Micron Audio embodies a hub for a modern and futuristic electro sound, led by its master DJ Stingray 313. The imprint beckons intense electronic sounds, roughened textures and geometries that speak to a guiding principle of making technological advancement accessible to the people. These technoid adventures of sci-fi sound design and arrays of un-abating rhythm, draw its listeners through warped microworlds and wicked contortions. Behind the sounds, it exists as a display of artistic responsibility, making statements and providing solutions from socio-political commentaries.

The first Micron Audio physical release emerged in 2011, with DJ Stingray 313’s Electronic Countermeasures EP, following a digital-only compilation that is no longer available. Tracks from the Micron Audio hemisphere have featured in several compilation records released by the likes of Rush Hour and Creme Organization, including Stringray’s Urban Tribe project. It represents a crisply defiant and firmly electronic approach, drawing in the infective indicators of video games. Relaunching afresh in 2021, Micron Audio is working with new artists and is step- ping not only further into the future but into the foreground, where its clear scientific intention and political attitude is entrenched through top-shelf sound design and pumping rhythms.

Magma, a manic rollercoaster, opens the A side and is accompanied by Purity of Spirit, an uplifting basement Rave anthem. On the flip things get a bit more twisted with Groove Ryder, a melange of funky Breakz and Trance with a fat hit of Organic Groove. The Acid Fiend Mix of Rave Patrol completes this record with an over the top composition of drums and JCow’s wild Guitar play.

Within just one year, the Leipzig-based label Self Learning System has established itself as a serious and cheeky contender in the electro scene, and the third release aims to live up to this claim once again. DJ Unisex surprises with Chromatic Stimulations, as his four otherworldly tracks unfold a no-frills attitude on par with a trippy sound design between a revealing in and outro. This EP is not afraid to present raw and unsettling machine noises and rather revels in the bubble bath of reverberating and resonating synths from late night hardware sessions.

PREMIERE • DJ Unisex - Electro Techno Freaks! [Self Learning System]

North London producer @rumu returns to Scuffed Recordings with his Wightman Wibble EP, embracing a glut of influences from the city’s club heritage.

Since appearing on the label’s Scuffed Presents compilation series in 2021 with his track Splinter, rumu has begun to foster an in-the-know following with releases on Dusky’s 17Steps and Running Back, with tracks supported by Ben UFO, Logic1000, Cinthie and Raji Rags.

The Wightman Wibble EP delves into rumu’s musical upbringing and heritage and explores a world of contrasts - with stillness building to explosive energy and floating euphoria giving way to murky grooves.

The EP opens with Critical Wass, which rumu conceptualises as having ‘pockets of mass bursting into each other, descending into nothing, then forming again’. Up next is the title track, the most high-energy of the release, which takes influence from classic rave, house, and breaks.

Finishing up the EP is ‘Ravanne’, which sees rumu take influence from his Mauritian heritage, with instrumentation and samples sourced from the island of Mauritius. The Ravanne is a rhythmic percussive instrument used in Sega music, which rumu samples throughout the track and channels through his love of UK bass genres.

rumu - Wightman Wibble EP (Previews)

Berlin-based artist Werner Soyeaux under his stage name Bläck Dävil is a core part of the Berlin collective Ick Mach Welle. Schnäll Schnäll is his debut solo artist EP on Killekill, with own productions accompanied by collaborations with Bettina and DJ Normal 4, alongside remixes by Rhyw and Gesloten Cirkel. The EP opens with the dark intro Alptraum, which Gesloten Cirkel transforms into an ill-tempered acid-electro monster. The title track Schnäll Schnäll provides a stark contrast to these, with bright overtones existing alongside deeply rooted sonic bedrock. Rhyw adds a level of abstraction and futurism with his remix of this track, whilst retaining the dub-influenced vibe of the original. Following on from this Geldschere is collaboration with Düsseldorf artist DJ Normal 4, with Bläck Dävil contributing his own lyrics and voice, to create a track that could be fittingly described as “Acid Punk Rock”! The final track on the release is a cheeky ode to the Ick Mach Welle family. Here the Dävil's passion for Hardtekk, Gabber and similar rough styles of music become clear.
