Ceres was produced in a basement studio I had setup in the middle of winter. I remember sketching out the main melody on the Rhodes, layering the ambience, and building the drums out of foley recordings I took in the forest. The sketch started to paint the picture of this open landscape to me. That image really stood out, and finishing the track almost felt like an escape from the studio to that place... Hope you enjoy.

Ian M Hazeldine records under the alias Antonymes, hailing from Hawarden, a small village in North Wales, whose most famous inhabitant was William Ewart Gladstone. He creates atmospheric melodies, using various pianos, celesta, strings, church organ and field recordings, and has had releases on Soundcolours, Cathedral Transmissions, Hidden Shoal, Time Released Sound and Rural Colours.

With a long standing interest in music making and active listening, Hazeldine works with any influences, from his surrounding landscape to the artists he has worked with. His compositions often take on a semi-improvised structure with accidental atmospheres used as a starting point. As well as his own projects, Hazeldine also works with Marconi Union's Richard Talbot, under the name Prospector. He also works as a graphic designer, film maker and photographer, having art directed many of the Hibernate releases including our critically acclaimed vinyl series, and has worked with many other artists and labels including Facture, Field Rotation and Olan Mill.

In late 2009 Antonymes released 'Beauty Becomes the Enemy of the Future' on Cathedral Transmissions of which the CD is now unavailable. Since then he has revisited the album, which has culminated a new release, 'There Can Be No True Beauty Without Decay'. Hazeldine's own reworkings are intertwined with those of friends Ian Hawgood, Isnaj Dui, Offthesky, Field Rotation, Wil Bolton, Spheruleus and James Banbury to create an album of captivating melancholy and beauty. The guest reworkings venture into other, darker territories, where one might be harder pressed to identify the original material.

The sleeve features beautiful images of the North Wales landscape by Richard Outram, fitting the music perfectly.

Lucie dedicates her creative practice to object-oriented improvisation, performance, interactive installation and theoretical and empirical research in the fields of Deep Ecology and New Materialism.

This ongoing inquiry is a fluid continuation of her studies of Sound Arts and Design at the University of the Arts London from where she graduated in 2018. She then returned as a visiting lecturer of Improvisation and Performative Practice in 2019, inhering the post from her former professor and well-respected writer and musician David Toop.

She regularly performs solo and group improvisations with her ever-growing ensemble of objects, materials and small electronics under her real name and with analog and digital electronics under her electronic music moniker Avsluta in venues across London and around Europe. In the past two years, these two projects have been going through an ongoing process of merging.

Igniting the flight for number 20 on Anthea’s prolific Partisan label is the young and talented Argentinian, JUAAN. His direct and energetic productions have nudged him on to the radar of the underground, moving further in an upward trajectory with his “Soy Piola” EP. 
 
Built upon distinct and hypnotic synths is the A1 “Eclipc”, its transcending energy will become etched in your memory, creating a particular mood on the most discerning of dance floors. Bringing a spaced out yet dramatic vibe to the EP is “Mestreso”, an acid infused quest to an otherworldly atmosphere. 
 
The enormous “Puede Llegar” launches us into the B side, the tight and punchy drum arrangement creates a sophisticated groove, playing co-pilot to the enthusiastic elastic bass that bubbles throughout. Rounding off the EP is the sub-heavy title track “Soy Piola”, a tripped out and stripped back voyage, laced with acid splashes ready to stretch the mind of the listeners. 
 
Although only young Juan F’s outlook with music is mature, he draws inspiration and influences from the 90’s, molding this ethos into his own modern day interpretation, aiming to create something timeless for the dancers of today, but reminiscent of the dusty sounds of the past; something he also aims to enforce within his DJ sets, never restrained by genre.

Berlin-based producer Ryan Davis says his new album ‘Through The Mirror Glass’ has existed in idea-form for a very long time – most of his life, in fact. The album is inspired by the movies he grew up watching with soundtracks by James Horner, Thomas Newman and Jóhann Jóhannsson, and the tropes and rhythms of electronic music. Davis has wanted to connect the two ever since he started producing, so this 12-track album is his first full-length foray into cinematic electronic music.

Davis teamed up with Anjunadeep for the first time in 2012 with a remix of Andrew Bayer’s catalogue classic ‘Gaff’s Eulogy’. This led to a series of EPs with the label showcasing the melodic, down-tempo side to his artistry. He’d long wanted to create a full-length project for Anjuna, so when Above & Beyond launched Reflections in 2022, Davis knew he’d found the perfect home for his next album.

“With electronic music I have access to a never-ending palette of sounds,” Davis says. “This album has been inside me for ages, but the technology just wasn’t there yet. I couldn’t re-create an orchestra without hiring one, but now Spitfire Audio has built these incredible samples and I have BBC One’s orchestra at my fingertips.”

