Bay 6 Recordings' sister label Calibrate Records continue to impress with their high-octane mix of 'rolling beats, breaks and bass', drawing for that at maximum capacity here. We've witnessed the likes of Madusea, label boss Echo Motion, Rozfresh and more crop up on the imprint, who are pushing forward and going from strength to strength with each passing release. Now, they've locked the exciting, Chicago-based beatsmith Johnathan Thomas for a cracking 2-tracker, further embedding their commitment to driving a different sound than the sonics you can find over on Bay 6. Unchained Mix Series 028 by Was A Be (Italy)

Launching onto the scene in 2015 with his Jah EP on Subtitles, Friction’s Shogun Audio was quick to snag a ride for a number of exclusive releases in the years that followed. Since then his music has attracted substantial attention. Not just due to his creative talent, but because each track he dreams up is a unique un-referenced body of work, often spanning a wide variety of influences and consistently pushing the perimeter of Bass. 

The Shaker EP on Unchained is both a ‘banging’ and sophisticated melting pot of Footwork, Rave and Drum’n’Bass. When asked what he felt about the project, he explained he was incredibly happy to be returning to his original sound. 

Whilst the title track is the EP’s warehouse four-to-the-floor Molotov, it is yet punctured with enough syncopated rhythms, vocal funk and menacing sonics for it to be a proper piece of mutant art. “Weasel”, like The Shaker, adheres to the school of explosive, but heads into tasteful tribal territory. “The Walk” then veers off script with luscious jazz, melody and intelligent meanderings of fragmented juke. 

Whilst all three tracks stand as a cohesive whole on their own, to spice the dish, China’s Radiax offers up another of his energising rollers with his remix of The Walk.

Diffrent Music preps two juxtaposing cuts from label stalwart Fearful in ‘FKD’ / ‘XINF’.

Summing up 2020 in name and sound — though actually produced prior to the current crisis — ’FKD’ brings darkness and danger via urgent beat shifts and shadowy tech contortions. A bouncy step keeps things moving, but this one is all about that distorted b-line tearing through the mix.

‘XINF’ couldn’t be more of a contrast. Playful percussive rolls fill an otherwise sparse beat, while huge swells of low-end and fizzing synth tones combine into an epic, uplifting cerebral crescendo. A classical masterpiece rewired for a hopeful future.

Both tracks hint at old school Diffrent vibes, but applied from a fresh perspective not heard before on the label. Fearful’s ‘FKD’ / ‘XINF’ is out Friday 27th November on digital and limited edition 10” vinyl.
