"A respected name within the progressive house fraternity, Forerunners makes a welcome return to Meanwhile with his first full release in the shape of the “Ancient Methods” EP.
 
Operating out of his Arizona home, Brenden LaBonte has consistently found himself at the forefront of a distinctive underground house sound with his Forerunners soubriquet. An advocate of the ‘quality over quantity’ maxim and a sound that is full of maturity and quality, the US artist has seen his music allied to a plethora of high-profile imprints that include Anjunadeep, Silk Music, and Black Hole Recordings.
 
Now returning to GMJ & Matter’s flagship imprint after a spell-binding interpretation of Mike Isai’s “Home” in July 2021, Meanwhile’s 21st release sees Forerunners open his “Ancient Methods” EP with the mesmerising title track. Full of melodic poise and rhythmic interplay, a driving beat and tight off-beat percussion heralds a dynamic opening before a mechanic bassline and syncopated groove create the foundation for delicate motifs to lilt their way across the 8-minute track with ease. Delay-infused effects and pitched synth add to the aural atmosphere at the breakdown as a sustained pad holds sway throughout to create a subtle tension and hypnotic vibe.
 
The complex rhythmic foundation that infuses the oxymoronic “Light in the Darkness” is a powerful forerunner for the deep melodic melange to follow. As running bassline and swirling effects build, a dizzying breakdown of looped arpeggio provides sonic intrigue and bright, uplifting zenith. Exploding into the third movement, an hypnotic melody sits against oppressive bass and rhythm to create a magical track.
 
Continuing the dark rhythmic narrative of its predecessors, “Valis” provides another sonic tapestry filled with texture and innovation. Beneath a ticking percussive groove and chest-thumping kick, an effects-laden and pitched oscillator bassline reveal themselves across the 6-minute offering as a mesmerising arp creates a powerful melodic presence in the mid-range. Science-fiction inspired effects that the Future Sound of London would be proud of, infuse the breakdown as the second half drops into the huge bass-heavy underpinning once more.
 
Redolent in modern and innovative production technique and a cutting-edge sound, Forerunners brings a scintillating new approach to “Ancient Methods”."

Having begun 2016 with his Lowland-collab ‘Glowing Skies’, Orkidea ties off his production year with the single release of the brilliant and genuinely affecting ‘Strange World’. The final track to be lifted from last summer’s ‘Harmonia’ album, the release features the singularly memorable tones of vocalist (and fellow Fin) Sami Uotila. 

With Orkidea himself elevating ‘Strange World’ to club-mix length, the release also features a cool, stylish refashioning from the Helsinki-based pairing of Tom & Hills.
While its opening bass notes may have some real groove behind them, make no mistakes about Orkidea’s full intentions here! His single release expansion of ‘Strange World’ is designed & plotted for a peak-time, mass effect reaction. Sami Uotila’s vocals channel early Dave Gahan, while his incisive, perceptive lyrics will touch a chord with many. With a blade-sharp leadline, Tapio charges the break, before his equally deadly top-of-the-drop key change triggers its white lightning moment.   

With peak-hour business taken care of, Petri Mäkitalo & Ramon Soivio (better known as duo Tom & Hills) home in on a cooler variant of ‘Strange World’. Houser in tempo and atmospherically proggier in top-tone, think ‘Discopolis’ for 2016 and you’re well on the right track.

An unreleased remix I did with Slusnik Luna's Nicke for Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto label back in 1999. Oakey and the label liked the mix but because it featured only a fraction of the vocal it didn't in their opinion promote Jan's vocal talents well enough. Can really argue with that;) As far as I know Brian Transeau (aka BT) was somehow involved in producing the original. This was also featured in my early live PAs at Labyrinth vs Gatecrasher in Helsinki.

Every visionary artist has a defining work - their personal magnus opus. For the polymath Andrew Bayer, ‘In My Last Life’ might be just that. 

Grammy nominated through his production work with Above & Beyond, the D.C. native co-produced their #3 US album ‘Common Ground’ and is also a writer and producer on Lo Moon’s indie electronica hit ‘Loveless’. 

As a DJ, the Anjunabeats star has graced the stages of tastemaker electronic festivals such as EDC Vegas, Electric Zoo and Creamfields, and headlined clubs from LA to London.

But it is as an album artist that Andrew Bayer has sculpted his reputation as a true innovator - an artist in the classic sense of the word. 

