Buckle up, friends! This week’s RIPEcast takes us back to an epic set from Breakfast of Champions x It’s A New Day 2023. We’re thrilled to share this live mix from legendary pioneer of bass n beats, Freestylers! This set absolutely mashed the dance floor with old school vibes and new school flavor. Huge thanks to Freestylers for not only sharing these massive tunes with the BoC party, but letting us bring it to you on the podcast as well.

Freestylers - Live @ BoC + IAND 2023 - RIPEcast

This set was first performed on January 1st 2024 in San Francisco at the Breakfast of Champions block party on the Space Cowboys main stage.

A RE:CONSTRUCTED set is a *long* way removed from a standard DJ set. It's a live/hybrid set.

Simon takes hundreds of tracks from his huge library, painstakingly deconstructs them (using Ai if needed to separate elements from the original tracks), and then pieces everything back together to create a hugely emotive and immersive musical story.

He uses Ableton Live and multiple controllers to trigger up to 16 individual channels of audio at any one time during the performance, and also performs live keyboard overdubs. The end result is a hugely addictive, compulsive and compelling blend of music that's often new, often familiar but always utterly unique.

Elite Force - Breakbeat Breakfast Reconstructed - Jan 2024

I always held the Freestylers in high regard so i thought i would put together a studio mix celebrating their music over such a long career. Lots of slapping breakbeats, high tempo in the first hour and a bit lower in the last 20 mins. As the title suggests I've Cut & Paste a lot of the tracks using Ableton to make edits and mixes on the fly while each track is mixed in key.

To me the Plump DJs were at the forefront in the early Nuskool Breaks scene back in the 2000's, leading the way with new  innovative tunes and tight DJs mixes of some very underground music at that time. Lee Rous and Andy Gardner make up the duo that is the Plump DJs with over 20 years experience in the game and while the breaks musical style has changed over the years they are still touring and producing great music till this day.

This mix was made for Annie Nightingale and her BBC Radio 1 show called Annie On One back in 2005.

Plump DJs - Annie On One - 17.6.2005

With over 2 decades experience as a DJ and Producer Deekline has cemented himself in Breakbeat folklore with a huge back catalogue of music and mixes that can be heard and seen all over the interwebs. With early collaborations with his sidekick and friend Wizard releasing a full album called "Breaks, Beats and Blondes" on Botchit & Scarper Records in 2004. Another one in 2009 and 2 mix compilations.

Nowadays with tracks such as Got to Believe, Deepa and jungle anthem Good to Have the Feelin, with the legendary Tippa Irie, have picked up play and support from DJs such as MistaJam and Annie Mac, on Radio 1 and 1Xtra. Deekline is still doing the EDM business to this day, touring and making music.

Both Ellis D & Rennie Pilgrem have been in the EDM scene since the beginning of time (haha) and both were a part of an act called Rhythm Section along with Richie T & Nick Newton. Rhythm Section were an electronic rave act before Ellis D & Rennie Pilgrem moved onto their own careers as an artist. This mix from 2010 was recorded LIVE at Rough Tempo Radio a place at that time that had guest mixes from top breakbeat acts. The mix itself starts out with some old school breaks sounds as Rhythm Section then moves on to individual mixes from Rennie Pilgrem & Ellis D.

Charting the top of Juno Download Morlack is one funky artist and he has put together this special DJ mix just for Old Breaks Mixes, not an old breaks mix as such but a great mix of old tunes. Finger Lickin Records were the home to many great Breakbeat artists and DJs. Started back in 1998 by Justin Rushmoore and Jem Panufnik (known collectively as Soul of Man) they were at the forefront innovating the breaks scene with new music and artists, selling a pile of vinyl records throughout the year 2000 and onwards.

Soul of Man - Essential Mix - 22.7.2007

The Breakbeat Junkie rose to fame in the early days of the Nu Funk Breakbeat mid tempo scene with a tonne of Funky Breaks tracks mostly released through the Goodgroove label. His tracks and remixes have graced other labels too such as Breakbeat Paradise Recordings and he secretly known to be part of the duo Second Hand Audio. This mix was a promo for Goodgroove Records for the year 2008.
