TYREL WILLIAMS (Immortal Sin, Secret Studio / SF)

Tyrel (@tyrelwilliams) was a mainstay of Chicago’s underground scene for years. He began mixing records in 1999. Soon later he landed a job at Gramaphone Records, where he spent many years building his collection of vinyl. He spent 2007-2011 building his Acid Test residency at Smart Bar, which was an all vinyl dance party in Chicago. In 2009 he took a job working with Jeff Mills and helping with Axis Records. Tyrel moved to San Francisco in 2011 where he is now a resident DJ for Housepitality, Acid Test, and Fleurs Du Mal. In 2014 he started a project with Bryan Bai-ee called Secret Studio with releases on their own label, Secret Studio Records. His next venture is his new vinyl label with C.L.A.W.S. called Immortal Sin, with the two releases featuring I.B.M. on the first record and Bill Converse on the second.

This mix was recorded for Housepitalty back in May 2020. Tyrel was feeling his old deep house collection, so he wanted to tap into that and play some of his favorite deep house records.

One of Rome’s finest electronic exponents and Final Frontier, Nature, Pigna mastermind mixes up a storm of house, electro, techno all infused with his trademark bounce and funk. After his latest solo adventures on Jackmaster’s related Numbers label and Fort Romeau’s Cin Cin, his restless journey continues with an album that came out in early 2019 on the highly revered Vladimir Ivkovic’s Offen Music: Marco’s first solo album in more than 10 years called “WOW”! Last but not least, he just started a brand new label called Unrelatable, reviving that Finalfrontier spirit of the early days of his musical life.

Oakland-based Tape Ghost, aka David Grunzweig, is an architect of emotional spaces. As both an ambient and techno producer, Tape Ghost’s identity is grounded in a complementary duality. Inspired by Detroit masters like Carl Craig, Robert Hood and Plastikman, Tape Ghost was born as a minimal-leaning techno project in 2015 with a focus on live performance. Adept at curating both live sets and DJ sets, his presence has been felt in the Bay-Area, where he’s thrown parties through the collective Asterisk and supported artists like Call Super, Dr. Rubinstein, Dax J, Mike Gervais, dBridge, and m50.
In 2016, Grunzweig adopted a second project, becoming one half of Night Sea: a dub-tinged, ambient techno outfit. What bridges Grunzweig’s two projects is his purposeful approach to music, which, in his own words, aims to “open a channel for direct emotional connection.” Like a sun fading on the edge of the horizon, his productions are imbued with nuance, stillness and depth, captivating those who listen. Through intentional production and a growing body of work, Tape Ghost has emerged as a vital presence in the burgeoning landscape of electronic music.
