Layton Giordani takes the next step in the evolution of his sound with ‘Hyper World’.

Despite the challenging year we all shared in 2020, Giordani continued to grow in leaps and bounds as a producer. His second studio album ‘New Generation’ was a critical success and showcased the breadth of his artistry over 11 tracks, with moods fit for both the dancefloor and afterhours alike.

His latest offering, however, flexes its raving muscle and ambles up for the summer. The title track is bad arse, with swirling pads, trippy arpeggios and subtle flourishes of acid and psychedelica that all combine for a stomping finish. Fresh in every sense. ‘Astro’ is heavy on drama, driven by a big synth lead that pierces the air with intensity, before a delicious mid-track key change pushes the energy up to eleven and shortly after drops down into a celestial break, before building back up again.

The latest release from Nikko.Z's Dopamine Music welcomes Nicolas Ruiz back to the label for a brand new single. The Argentinean artist last appeared on the Greek imprint in September of 2015 with ‘Calliope'. Subsequent appearances on Classound Recordings and Superordinate Music have maintained Nicolas' position as one of the most in demand artists in progressive house. A sparse release schedule has only made the appeal for new material stronger and now he returns with ‘Vision' alongside remixes from Matias Chilano, Paul Deep and Lucas Rossi.
The original mix finds Nicolas crafting a timeless, cross genre production that's nicely dialed for the dance floor. Beginning with punchy kicks and a growling synth, the track has an immediate presence, before dulcet chord stabs and vibrant percussion brighten up the framework. As it ebbs and flows through short breaks and clever transitions the musical narrative continues to shift, gently pulling at your emotions before a groovy finale.
The first interpretation of 'Vision' is provided by Matias Chilano who is making his third appearance on the label. The Argentinean artist made his Dopamine debut in 2015 with a remix of 'New Intention' by Alberto Blanco and Marcelo Paladini. 2016 found Matias back on the Greek imprint with a remix of 'Solis' by Robert R. Hardy. Also owning releases on Juicebox Music, Movement Recordings and Sound Avenue, Matias now makes his way back to Dopamine with a stellar remix of 'Vision'. Opting for a trippier, more atmospheric approach this sits as a wonderful complement to the original. Cascading motifs, clustered effects and detailed percussion wrap around the tight rhythmic core before a well crafted break takes you further into dreamland. 
Next up is Paul Deep who is making his Dopamine Music debut following releases on Clubsonica Records and PHW Elements. Coming straight from the heart of Argentina the Hernan Cattaneo favourite puts a pure progressive spin on 'Vision'. Backed by a rolling groove it's seamless flow is filled with subtle shades and tones. As the second act commences the atmospheric narrative rises with haunting wails and swirling noise, ultimately leading to a heavenly finale. 
Another Argentinean artist who has been making major strides in the progressive underground is Lucas Rossi. Following releases on Balkan Connection and Nick Warren's The Soundgarden Lucas makes his Dopamine Music debut with an amazing interpretation of 'Vision'. On a backbone of rippling bass comes waves of percussion and rhythmic pulses. Undeniably organic, it's effortless flow is infectious as haunting voices and shimmering melodies encase the framework. The main break presents the biggest moment on the release with flurries of drums and electronics building with each passing loop, before eventually dropping out as the groove thunders for a spectacular finish. Perhaps the finest remix of Lucas' career and the perfect way to round out an excellent release on Nikko.Z's Dopamine Music. Don't miss it.

Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? Besides being the name of a famous Gauguin painting, these are questions that have most probably been valid for any given time period. In ancient Greece, Socrates believed that the purpose of the human mind is to explore the nature of virtue in order to perfect the soul and build a life based on ethical knowledge. Epicurus thought, meanwhile, that the goal of living is to receive pleasure, not sensory though, but through getting rid of physical pain, emotional restlessness, suffering and fear of death. Medieval Europe and India, despite cultural differences, had the same understanding of the meaning of life – worship of ancestors, adherence to common religious and mythical ideals, and the importance of ascribed status. Schopenhauer defined a person’s life as the product of a metaphysical will: people think they act on their own, but are in reality driven by someone else’s will. Danish philosopher Kierkegaard argued that life is full of absurdity and that humans must create their own values in an indifferent world. Pragmatic philosophers believe that instead of searching for the truth about life, people should seek a useful understanding of life. And so on and so forth. Natural disasters, epidemics, wars, the rich and the poor will come and go, but questions about the meaning of life and those who seek answers for them have always been and will forever be there. The text turned out this way perhaps because when listening to @oh_why’s music, you want to either ask yourself Gauguin’s questions or be the one who finds the answers.

Francesca is back with a new episode of her art-inspired show Architextures. This time the show is based on the Land Art movement that began in the 60’s.

The Land Art movement sought a direct engagement with nature, creating artworks in and with the landscape. It emerged as part of a wider interest in ecology and the preservation of the environment in an increasingly industrialised and polluted urban society. Works are usually situated in nature and made from natural mediums, often juxtaposed with man-made materials, such as concrete, metal and asphalt. Artists such as Robert Smithson have cited huge, ambitiously scaled sculptures in remote or hard to reach places, while others have made highly ephemeral work, which exists primarily through photographs, diagrams or written texts.

We are stoked to share the first episode of DEXT Sessions, a new monthly show by DEXT Recordings boss James Haze starting. 
Join him & guests as they delve deep into sub-heavy frequencies & broken rhythms of the UK underground and beyond. Expect techno, jungle, UKG, off-kilter house, electro and some surprises along the way on their monthly sessions here on Openlab.
In this first episode Haze is joined by Appleblim. 
Initially known for producing and spinning some of the darkest, heaviest music to come out of the early U.K. dubstep scene, Appleblim (Laurie Osborne) has continued to produce innovative, bass-heavy club music, blending elements of techno, ambient, garage, jungle, and other styles. Along with Shackleton, he ran the highly influential Skull Disco label from 2005 until 2008, when he founded his own Apple Pips imprint. He has regularly collaborated with Ramadanman, Peverelist, Second Storey, and other producers, and has remixed Harmonia & Eno, Bonobo, and even Claude Debussy. In addition to regular appearances at trendsetting dubstep night FWD>>, Appleblim has performed at prestigious clubs and event series such as Berghain, Fabric , and The Bunker.