And he makes full use of it on the first single ‘Altitudes’. “With ‘Altitudes’ I programmed different rhythmic patterns to create these moving electronic dots and connect them with the liveliness of the piano and orchestra. I used an electronic kick drum layered with a drum used in classical arrangements to connect old and new, and that’s really the essence of the album - it merges my musical past and links it with the future.”

Ultimately, Ryan Davis hopes ‘Through The Mirror Glass’ will act as a sonic space to reflect and hold fragile memories. The mirror glass is a way to look at yourself, and simultaneously look behind you, at what’s brought you to this point.

‘Through The Mirror Glass’ is out 5th December on Reflections. The first single ‘Altitudes’ is out now.

‘Black Box Animals’ is the debut release from the Italian duo, Luton, formed in 2017 by Roberto P. Siguera and Attilio Novellino. The album is a textural feast of classically composed phrasing and heavily tar-coated mechanics. Crawling abstract electronic structures meld seamlessly into a wide array of electro-acoustics, built upon a fine edge that is focused on mood as much as melody. With each piece Luton deliver their own curious venom, striving for contrast, never settling into a predetermined genre. 

Contradiction permeates ‘Black Box Animals.’ Caution and weariness are etched into its themes. Luton feeds this uncertainty with its ability to create deeply affecting landscapes, as isolated and claustrophobic as they are warm and disarming. Within these dim seductions, a perplexing balance resides, something so familiar and primal, yet in the same breath so foreign and cryptic.  In truth, the more human, acoustic aspects of Luton’s sound are so tightly woven to that of the machine, one would be hard pressed to find any edges at all.

‘Black Box Animals’ was recorded around Europe with Luton Sinfonietta Orchestra, during several sessions of improvisation and post production in Stockholm, Manchester, Munich and Turin. In addition to the orchestral scores, written by Rob, both musicians played various other instruments including classical guitar, ancient Russian zither, piano, electric bass and guitars, e-bow, pedals and electronics. All tracks were finalized by Attilio in order to find their otherworldly magic.

The album shares some of the moodiness and frantic delivery of Deaf Center or even Ben Frost’s works for film.  Elsewhere, the intense drive and alchemic meld of electro-acoustic elements recall the likes of Rafael Anton Irisarri or Tim Hecker. While Luton find commonalities with these well-known masters, ‘Black Box Animals’ makes an impression all its own, creating an array of complex emotions, leaving us feeling a bit dirty, humbled, inexplicably at ease, perhaps off guard just enough to reshape our damaged conscious into a form of its own likeness.

Robin Schlochtermeier is an Anglo-German composer who has written the music for several award-winning broadcast documentaries and features. Classically trained, his music often combines organic sound design elements (and occasionally synthesis) with more traditional instrumentation (piano, orchestra).

Most recently Robin composed the music for 'The Spy Who Fell to Earth', an international espionage documentary which was released on Netflix worldwide in 2019. Robin, among others, also scored 'Virgin Queen's Fatal Affair' (Best Specialist Factual - Royal Television Society Awards), the features 'Queens of Syria' (Black Pearl Award - Abu Dhabi Film Festival), 'Retreat' (Premiere at Screenplay Shetland Festival, curated by UK film critic Mark Kermode), 'Oh No, Not Rudy Again!' (Cannes film festival 2015), and 'Strings' (British Independent Film Award).

"Spectral" is the first solo album of Robin Schlochtermeier. It's a set of slow, sometimes ambient pieces that function like distant echoes of childlike experiences of the natural and material world.

“My inspiration for the album is tied up in having become a father recently,” says composer Robin Schlochtermeier. ”As my daughter’s consciousness was forming I would often catch an amazed look on her face or notice that she stopped and stared at some small detail in her environment. This would frequently evoke a profound sense of mystery in me, and I grew curious as to what was causing her to react in such ways.”

The pieces on Spectral are attempts to capture some of this mysterious, nebulous spirit of bafflement and wonderment. “Seeing the world through my daughter’s eyes reminded me of the experiences the world can produce in our minds when we are open, receptive and boundary-less”, says Robin. “I started to wonder if I was half-remembering my own experiences of the world from when I hadn’t yet been trained to carve it up into neat concepts.” The result are pieces like “Lapping”, which in its slow, circular motion points to a rhythm of life unaffected by expectations of busyness, while rooted in a sense of grandeur and timeless wonder.

Spectral was recorded using a British upright piano from the 1950s with original worn strings, which are occasionally dampened with poster putty. The other elements are all forms of electronics and sound design, including a software synth (Retrologue) and custom programmed sounds generated from the composer’s bank of original sample recordings.

One of the aims for the album was to explore a limited palette of sounds. Some pieces only contain 3 layers of sound, while some are a little more complex. “The intention was to create space and openness in the arrangements”, according to Robin. “This principle also led me to explore longer and longer forms. As I went on I felt increasingly drawn to longer emotional arcs, resulting finally in Sonnenstaub."
