This takes place on land stolen from the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung People of the Kulin Nation. MIE acknowledges the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung People as the rightful owners of the land we live on, and pays respect to their elders, past, present, and emerging. Sovereignty has never been ceded.

This fortnight, we celebrate and dip into a small selection of Indigenous Australian women to release music in the 20th century. Unfortunately, the digitised collection in this field is still very sparse. While the 1970s saw a rise in the number of recordings made by Indigenous artists, this was a field still overwhelmingly dominated by male musicians. It was only after 1990 that a modest yet promising increase was seen in the number of Indigenous Australian women releasing music, augmented by the pioneering 1992 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contemporary women’s festival, With Open Eyes. This was one of the first steps towards creating a platform for Indigenous Australian women to ‘combine forces on a national level and let their forces be heard’ (‘The sung world of Aboriginal and Islander women’, Ellis & Ellis 1994), and was a hugely exciting milestone for the women of Indigenous Australia. 

While the quantity of recordings during this period are slim, they are absolute treasures. We hope you enjoy this slice of music and stay tuned for next fortnight, where we will turn our focus to women of Indigenous Australia in the 21st century.
