In this afternoon’s silent sitting with Moojibaba during the Rishikesh satsang season, we are given the opportunity to sit together in silence with the Master, and to be present and open.

“Each time it is completely new, but it is likely that at some intervals you might hear my voice. I won’t be speaking to your mind, so the best way to listen is just to be in a neutral, open space. Understanding will take place, a pointing will come to remind you. It is only in some way a synopsis and the quintessence of the pointings I have been making over these days.

Never mind the mind; there is nothing to fix or to change. You are already the Self — for a long time dreaming you are separate from the Self. Now you rest inside your own splendour. Sit inside your own radiance.”

We don’t know yet what this thing will end up doing to us, but so far it seems to be really good at bringing anything resembling “business as usual” to a halt. With that in mind, is the corona crisis a horrific affliction or a golden opportunity? Or is it both? Listen in on author, poet and former palliative care worker Stephen Jenkinson’s take on the situation.

Stephen Jenkinson is the founder of Orphan Wisdom School, a place for people yearning for a deeper, more connected life -- one that embraces all aspects of what it means to be human.  He is also a teacher, storyteller, and author.  In 2015, he penned the award winning book, "Die Wise," focused on the phobic way our culture approaches death and dying.  More recently, he published, "Come of Age," a impassioned call for raising a generations of Elders who can guide us in our stewardship of the planet and species.

In this interview with ICCE founder and director, Scott D. Miller, he addresses the North American response to the COVID-19 outbreak, paying particular attention to how the West's "death illiteracy" distorts it's planning and  mitigation efforts, thereby increasing suffering and perpetuating the very fears it seeks to relieve.

Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Stephen Jenkinson.

Culture activist, teacher, author ~ Stephen teaches internationally and is the creator and principal instructor of the Orphan Wisdom School, co-founded the school with Nathalie Roy in 2010, convening semi-annually in Deacon, Ontario, and in northern Europe. He has Master’s degrees from Harvard University (Theology) and the University of Toronto (Social Work). Apprenticed to a master storyteller when a young man, he has worked extensively with dying people and their families, is former programme director in a major Canadian hospital, former assistant professor in a prominent Canadian medical school. He is also a sculptor, traditional canoe builder whose house won a Governor General’s Award for architecture. Since co-founding Nights of Grief and Mystery with Gregory Hoskins in 2015, he has toured this musical/tent show revival/storytelling/ceremony of a show across North America, U.K. and Europe and Australia and New Zealand.

He is the author of Come of Age: The Case for Elderhood in a Time of Trouble (2018), the award-winning Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul (2015), Homecoming: The Haiku Sessions (a live teaching from 2013), How it All Could Be: A workbook for dying people and those who love them (2009), Angel and Executioner: Grief and the Love of Life – (a live teaching from 2009), and Money and The Soul’s Desires: A Meditation (2002). He is contributing author to Palliative Care – Core Skills and Clinical Competencies (2007).

Stephen Jenkinson is also the subject of the feature length documentary film Griefwalker (National Film Board of Canada, 2008, dir. Tim Wilson), a portrait of his work with dying people, and Lost Nation Road, a shorter documentary on the crafting of the Nights of Grief and Mystery tours (2019, dir. Ian Mackenzie).
