glory being the tree, at the base of which were a cornucopia of presents, the opening of which began every Christmas Day.  After that it was a continuous celebration of food, drink, music and games.  By the time the evening rolled around, we’d switch on the telly to enjoy all of the Christmas Specials, after which the board game marathons would usually start.

As we all grew older, Bri & Gal started to play instruments, giving rise to the annual family sing-song. In 1969, we recorded one of these on our old Grundig reel-to-reel, a small selection of which have been included on the above track (see: https://soundcloud.com/mountain-songs/xmas-at-home-with-the-von?si=2317d359e0f6482ebeb6662a88d5148b). 

During the later Norman Chop years, when the band became a duo, Brian & Katy opened their own folk club (the Palais de Folk) at the now defunct Derby Arms pub, Shene and built up a very decent following, enabling them to book some of the finest acts on the then thriving folk club circuit.  In 1975, they decided to recall erstwhile members of the band (Gal & Steve Jinks)for their Christmas Party.  It turned out to be one of the best nights the club ever experienced and the place was filled by an enthusiastic, overflowing crowd. I was there that night and will never forget how brilliant it was, wishing I could be up on stage as the fifth member of the band - hence the chorus of the song. 

As always, we owe Hans so much for pulling together all of the strands involved and for making them gel with such a bittersweet resonance.  We do hope you enjoy our Christmas song. (Terry Reeves)

'"Hope" is the thing with feathers is one of the best known of Emily Dickinson's poems. An extended metaphor, it likens the concept of hope to a feathered bird that is permanently perched in the soul of every human. There it sings, never stopping in its quest to inspire.

Emily Dickinson wrote this poem in 1862, a prolific year for her poetry, one of nearly 1,800 poems she penned during her lifetime. Only seven of these were published while she was still alive. Her sister, Lavinia, collected and helped publish all of her poems after Emily's death in 1886.

Her poetry was highly original but was dismissed or simply misunderstood when she sent her work out for appraisal or publication. It was only after she had passed away and her poems circulated more widely that critics began to appreciate her genius.

"Chan Chan" is a 1984 son composition by Cuban trovador Compay Segundo. It was first recorded in 1985 by Compay Segundo's own group. In 1987, he approached Eliades Ochoa, who agreed to record a version with the Cuarteto Patria. However, EGREM did not release these recordings until the second half of the 1990s. In November 1995, Compay recorded a new version in Madrid for his Antología, released on CD the following year. In March 1996, Compay Segundo, Eliades Ochoa and other veteran Cuban musicians recorded a new version of the song as part of the Buena Vista Social Club project. The song became the opening track of their eponymous album and the group's signature song, thereby achieving international fame.

Lyrically, the song is set on the beach and revolves around two central characters called Juanica and Chan Chan. The most complete explanation says: 'The song relates the story of a man and a woman (Chan Chan and Juanica) who are building a house, and go to the beach to get some sand. Chan Chan collects the sand and puts it on the jibe (a sieve for sand). Juanica shakes it, and to do so she shakes herself, making Chan Chan embarrassed. [...] The origin of this tale is a farmer song learnt by Compay Segundo when he was twelve years old.

The most recognizable part of the song is its chorus, whose lyrics are as follows:

Oddrun Eikli is the singer in Loops and Bridges. A project headed by Oddrun Eikli and Arne Hiorth. Oddrun Eikli sings, composes the melodies and writes the lyrics , Arne Hiorth does the arranging trumpet work and studio engineering.
