The next single from New Regency Orchestra’s self-titled forthcoming album comes in form of Manuel Sánchez Acosta’s salsa sensation, ‘Papa Boco’. Originally written by the Dominican physician and composer, the band took inspiration from a different 1962 arrangement, made by bandleader and timbales maestro, Orlando Marin. 

For this fresh reimagining of ‘Papa Boco’, the 18-piece big band of New Regency Orchestra keeps the essence of Marin’s arrangement whilst adding their explosive flair to proceedings. An Afro-Cuban-flavoured warmth washes over you from the off, with Latin percussion and a swell of peaking horns kicking the song into gear immediately. Stepping forth, Jose Cesar’s commanding vocals give a distinctive depth to the recording that sets it apart from Marin’s version. 

With bandleader Eliane Correa on the keys and at the helm, the salsa energy is amplified through her scintillating and syncopated chords. As the track peaks, the groove swaps from 4’s to 3’s for the breakdown slipping into sensuous territory before bursting back into the dynamism of the full orchestra’s power.

A respectful yet contemporary take on a salsa gem from one of London’s most electrifying new acts.

Frankie Francis of deep-digging tropical DJ duo Sofrito offers up a custom dancefloor-ready edit of a highlight from our latest collection, documenting the heyday of sega music in Mauritius between 1973 and 1979. The album is compiled by La Reunion-based DJs La Basse Tropicale with extensive sleeve notes by Mauritian cultural authority, Percy Yip Tong.

Claudio Veeraragoo is one of the biggest stars of séga music of the 60s and 70s. His stroke of genius was to marry séga rhythms with qawwali and Bollywood styles. He scored his debut hit, ‘Nou Manz Nou Larak’, in 1966, playing the accordion, and broke through as a major star with his cassette release, ‘Bhaï Aboo’ which exploded across the island upon its release. His songs were subsequently covered by French star Maxime Leforestier and Bollywood singer Shaan. Claudio has since brought séga to the four corners of the globe and, of all of the ‘70s artists, has remained one of Mauritius’ biggest live draws. Today, his son Michael, a drummer and producer, manages his father’s activities via their own production house, Kabana Music.

The original version of #6 is a dub-strafed subway ride through abandoned tunnels, a haunted Philip K. Dick alternate past where Joy Division cut live techno tunes with Scientist. On the flip, Chris Carter adds heavy machine funk and saturated bomb damage FX, re-arranging the component parts into a dancefloor jammer from the death factory.

Late last year "Music For Dreams" released the digital album "Debut" by Bongo Entp. This passion project from veteran studio session player Jacob Andersen brought us an unexpectedly fresh take on South American music traditions. 
On this new vinyl release, the project is both revisited and expanded upon. Cherry picking some of the grooviest cuts from the album for this EP, we also get remix treatments from well sourced collaborators Selvagem & Carrot Green. Both hailing from Brazil, these producers certainly know how to work Latin percussion on a dancefloor. 
Taking on the dreamy cover version of Henri Mancini's classic "Lujón" (original included too), Carrot Green ups the tempo and wrangles the elements of the original into something completely different. Adding a house kick and dark acid undertones, he takes you on a wet trip with lots of twists and turns. 
The production duo of Selvagem manage something similar with one of the looser Bongo Entp. jams. The original "Foto Feita Do Aviaõ"  is a jazzy scat sinaalong tune. In Selvagem's hands, it turns  into an epic cosmic disco groover, locked into place by a muscular baseline. The vocal chants of the original are here, but used in a lower key and more sparingly to punctuate the bounce of the rhythm. 
The vinyl includes two other album highlights - the Cafe del Mar classic "El Rey De Pollo" , a Santana-style chill-out affair featuring Mikkel Nordsø of Bombay Hotel fame and finally the moody "Spanish Winter" with its robotic reggae-like groove and syrup-thick synthesizers bubbling in a bittersweet fashion. A superb package.

Yo Me Llamo Cumbia - Episodio 05 (Homenaje a Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto)

The Gene Dudley Group represents an outpouring of deep soul and funk music from obscenely talented 27 year-old multi-instrumentalist, Gene Dudley.  

The debut album, “Saturday Shifting”, was recorded in a cupboard in Muswell Hill, North London, and features the man himself on trumpet, saxophone, drums, bass, guitar and piano. On a couple of occasions, though, Gene had to budge over to allow fellow musicians Ewan Whyte and Tom Jackson to fit in a play a solo or two, but other than that, everything you hear on this album comes from the mind, mouth, fingers and heart of Mr. Gene Dudley Esq.

Fans of labels like Truth & Soul and Daptone will relish these sonorous soulful offerings, but the influences on this album are wide ranging. Tracks like “When The Gorilla Get Grip’ and “The New Lots Of Cooperstown” conjure up 60’s spy soundtracks, but elsewhere there are afro-beat influences on “The Hilo Bay Halfway” and more easy, introspective moments on “Minnie” and “Do The Stanley Weinberger”.  Just when you think you’ve got Gene Dudley’s sound pinned down, the album culminates with a real game changer in the shaped of the brilliantly titled “Waxing Unwaxed Lemons”, a quirky, electronic tinged nugget that should please many a dance floor.

In the live arena, rather than trying to play all the instruments himself, Gene deploys a quartet of top notch young musicians to help him out (whilst Gene mixes it up between bass and keys throughout the set) as witnessed at the recent Hot 8 Brass Band gig in London, The Gene Dudley Group’s debut live show.

Since that first outing, the group have played to much acclaim at venues such as London’s XOYO, and will be celebrating the release of “Saturday Shifting” with a live album launch, in support of label mate Henri-Pierre Noel, at The Jazz Café on July 13th. A night, and an album, not to be missed.
