‘Ostgut Ton | Fünfzehn + 1’ is a commemorative compilation celebrating 16 years of Ostgut Ton – and the first glimpses of light at the end of a long dark tunnel for parent club Berghain.

Originally planned for release in 2020, the music focuses on the interwoven nature of the label and the club in its multitude of different spaces and musical facets. Ostgut Ton artists and close affiliates worked together in pairs to make music dedicated to five different floors, each represented by a specific 12" vinyl. The result is a diverse selection of sometimes functional, other times more abstract sonic tributes; musical homages to spaces they have both influenced and been influenced by.

With the pandemic having forced the club to close temporarily, the collaborative nature of the 5x12" boxset represents an attempt to transcend varying degrees of isolation and to wrestle with memories of music and space that had been inaccessible. But certainly not forgotten.

The evolution of ‘A World Of Service’ has curved around genre collapsing and unexpected metamorphoses. Formerly the name of the monthly radio show JASSS hosted in Berlin, and soon to be the title of her expansive multi-sensory touring concept in collaboration with Ben Kreukniet, here ‘A World Of Service’ is powerfully concentrated in sonic form. Throughout the album JASSS muses on the especially current human and technological barriers to interconnectivity; both lyrically and musically she deconstructs the self, unmasks anxieties and interrogates the insufficiencies of language as applied to gender, identity and interpersonal relationships. Forming her own fluid, nuanced lexicon in response, JASSS seeks a deeper understanding of her multiple selves, emerging through unbridled adolescent rage and the wisdom of maturation, traversing liminality with abstract electronics and baroque industrial pop. Visually this is underscored by Matt Lambert’s uncanny floral cover portraiture, as well as the record’s distinct scent of wet earth, flower and woods developed for the album by Meri Bonastre and applied to the vinyl innersleeve.

Following the imaginative nostalgia of ‘Weightless’, her 2017 debut album for iDEAL Recordings, as well as her blistering dancefloor 12” for Whities / AD 93, ‘A World Of Service’ folds personal and societal concepts in on themselves, not seeking answers but rather luxuriating in the unique friction that questions create. JASSS is intensely focused yet musically unbridled; this is reflected in tonal shifts of ‘A World Of Service’. Through the computerised yearning and bruising of a heartbreak on “Luis”, to the jagged and wordless tundra of “Vapor Dentro”; the intriguing juxtaposition of warm, alluring Spanish vocals against rigid pillars of industrial heft and bass grind (“Camelo”), and the soaring maximalist industrial pop of the album’s closer, “Wish.”

As intensity rises through the pandemic-era trip hop of the album’s title track “A World Of Service”, JASSS sings:

“Pleasure /
Is nowhere to be found inside this world of service /
I call to be my life.”

Pleasure may remain elusive to her, but in the determination to make peace with her various identities in this technological age, JASSS offers a compelling glimpse into an essential type of artistic voice.

Making their first appearance on the label, Venezuelan deep house masters Sergio Munoz and Israel Sunshine aka Fur Coat are the next to release on the mighty Hot Creations. Title track ‘There’s No Time’ sees the darker side of the talented duo for an epic experience on the dance floor with deep growling basslines complemented with powerful electronic keys and dramatic builds. On the B-side Hot Creations favourite wAFF delivers a stellar and storming ‘Warehouse Remix’ picking up the pace with added vocals and percussion, packed with all the sonic energy we have come to expect from the young producer. Last up the Fur Coat duo deliver another golden original. ‘Together’ takes it deeper once again with a rumbling bassline and hypnotic synths and keys flowing through the layers to stimulate the senses.

Fur Coat previously remixed Russ Yallop’s ‘The Crossroads’ followed by their debut EP ‘Space Ballad’, featuring an unforgettable edit by TEED. However it would be their release ‘You and I’ featuring vocals from Cari Golden that would put the name Fur Coat on the map. At the end of 2012 they released their huge debut album ‘Mind Over Matter’ on Crosstown Rebels, with further ventures on labels such as Bpitch, Rebellion, Southern Fried Records, Noir, Get Physical and My Favorite Robot.

wAFF has rapidly gone strength to strength in the past few years after being taken under the wing of Jamie Jones, Lee Foss and Richy Ahmed. First coming to everyone’s attention with the huge ‘Jo Johnson’ EP, wAFF has gone on to acquire a heavy touring schedule and his more recent ‘Puke It Up’ EP released on the label only cemented his career in the industry further. Alongside his home label wAFF has also been releasing and remixing for labels such as Cocoon Recordings, Resonance Recordings and Rinse.

“I see Techno and House as an intrinsic part of day to day culture here in Berlin. So many lives and lifestyles (r)evolve around this music. Mine included. (In Berlin,) Techno and House inspire a level of identification and loyalty which I still find amazing. I also see a difference in how people deal with this music here compared to other cities where music can be very hype driven and there’s a pressure to innovate. In Berlin, Techno and House are more vented on a constant level without being questioned too much. It’s tried and tested — loved for exactly what it is.”