It’s a journey that began with his 2011 debut LP ‘It’s Artificial’ - described by Mixmag as “an incredible album of sophisticated electronica”. Traversing glitch hop, progressive house and electronica, it signalled the arrival of a true talent on Anjunabeats. 

Its 2013 follow-up, ‘If It Were You, We’d Never Leave’ took an even bolder creative direction. Ditching the 4/4 beats completely, Andrew instead conjured a 16-track sampladelic odyssey featuring Sufjan Stevens, Ane Brun and Des-ree - earning comparisons to DJ Shadow, Moby and Flying Lotus by XLR8R.

Five years in the making, this third LP ‘In My Last Life’ represents a humanising of the enigmatic producer’s sound - comprised of 8 heartfelt and emotional songs penned and delivered by Norwegian singer/songwriter Ane Brun and the incredible Alison May respectively. It is also, quite simply, his defining work to date. 

An artistic statement and a perfectly considered body of work, ‘In My Last Life’ owes very little to the dancefloor that Andrew is often associated with - instead drawing its inspirations from influences as far and wide as Kate Bush, Atoms For Peace, Aphex Twin and Talk Talk.

Through its 8 songs, the LP plots an enchanting, carefully spun tale of love and loss - explored through the narrative prisms of reincarnation and immortality.

Alison May swims in the overwhelming sensations of love in the ethereal electronic washes of ‘Tidal Wave’, looks at love through reincarnation on the dreamy ‘In My Last Life’ and whispers of stalking ex-lovers from beyond the grave on the shuffling, Timbaland-esque beats of ‘Immortal Lover’. 

Ane Brun’s three turns, meanwhile, are as diverse as they are majestic. Nodding back to classics 80s ballads from Kate Bush and Sade, ’Love You More’ is a slow-building indie-pop beauty loaded with joy and musicality. Somewhere between Aphex Twin and The XX, ’Hold On To You’ is a string-laden, bittersweet ode to the recently departed, whilst the psychedelic synth-pop of ’Your Eyes’ is an energetic gem.

And then there’s closer ‘End of All Things’, an anthemic, arm-waving electronica excursion, where Alison May sings in ode to a recently lost love - capturing all the celebration, uncertainty and emotion at the end of a beautiful road. A perfect closer, but ‘In My Last Life’ is also an album that needs to be taken in its entirety. 

Taking as one cohesive and beautifully constructed whole, the 8-track LP represents an journey that will surprise, stun and overwhelm those that submit to its charms - a truly personal masterpiece with all the musicality and detail that Andrew’s fans know and love him for.

Orkidea has been one of Scandinavia’s leading DJs since the early 90s. He is best known for his unique blend of trance and progressive: credible and firmly rooted in the underground origins of trance. His music has been supported by a wide variety of DJs from the ultimate taste makers such as Pete Tong and Sasha to stadium filling titans Armin van Buuren and Tiesto. All artists that he has enjoyed sharing the stage with too.

Tapio Hakanen aka Orkidea has released four full length albums for Black Hole, AVA and Universal Music. He is best known for classics such as Unity, YearZero and Nana and timeless remixes of Way Out West’s Killa, Aalto’s Rush and Tiesto’s Flight 643. Lately he has been one of the key creative forces in Solarstone’s Pure Trance movement and has had the pleasure of mixing the first compilation, releasing on the label and performing at their high profile events around the globe. Orkidea is also a member of the critically acclaimed VII DJ collective.

Throughout his career, Orkidea has been voted seven times as #1 DJ in Finland and two times the most popular DJ in Scandinavia and made it to the DJ Mag Top 200 and Tranceaddict Top 100 lists. He has had 32 Beatport Top 100 tracks, one iTunes #1 album, a Finnish singles chart #1 and a Beatport Trance #1 single under his belt alongside over 30 million plays in YouTube, SoundCloud and Spotify.

Since his first gigs at illegal squat house underground raves in 1992, Orkidea has played over 2000 gigs around the world at legendary venues such as Ministry of Sound in London, Cafe del Mar in Ibiza, Tresor in Berlin, Pacha in Buenos Aires and Avalon in Los Angeles, as well as some of world’s most prestigious events including Dreamstate USA, Luminosity, Transmission and Amsterdam ADE.

Between his peers, he is known as being driven by his constant need to evolve and create. Something he fulfills by uniting, supporting and inspiring the people and movements he is passionate about.
