It all went down six days ago 
I had to pick up some stuff across town
I saw her then with some other joe
so I hunkered down and made no sound

But in the evening I couldn't help but ask

She looked me in the eye and said
Yes, I knew him before you and I met,
and now that I've seen him again I know
that he is the man that I truly love

it is what it is, she said, I have no choice
and her serious manner and quiet voice
made me realize we were over and done
she picked up her things of choice
walked out the door and was gone

I lie on my back in the grass
watching the clouds as they pass
If this weight that has me cowed were lifted
I'd go with the clouds wherever they drifted

She Left

Sun is setting, not forgetting
that the day will need resetting
as the sun is going down
planets put on evening gowns

stars come shining, one by one
to mingle with the pantheon
stars are not exactly shy
soon the stars will fill the sky

if the night is clear and dark
and the moon is just an arc
you can see the constellations
rendering the sky's narration

see the hunter and his hounds
moving through the hunting grounds
hip and shoulders, head and feet
club and guard and belt and sheat

Meissa, Saiph and bright star Rigel
Alnitak and Alnilam
Mintaka and then some

Where do I go
I need someone to show me
now I just flow
letting aimlessness towe me
my hartbeat is slow
like steps through deep snow

I'd never go out on a date on a monday
and to ask for a date, I just wouldn't know what to say
so if I never get a call for a date on any other day
my quirks leave me stuck in the driveway

coming through the desert
on a nameless horse
moving through the edges
on a fickle course
I saw her from afar
outside a small beach bar
leaning on a lamppost
and I wanted to get close

as I was getting close to her
she jumped into a beach car
goin on a roller coaster
from bar to bazar
up and down the sanddunes
all across the bay
all through the afternoon
and she almost got away

unaware of my pursuit
she finally slowed down
on the top of a butte
near a sleepy town
so I caught up with her
and she did not demur
when I tipped my hat
and asked - can we confer

 - nice up here
 - yeah, it is
 - and that town over there
 - is my town

so we talked about this
exchanged some words about that
and we agreed what we were having
was a decent chat
so later in the day
as we made our way to town
I heard myself say
maybe It's time to settle down

Getting Closer

(Maybe I shouldn't have put this out. It's private and dark. I wrote the song as a way of coping.)

it doesn't apply to you
It's none of your concern
it doeesn't apply to us
and then suddenly it does

you read about some star
opening up 'bout her plight
you remember back far
a classmate actually died
but you're still alive
alive and well
and something as dark and blue
won't ever happen to you

your doctor tells you
she'll need to run some tests
and then she gives you the bad news
hopefully this hasn't gone too far
but surgery can't be avoided
you're going under the knife
and your ordinary life 
is going to be
turned around forever

It's not like life's unfair
it's not like the world has turned on you
it's just unreal
you're falling into a life
you know nothing about.

Just Unreal

I was out in the rain fixing a fence 
when a car approaced from the direction of the farm yard.

It was raining so hard I could barely see the car
it stopped with a jar nearly crashing into a sandbar
my little brothe was yelling from the driver's seat
hurry, get in, there's someone you've got to meet

An alien just landed on the porch
in a flying saucer powered by a torch
the ET has a message from Uncle George
whom he rescued from the bottom of Tallula Gorge

I got into the car and my brother drove us home
where I saw the flying saucer with its torch and all its chrome
a friendly looking alien was beaming - I'm Jerome
hope you don't mind me parking right in front of your dome.

He said George had been hurt, so he had taken him along
and now he's lazing on a beach on planet Z Z Bong
around a star known to you from a campfire song
but not in public records, we call it Singalong

George is doing fine, but he really misses you
so if you wanna come onboard I can take you there too
if you then all wanna go back to your little blue ball
that might be to the best for you and us and all

In math and logic the slashed circle denotes the empty set.

People say, it's gonna be ok,
I tell you, I promise
Don't be afraid, hang in there, stay,
you're strong, you'll get through this

The medical science of today
can fix whatever's not ok
send your worries back to yesterday

Where do they get it from? 
from anectodes? maybe from faith?
or do they just guess?

A doctor would never appeal to faith
she'd give you statistics at best
the typical survival rates

A consoling remark can be empty,
abstruse or just strange
and a soothing remark can never induce 
any substantial lasting change

I am usually better informed 'bout my own situation
than whoever is trying to cheer me up.
When you're in for a surgical operation
and your brother in law says it's just a breeze in a cup

Tell me a joke or give me some dope
in stead of giving me baseless hope