“I decided to call my album Folk because I feel that we all work with a sonic vocabulary that was developed by a relatively small set of pioneers 20 or 30 years ago, that took their cues from disco which was influenced by R&B, Funk, Soul, etc, down to the most primal ritualism of tribal drums. This sort of traditionalism appears to have been passed on from generation to generation with everyone adding their own perspective to it, thus making it more difficult to trace it all back to a source. One can argue that a lot of it is passed through records but I feel the most important ways of experiencing, enjoying and learning about the music happens inside a club. I also call this Folk as the blueprint of this music was laid out on what were originally cheap instruments from a dusty thrift store — in 1985, the TB-303 was the equivalent of a worn out acoustic guitar. Today this is reflected by the immense and accessible power of creation found in a $500 laptop running a crack of Reason or Ableton.”

Radio Slave readies a double A-side to mark the 100th release on Rekids this February.

Having recently celebrated ten years, the consistency of music on Matt Edwards’ Rekids is indisputable with releases from Nina Kraviz, Mr. G, David Morales, Peggy Gou and DJ Deep to name a few. Aside
from his A&R abilities Edwards’ extensive understanding of electronic music is evident in his various pseudonyms. Amongst these Radio Slave is easily his most illustrious and most fitting for the seminal label’s milestone 100th release.

Matt Edwards drops his eagerly anticipated debut Radio Slave album ‘Feel The Same’ via his Rekids imprint in September.

Easily his most recognisable nom de plume, Radio Slave was initially Matt’s pseudonym for remixes, with early reinterpretations of Kylie Minogue and New Order leading into frequent work for both major and independent labels. He’s now indisputably one of House and Techno’s most in-demand remixers, whilst original Radio Slave productions have gone on to appear via reputable imprints like Running Back, R&S, Ostgut Ton, Nonplus and Work Them Records.
Instrumental in supporting the music and careers of artists such as Nina Kraviz, Spencer Parker, Gerd Janson, and many others via his label Rekids - Edwards is held in high regard for his A&R abilities and has also established numerous other renowned labels such as Pyramids Of Mars, Cabin Fever, and The Double R. Now, more than 10 years since Rekids' inception and with over 100 releases under its belt, the influential figure announces the release of his debut Radio Slave album; a masterpiece of sophisticated electronic music that evokes the early spirit of dance music yet continues to forge his reputation as a cutting edge and innovative producer.

The album is a culmination of years as a DJ, producer and remixer; with influences spanning a range of genres such as breaks and jungle, acid, Balearic, ambient, dub, Chicago and also vocal samples exemplary of the Radio Slave sound. Opening with the beatless ‘2nd Home’, with its murky tones and field recordings, the album navigates between syncopated beats and ethereal voices as found in
‘Forana’, as well as screeching synths and moody basslines like in ‘Trans’.

More high tempo cuts like ‘Geisterstadt’ see Edwards shift towards electro, whereas heady break beats lay the foundation for ‘With You’. Alongside the album’s title track ‘Feel The Same’, ‘No Words / Just
This’ is one of the most dance floor focused cuts with its driving energy and metallic synths, while ‘Axis’ and ‘Draw’ see the producer venture towards a more minimal aesthetic.

Under his various guises Matt Edwards has continued to demonstrate how musically diverse he is as a producer without any compromise in quality. His REKID moniker features more of his downtempo work with a album release on Soul Jazz, not to mention timeless releases like ‘Next Stop Chicago’ and ‘Lost Star’ which still remain iconic today. The ‘RedHead’ LP saw the producer demonstrate his ability to collage sounds under The Machine, whilst alongside close friend Joel Martin the Quiet Village project is cinematic and heavily sample based, exploring evocative and understated soundscapes.

Exhibiting many of his signature production abilities whilst also demonstrating his more experimental side, ‘Feel The Same’ is an exceptional body of work that exemplifies Matt Edwards’ production and music writing, reaching a new level of sophistication. From start to finish the album is a testament to his versatility as an artist and a definitive full-length by one of electronic music’s most pivotal figures.

Single ‘Falling Angel’ is first to drop with remixes from two elite producers, Matthew Styles, who coproduced the album, and Pépé Bradock. Both heighten Dinky’s layered ethereal vocals and mesmerising melodies with their own movement and elements of dark and light.

Her sister named Alejandra Del Pilar Iglesias Rivera Dinky at birth. Born and raised in Santiago, Chile, as a child she studied Ballet and the Suzuki method of piano before relocating to New York to become a contemporary dancer. Her drive to make music brought her to Berlin a decade ago where she quickly became a dominant force in dance music, making her mark through releases on Carpark, Cocoon, Ostgut, and the critically acclaimed ‘Anemik’ album in 2009 on Mathew Jonson´s Wagon Repair. Her fifth studio album, ‘Dimension D’ sees her evolve into singer-songwriter and performer and take on a new musical direction. Long term friends with the Visionquest collective from their hedonistic days residing in Berlin, Dinky’s fresh approach fits within their ethereal and otherworldly style and follows the Footprintz album earlier this year.

Consistently on point DJ and musician Matthew Styles coproduced and mixed ‘Dimension D’ and will perform the album live in a series of dates this summer.

French DJ/Producer and prolific remixer Pépé Bradock has been an enigmatic figure on the scene since the early 90s always essential listening for anyone into deep house with a magic off kilter touch.
