Mark Henning makes a welcome return to Soma with yet more jaw dropping tracks with the Blackout EP. Going back to his analogue roots, Mark has crafted two tough floor burners laden with his signature funked up basslines and crafty drum programming.

Title track Blackout rocks in with melted vocal samples over that ominous 909 kick, building slowly with a lush pad, the perfect intro to what will follow…Mark brings a perfectly sequenced bassline that growls yet remains as funky as can be. Layers of hi hats work their way as the bassline mutates in the background. Mark keeps this this track deep as the pad once again glides in giving a bit of Motor City feel. This is real machine funk.

On Jack & Jill Henning keeps it stripped back but no less driving. This is a full on analogue monster. A melodic synth line backed by straight up 909 drums work this track into a frenzy with complete ease. With the mere opening of filters and simplistic use of the revered drum machine Mark has built a track that will whip any dance floor up.

A firm favourite at Soma, Mark always delivers the good and with this EP of machine fuelled techno he looks to set Techno alight with his unique and quirky production.

To be free, means to be a freak. Whether as a DJ, label manager, T-Shirt creator or all-round talent – since two decades, Ellen Allien is one of Berlin’s exceptional phenomena that have created her own universe with the combination of old school-based underground love and contemporary experimental spirit. After the lovely musical affair with Thomas Muller for the track „Free Nation“, for her new solo release we hear the anniversary bells ringing. The three tracks – which are co-produced by Martin Eyerer and Skinnerbox – already mark the 300th catalog number of BPitch Control.
The „Freak EP“ is not only the result of the last months in Berlin; it also flags up the change to Ibiza, where Ellen uses the warm season to spray her positive vibe during her residency in DC 10. „Butterfly“ acts like the kick-off and not only host graceful 808 pinpricks, with the dreamy melody in the background a nostalgic aura raises that reveals Ellen’s warmer side. Especially the bass rumble emphasizes the physicality of her music in an impressive manner – in short: pure love. „Come To
Me“ is desire and passion within seven and a half minutes. In addition to the deep house frame groovy beats pushes in the foreground that sets free a hypnotic mantra. Spineless dancefloor magic that rewinds time with the haunting rave signal, floating Roland synths and the SH101 raveline. With the title track „Freak The Night Away“, Ellen once more succeeded in creating a hymn that embodies both the slogan of every great night as well as the strong atmosphere of her energetic DJ sets. Again, we hear Ellen’s charming voice – crazy, playful, creative. Following the motto: just go! With rattling claps and a warm bass, dancing won’t become a compulsion; the track clearly goes under the skin with its 303 acid hints as well as Roland piano sounds and opens the gate to another dimension. The dynamic duo of Sandman &amp; Riverside are at it again as the FastFWD label unleashes its eleventh release. Their Play Wit You EP is chock full of sexy house funk with top notch remixes from a couple of house music&rsquo;s influential tastemakers, Ron Trent and DJ Minx. The EP contains three originals featuring vocalist Kymberli Wright, all layered with drumbeats and synthesizers of varying timbres to take the listener on a whimsical journey &hellip; all cuts are bonafide galactic head nodders. First introduced to the house world via the Defected label, Kymberli Wright&rsquo;s soulful vocals gained notice throughout Detroit and beyond through her contribution to all-female jazz band Straight Ahead as well as having worked alongside such noted artists as Mary J. Blige and George Clinton. The first track with Sandman &amp; Riverside is &ldquo;Play Wit You,&rdquo; a Detroit-flavored gem filled with popping drum machine percussion, dueling synth melodies, and Wright&rsquo;s irresistible vocal hooks on top. &ldquo;PopTune&rdquo; is next, offering an enticing throwback to club music of the late &lsquo;80s within some powerful beats. Add Ms. Wright&rsquo;s wonderful vocal lines and this cut takes on the feel of Human League meets Shannon. The third track on the EP is &ldquo;SuperSonic,&rdquo; not to be confused with the classic JJ Fad ditty, though it&rsquo;s not too far off. Sandman &amp; Riverside&rsquo;s funk production backs the swirling, processed, and synthesized vocal phrases and outer space vibes. A pared-down Dub of this appealing track is also available. On the remix tip, the Prescription Records&rsquo; legendary Ron Trent reveals a hypnotic ten minute revision of &ldquo;Play Wit You&rdquo; that merges sensual loops and vocal effects into the soundtrack to a dark dance floor full of bodies in motion. It&rsquo;s a lofter&rsquo;s dream. Detroit&rsquo;s DJ Minx (Women On Wax) offers her vocal and instrumental Queen Beats versions which satisfy through booming low end, solid late night rhythms, and building, melodic chords. It&rsquo;ll have folks in the club grooving with drinks high in the air.
