Tapio Hakanen, better known by his stage name DJ Orkidea (or sometimes just Orkidea), is a Finnish electronic music artist. DJ Orkidea has been one of Scandinavia’s top DJs for over 10 years and has been voted twice ’Most Popular Nordic DJ’ in Swedish/Danish Megamind’s voting and elected five times as ’Best DJ’ in Finnish Club Awards. His track Killa in 2005 was a hit in Finland. Orkidea has made remixes for big trance labels like Anjunabeats or Hooj Choons and for artists like Tiësto, Tilt, and Way Out West. DJ Orkidea is employed as a sound design manager at Nokia Corporation.

It’s been amazing twenty years since me and my friends started organizing illegal raves in the squat houses of Helsinki in early 90s. Most bizarre experience must have been DJing for Jean-Paul Gaultier and Helena Christensen at a Berlin fetish club Kit Kat after their first ever Berlin show. Most flashy ones have been entertaining the rich & famous of Hong Kong or Russia while warming up Chemical Brothers, Paul van Dyk or Underworld was something I’ll never forget. From the venues I’ve DJed Tresor in Berlin, Pacha in Ibiza, Ministry of Sound in London and CODE in Tokyo were special places to play.

My recording career started in 1998 with Slusnik Luna’s Nicklas Renqvist. ‘Unity‘ was signed to british Steelfish label and found it’s way to Gatecrasher and Renaissance compilations. Sasha and Oakenfold opened their Essential Mixes with it and Pete Tong played it on BBC Radio 1. Gigs with DJ Tiesto lead into signing to his Black Hole label while other releases include ‘Embrace’ on Five AM and ‘Beautiful‘ on Sential (finnish national singles chart #1). Most famous colaborations include ‘YearZero‘ together with Andy Moor, ‘God’s Garden‘ together with David West and ‘Zeitgeist‘ with Solarstone. My remixes include Aalto’s ‘Rush‘ made together with Super8, Stage One remix made for Hooj Choons, Way Out West’s ‘Killa‘ and more recently a bootleg remix of Hans Zimmer’s ‘Time‘ from Inception soundtrack which Paul Oakenfold loved so much he did his own edit. In 2011 I released my third artist album “20” which also celebrates my twenty years of DJing.

As promoters we have come a very long way from the days of illegal warehouse raves. Together with my friends, we have run Club Unity for over ten years, promoted Renaissance’s events in Helsinki and organized events called “Pacifique” for almost 3000 people in a water park. We have had fun at 16 hour Sunday clubbing sessions at DTM and have brought Jose Padilla to Finland. We have organised events on boats, in parks, on ice-skating rinks and even did one of Finland’s first flash mobs: the infamous One Minute Raves. The longest set I’ve ever played was 23 hours on New Year’s Day in 2010. To me electronic music and club culture has always been about open-mindness, unity amongst people and pushing the musical boundaries forward, whether it’s ambient concert in a park or full on rave in warehouse. A tradition that’s unofficially linked their last 4 years with a 3-strong arc of ‘Slowmotion’ tracks, each has augured a major new Solarstone or Orkidea release or project. As the first purpose-produced track from his forthcoming, keenly anticipated ‘Electronic Architecture³’compilation, No. ‘III’ in the series is no different. Together the pair deliver another piece of righteously dark, long and supremely strong subterranean-minded trance.
Solarstone & Orkidea are back to strike three for three with the latest in their sequential ‘Slowmotion’ series. The pair’s Original Mix steams from port through coolly undulated bass waves and casually swelled 80s-edged synthesis, tipping a blasé vocal salute to arch synth-masters Yello as it embarks. 
Churning those waters ever deeper, female siren-song harmonies heighten its atmosphere, before Richard & Tapio channel the track into the glockenspiel-like orchestral chime of the break. With the tempo’s dial securely locked to trance-progressive, ‘Slowmotion III” proceeds to deliver one laser-lit FX tweak, frisson-filled sequential development and masterfully delivered key change after another. 

Pure mood-food for those that like to explore the dark underbelly of trance, the Original Mix of ‘Slowmotion III’ arrives on Beatport on June 30th.

After debuting on the compilation The Sound of Garuda: Chapter 3, Tom Fall's remix of Ben Gold's classic hit 'Fall With Me' feat. The Glass Child and Juventa's remix of Ben's 'Where Life Takes Us' will be released on a special EP on June 10 through Garuda Music.

"For the remixes of 'Fall With Me' and Where 'Life Takes Us' I chose two of my favourite producers right now," says Ben. "They both have delivered outstanding remixes that have been rocking my dance floors all across the globe."

Since working with the likes of Cosmic Gate, TyDi, Morgan Page & W&W, Finnish producer Tom Fall has now been given the ambitious task of remixing Ben's beautiful Beatport chart-topping hit 'Fall With Me.' Fall's version takes the classic Trance original to the darker progressive side, with squealing synths and hard-hitting percussion, while at the same time instilling The Glass Child's haunting vocals in such a way to allow them to remain the star. 

19-year-old up-and-comer Juventa has reworked Ben's instrumental track 'Where Life Takes Us,' which was previously featured on Garuda: The Best of 2012 mixed by Craig Connelly. Since crafting his first remix at only 15-years-old, Juventa has quickly established a name for himself in the industry with his fresh take on the trance genre. Now on remix duty for the first time with Garuda, Juventa has stayed true to the popular original's piano breakdown, while adding in a new epic buildup and club-ready beat. 

With both tracks already receiving support from Gareth Emery and Markus Schulz, these remixes are sure to become summer festival favorites among Trance and Progressive artists worldwide.

Orkidea has been one of Scandinavia’s leading DJs since the early 90s. He is best known for his unique blend of trance and progressive: credible and firmly rooted in the underground origins of trance. His music has been supported by a wide variety of DJs from the ultimate taste makers such as Pete Tong and Sasha to stadium filling titans Armin van Buuren and Tiesto. All artists that he has enjoyed sharing the stage with too.

Tapio Hakanen aka Orkidea has released four full length albums for Black Hole, AVA and Universal Music. He is best known for classics such as Unity, YearZero and Nana and timeless remixes of Way Out West’s Killa, Aalto’s Rush and Tiesto’s Flight 643. Lately he has been one of the key creative forces in Solarstone’s Pure Trance movement and has had the pleasure of mixing the first compilation, releasing on the label and performing at their high profile events around the globe. Orkidea is also a member of the critically acclaimed VII DJ collective.

Throughout his career, Orkidea has been voted seven times as #1 DJ in Finland and two times the most popular DJ in Scandinavia and made it to the DJ Mag Top 200 and Tranceaddict Top 100 lists. He has had 32 Beatport Top 100 tracks, one iTunes #1 album, a Finnish singles chart #1 and a Beatport Trance #1 single under his belt alongside over 30 million plays in YouTube, SoundCloud and Spotify.

Since his first gigs at illegal squat house underground raves in 1992, Orkidea has played over 2000 gigs around the world at legendary venues such as Ministry of Sound in London, Cafe del Mar in Ibiza, Tresor in Berlin, Pacha in Buenos Aires and Avalon in Los Angeles, as well as some of world’s most prestigious events including Dreamstate USA, Luminosity, Transmission and Amsterdam ADE.

Between his peers, he is known as being driven by his constant need to evolve and create. Something he fulfills by uniting, supporting and inspiring the people and movements he is passionate about. Dedication to the scene and ethos of “Forward Forever, Backwards Never” has kept Orkidea moving and progressing for over 25 years and it’s still what keeps him as relevant and credible as ever.
