Kaitiaki o te Whenua - Guardians of the Earth, is a reflection of my deep connection to the land, the ocean, and the old stories of my people flowing through them. It’s a Māori folk ballad, gentle and soulful, a melodic form of lament that speaks to joy and longing. The melody moves like the tides, ebbing and flowing, carried by the whispers of the wind and the pulse of the earth.

At its core, the song is about being a kaitiaki, a guardian of the earth (whenua) and the ocean (moana). The soft reggae percussion underlines this connection, like the heartbeat of nature, steady and grounding. It reminds me that, just like the ocean’s rhythm, our responsibility to protect the natural world never ceases.

Through every note, I hope to convey the stories of my ancestors, the strength of my cultural heritage, and the beauty of the wild places I love. This song is my call for all of us to listen to the earth, honor its rhythms, and take up the role of its guardians.

Reminiscences

OMGG – short for Oceana, Mira, Gaia, and Gigi – is an electrifying all-girl rock band with a cosmic edge, blending futuristic sounds and deep rhythms inspired by the mysteries of the universe. Formed in high school, the four girls first connected in their music class, drawn together by their love of rock, sci-fi, and a fascination with the unknown. The energy between them was magnetic from the start, and they quickly turned their shared passion into a sound all their own.

Oceana is the band’s ethereal lead vocalist, with a voice that seems to transcend worlds. Often described as “otherworldly,” she brings a dreamy, hypnotic tone to each track. Mira, the guitarist, is fearless and experimental, always pushing the group’s sound to new frontiers with her cosmic riffs. Gaia grounds the group with her bass, delivering steady, powerful lines and a quiet intensity that adds depth to their sound. And then there’s Gigi, the band’s heartbeat, whose drumming is as bold as her personality. Known for her dynamic style and fierce presence on stage, she keeps the energy high and the rhythm alive.

Together, OMGG creates a unique fusion of rock, punk, and sci-fi-inspired sounds, bringing audiences into their orbit with every performance. Their music is bold, rebellious, and full of heart, inviting listeners to explore the boundaries of reality and dream beyond.
