A kaleidoscopic sonic riot, Belgium-Japanese duo Aili's debut album Nandakke? has proven to be one of 2024's breakout hits, its joyful collision of electro-pop, electronica, house music and so much more grabbing the attention of everyone from the Belgian national press to the likes of KCRW in the United States. Now, whilst the band get ready for a busy summer touring the album, Eskimo present the first club ready remixes, re-edits and reworks.
  
No stranger to Eskimo Recordings, Danish producer Kasper Bjørke returns to take the razor to previous Aili single Fashion and deliver a dreamy cosmic remix. Teasing the track apart, Bjørke applies a soft gossamer gauze to Fashion's already languid bass line and gives the song's laidback disco rhythm even more room to breathe, allowing Aili's vocals to float up into the night sky and allow the track to take its place amongst the stars.

Biography

Aili are Belgium-Japanese electro-pop duo Aili Maruyama and Orson Wouters. After a chance meeting at a party in 2019, and time spent bonding over music and synths, they found they had an instant connection, their different personalities and approaches to making music inspiring each other to explore new ideas and sounds.  Starting every studio session with no preset ideas, Aili and Orson instead embraced a more spontaneous and playful way of writing songs. Bouncing sounds, samples and even jokes off each other, they let the music develop in unexpected ways until Aili would feel the words begin to appear. To her own surprise this also led Aili to sing more and more in Japanese, or rather the unique version of Japanese she developed with her father so they could stay connected after she left Japan, aged just seven.  The first result of their partnership was 2021's Dansu EP on Eskimo Recordings, the label Orson had previously worked with under the name Transistorcake. Dansu's mix of underground electronic sounds and sparkling pop was an instant hit, its title track spending 8 consecutive weeks at the top of Radio 1's VOX list and saw the band nominated for that year's Studio Brussel's De Nieuwe Lichting (New Generation) award.  Since that debut the band have cemented their position as one of Belgium's most exciting new bands with new singles praised by the likes of Rolling Stone, a wonderfully strange video that saw the band draped in food, and becoming a regular feature on tastemaker radio stations like KEXP and KCRW in the US and Radio Nova in France. Having found a way to transfer the energy they generate in the studio to the live stage the band have also gone on to perform ecstatic live shows throughout Europe and even appeared as themselves playing live on the hit Belgian TV drama Roomies.  In 2022 the band were invited to Japan where, in between Orson adding to his synth collection and Aili reconnecting with the country of her birth, they played the Inspire Tokyo Festival. Championed by Tokyo's J-Wave radio station the band went on to play their own sold-out solo show in the capital where a strong following was already waiting for them and partnered with Nariaki Obukuro and Yaffle's creative company TOKA to release a special Japanese edition of the Dansu EP.  Returning to Belgium with new ideas, new samples and, yes, new synths Aili have spent the next 6 months working on their hotly anticipated debut album, Nandakke? Set for release in early 2024 on Eskimo Recordings, Nandakke? more than fulfils the band's early promise. Covering everything from the idiosyncratic Japanese relationship to fashion to Aili's father's takoyaki recipe, its ten tracks veer from surreal electro-pop to joyful electronica, house music and beyond and is as a record as unique as Aili themselves.

Northern Mexico emerges as an enigmatic territory, where the unexplored mixes with the violent, revealing hidden gems in its vast expanse. In this setting of contrasts, Ciudad Juárez is the birthplace of idols such as Juan Gabriel, Cassandro El Exótico and now one of its promises; Marito Ramírez, a young pop singer whose short career has given him something to talk about. 'Ya no te kiero +' marked Marito's debut, a single that fuses influences from the post-punk sound with forceful bass riffs and monotonous rhythms, wrapped in an atmosphere of distorted synthesizers. His vocal style, which oscillates between melodic and humorous, adds a distinctive electroclash touch. This unique combination immediately attracts the attention of Nativo's creative team, who proposed a remix by Roliva who stripped the song down to its essence, creating a disco-punk version that preserves the original essence but masterfully adapts to the context. It is a pleasure to welcome back Darkroom Dubs favourite Undo (aka Gabriel Berlanga) with Naranja Limon - a vibrant 2-track EP packed tight with luscious synths, rich tones, and evocative melodies. With an impressive back catalogue of original productions, open-minded live and DJ sets, and his imprint, Factory City, Gabriel is an established contributor to Catalonia's ever-evolving underground electronic music scene and beyond. 

The feel-good title track, Naranja Limon, has a Balearic optimism throughout its five minutes of blissful energy. A laidback, joyous bassline engulfs you in a warm ray of sunshine, whilst light and airy synths float and flutter away like leaves in a gentle breeze, giving the feeling of having stumbled into a paradisical setting, far away from the constraints and worries of everyday reality. The track perfectly encapsulates the uplifting feeling of a sun-soaked dancefloor filled with smiling faces no matter where you turn, the perfect soundtrack for a carefree summer afternoon Terrace session. 

The second track, Liquid, flows in a more emotionally charged, melancholic direction, sculpted by an array of complex sonic elements which meld together to form a rich electronic soundscape. A powerful arpeggiator with a warm, gritty character leads the charge and provides the dynamic, raw energy. A stuttering, jittery pad fills the peripheral space, immersing you in euphoric atmospherics. The break then reveals a contrastingly delicate, lush, ethereal melody which emerges from the dense harmonics,  inviting you to close your eyes and be swept away, guiding you deep into the depths on a revitalising mission.

First released back in 2013, You Man's debut EP Restless -and its lead track Birdcage- launched the career of French duo Tepat Huleux and Giac Di Falco, kickstarting a decade of stunning live shows played all around the globe and acclaimed releases and remixes on labels such as as Tronik Youth’s NEIN, Boston Bun’s Circa’99 and Eskimo Recordings. Now, to celebrate their first ten years in the game Huleux and Di Falco have revisited their debut EP, and this time they've brought along some of the many friends they've made over the past decade, from house legend Etienne de Crécy to pianist Des Jonquilles.

Taking things even further out there Parisian trio PPJ send Birdcage on a trip to Brazil's carnivals, vocalist Páula adding her own lyrics to the remix's freshly added and frenetic South American electro rhythms. Leaving thoughts of sunshine and the beach behind, sometime NEIN label-mates and fellow French duo Kimshies take Birdcage in a much darker direction, sparse electro beats and atmospheric washes of synths combine to create a shiver inducing John Carpenter-esque atmosphere.

Berlin based trio Dina Summer, the new wave/electronic project of duo Local Suicide and Kalipo, returns this summer with their new single ‘Alien’; a tightly spun 80s influenced dance track with otherworldly vibes. The single follows on from their acclaimed 2022 album ‘Rimini’ (Audiolith Records) - a nostalgic journey through retro disco sounds -  2021 EP ‘Who Am I’ and 2024 EP Hide & Seek (Iptamenos Discos), as well as a participation in Curses’ Next Wave Acid Punx Compilation on Eskimo.

With online streams into the millions and airplay across German radio (including a Hot Rotation on Berlin's Radio Eins), Dina Summer’s music has been featured on Spotify and Apple Music editorial playlists and been spun live by DJs such as Charlotte De Witte, The Hacker, Curses, Joris Voorn, Joyce Muniz & Dubfire. The track, which draws inspiration from electronic music pioneers such as Kraftwerk, captures a range of retro-futuristic sounds - indicative of the way in which this artist moves flexibly between past and future. Exploring the idea of “other” through an extraterrestrial narrative, the song is a tribute to outsiders and “freaks” and serves as a metaphor for acceptance, openness and communication.
