Swedish producer Ivan Berggren, aka Paresse, returns to Eskimo Recordings with Meat Robots, an underground house number whose acid bass lines and ricocheting percussion will have even assembly line robots jacking as it builds to a hypnotic conclusion. The track was inspired by Berggren's wrestling with the age-old question of just what we are, simply biological machines running on electrical impulses and chemical reactions, or vessels filled with some ineffable spirit.

 

With releases on labels like Eskimo, Frau Blau and Correspondant, and collaborations with artists such as Titiyo, Paresse's small but perfectly formed discography that's draw upon the sounds of electronica, dub, Italo disco its easy toes why his records have found favour with DJs from across the musical spectrum from Yuksek and Jamie Jones to The Organism and Phillipi & Rodrigo onto the likes of Purple Disco Machine and Ewan Pearson.

Behind the next release on Meant Records are Italian duo Boot & Tax, a relatively new pairing made up of Claudio Brioschi and Cristian Croce. Here they serve up three great originals baced with a stellar remix from Alien Alien.
Before now, Boot & Tax have released two extremely well received EPs on JD Twitch’s Optimo Trax and have also recently had their music licensed to Erol Alkan’s Fabric live 77, so the pair are really on the up.
Title track ‘Brace Brace’ is first and is an elastic, analogue workout with gurgling synth lines riding up and down atop steely drums as punky vocals come on at various intervals. Acid and electro, techno and house all get bottled up in the arrangement, which is fresh and just what you would expect of someone backed by JD Twitch.
The Alien Alien remix of this one is slow and trudging, purposeful and swampy. Snaking synths, coarse claps and a sense of foreboding pervade this most groovy of slo mo cuts.
‘Niente Per Niente’ is a dark but balearic feeling bit of chugging disco, with big licks and groaning bass all gliding along at an inviting tempo. Breathy female ad libs add a sense of character to the shadowy drums and ensure this one will set parties like ALFOS on fire. Lastly, ‘Balkan Youth’ gets much more cosmic with its flipping synths, twinkly melodies and rattling percussive patterns. Ascending ever higher, it takes you on a ride through the cosmos and dumps you out somewhere altogether happier.
This is sure to be a breakout release for Boot & Tax who seem right at the heart of the analogue disco revolution.

B1 - Boot & Tax - Niente Per Niente (Original Mix)

As they did on their last release, Hell Yeah once again look to offer new takes on some of their excellent recent album projects here. This new EP finds four producers tackling tracks from Tempelhof’s blissful and beautiful, ambient and slo-mo work alongside Gigi Masin, namely 2014’s Hoshi. Those producers are Ptaki, Balearic Gabba Sound System as well as label regular Luminodisco and the legendary Reverso 68.

First up is fast rising The Very Polish Cut-Outs artist Ptaki, who with his remix offers up a seductive and sombre number with lazy chords, gently swaying drums and a subtle balearic feel. Dreamy vocals complete the picture, but buy the EP digitally and you will also get a bonus instrumental.

Then comes the label’s in house and off kilter production team, Balearic Gabba Sound System, who flip ‘Buena Onda’ into a deep cut bit of sunset disco with glowing arps, elastic drums and sweeping string sounds in typically stylish fashion.

It’s all very romantic and sun kissed and that continues with Reverso 68 aka long time balearic stars Pete Herbert and Phil Mison.
Their take on Red Venus is one that slowly builds in stature, with plenty of lush pads, cute stabs and percolating drums that really lift you up.

Lastly, Hell Yeah regular Luminodisco gets a little more broken up and experimental with his dishevelled but soulful sounding version of My Velvet Book It’s slouchy like a hip hop record, but over all, like a modern take on Don Carlos.
