Scruggs & Sonny Jim had ridden long since dealing the final blow to the plantoid behemoth that had first impeded their journey some many months ago. They had left that beast’s lair far behind, and happily so for the stench of commingled acrid sap and gunpowder that filled it once the pair had finished. Astonished by the wonders of this alien land, their journey had lead them through biomes never before seen, in which red rock sandstone bore forth soaring forests filled with idyllic glens and treacherous thickets alike. Through these, they had climbed in an ascent to a high plateau, and it was at this peak that the pair saw a sight unrivaled by any in their journey thus far.

Rising above the forest that continued onwards below was a great stone structure of peaks and turrets, connected by a network of bridges that hung precariously over the ravines and canyons of the mountainside upon which it was built. The building’s spires rose to a height of such impractical grandiosity that the pair wondered what the purpose of such a structure could be or, more than likely, could have been. For all of the stature that it had certainly once commanded, the building was a shell of its former self, a relic of unique hubris worn bare by the selfsame forces that allowed the forest beneath it to thrive. No light shone from its windows and no figures stood atop its balconies, for whatever cataclysm had befallen its creators had driven them from this place long ago. All of these thoughts passed through Scrugg’s mind as he gazed upwards, and to synthesize them he asked a single question of his partner, Sonny Jim.

“Hey, Sonny Jim,”
“Yeah Scruggs?”
“Why the hell would you bother hauling rocks all the way up there?”

With nothing but a grunt and a shrug in response, Sonny Jim spurred his horse onwards, and the two resumed their journey, riding into the shadow cast by the great castle that lay above.

BURR OAK drive the EATBRAIN horde into the shadowed depths of their latest EP, DARK AGE, the latest from the duo, and a follow up to their previous releases Roots of Evil & Hawkeye on the label. Within, the duo unleashes six tracks stacked with aggressive tonalities and futuristic textures that unveil the latest in the sonic tale of these twin bassline masterminds.

Joanna Syze: a name synonymous within the darker, moodier realms of drum and bass. No stranger to the music industry, with a DJ career and back catalogue spanning close to twenty years, Syze is renowned throughout the US & Europe for being one of the second wave of female artists –following on from the likes of DJ Rap, Kemistry & Storm etc., to break through not only as a DJ, but a highly competent producer, vocalist and businesswoman.

After a string of successful releases and collaborations throughout the noughties - including her unforgettable vocals on the seminal 'No Evil' by Kryptic Minds & Leon Switch, Syze shifted her focus to recording her debut LP for OHM Resistance - Rodina, which fittingly translates to “homeland” in Bulgarian and is Joanna's birthplace; a place entrenched into every fibre of her being and somewhere consistently referenced in many of her lyrics and work.

Fast forward to early 2016: after a five year hiatus to focus on her ongoing health issues, Joanna decided to begin working on her sophomore album –Surrender, another 17 track project but this time for Othercide Recordings. There are many familiar artist features on this album from both seasoned drum and bass veterans, right through to collaborations with the new breed of producers. The album includes the likes of Chris.SU, Akov, Barbarix, Volatile Cycle, Zardonic, Redpill & The Sect to name but a few – all laying down their own unique styles and identities. However, the feel & sound of Surrender remains unmistakably Syze throughout: moody, melancholy, instantly encapsulating with a heavy nod to the early/mid 2000's era of dark reese's and hypnotizing melodies that inspired her so much.

Within the labyrinthine concrete tunnels that sprawled out beneath the city pattered the soft footfalls of an expert infiltrator who moved with grace in contrast to their brutalist construction. Muffled by advanced technology, her movements would have been imperceptible anywhere else save for the desolate emptiness of this place. Another might be driven mad by the path she now walked as it circled and turned with no end in sight, but she had come determined. Hidden within this labyrinth was a vault of minosian value, containing a vast wealth of technical secrets her employer had paid much to acquire. Taking a moment to orient herself, she pondered what might truly be of value enough to be hidden within such a massive complex. Then she chuckled, remembering that the rich always wanted the same thing. “LASERS & STUFF”, she scoffed “All they ever care about is the lasers.

After sometime more spent within the byzantine tunnel complex, a new sight availed itself to the infiltrator. One tunnel ran straight forwards, terminating at a massive set of double titanium doors. Interspersed between her and that threshold lay a number of grids of light, burning blue-hot within the otherwise dimmed atmosphere of the tunnels. Within her mind sprung a reverie of another time, thoughts of the “spies” of old who had used all sorts of tricks to reveal hidden laser grids protecting their prize. Once more a grin came to her face. “That was before the lasers could kill” she thought as she altered her protective suit, disabling its mufflers and activating its muscular augmentation functionality. Returning her mind’s gaze to the matter at hand, she crouched low in preparation for the coup de grace. With little more than a twitch, she catapulted forth from her position, cracking the concrete beneath her under the force of her launch. With impossible speed she shot through the laser grids which had lain before her, the bite of their photons barely scratching the surface of her suit as they found but a miniscule moment’s purchase upon its surface. Powered by the momentum of her leap, the infiltrator’s fist connected with the center of the titanium doors, blowing them off their hinges with pure kinetic energy. Before her lay a small box upon a single pedestal, what seemed a token reward for her efforts. With nary a thought for its contents she attached it to her suit before once more catapulting towards the exit. The rich could depend on their LASERS & STUFF all they wanted, she thought. People like her would always find a way to beat them.

A-CRAY returns to the EATBRAIN label with the release of his 3 track LASERS & STUFF EP in an electric continuation of his previous audio assaults through the label. The titular LASERS & STUFF rings with the pulsar bursts of a bright snare that emanate above a deviously warped lead and strutting beat. PROXY’s overcharged bassline draws on an endless source of cyclical energy as it rises alongside a racing melody in an energetic fusion, whilst WASTED FUNK’s chromatic lead and frenzied percussion close the EP as they deliver a devastatingly weighty halftime audio sequence driven by its debauched bassline rhythm. With LASERS & STUFF, A-CRAY marks his first full solo EP on the EATBRAIN label charged with his unique sonic energy.

With his past on OTHERCIDE RECORDS marked by 2016’s Rethink EP, CURRENT VALUE’s recent efforts have seen releases on labels such as Blackout, Invisible, & Methlab Recordings. Now returning to OTHERCIDE RECORDS, CURRENT VALUE debuts a four track EP that carries his aberrantly innovative sound further onwards to new boundaries.  DISPELLING FEAR opens the EP with reverent string swells that soar alongside a ethereal vocal before diving at full force into the track’s torrential drumbeat. Within, they are twisted and warped by the volatile harmonic environment within into surging basslines and oscillating highs in equal measure. The titular FAR LAYER immediately discards with any semblance of convention, opting instead to create a an idyllic sonic landscape that hangs effortlessly in the air. Driven by a delicate piano arpeggio, the track swells calmly to a lush crescendo before fading into nothingness with similar grace. Following such a melodic interlude, FERROMAGNETIC provides harsh metallic textures which create an exercise in contrast, wrapped tightly around the track’s pulverizing drums for a devastating mechanical fusion. The EP then closes with PHOTOELECTRIC, which doubles down on the distortion of its predecessor with its dissonant bell tones and shredded bassline ending the look into CURRENT VALUE’s FAR LAYER with a decisive tone.  FAR LAYER thus explores a diverse range of sonic environments, from its most beautiful melodics to its most visceral basslines all of which are unified by the technical precision and otherworldly tones of CURRENT VALUE as they transmit via OTHERCIDE RECORDS.

What had once been but a small village had changed, coating itself in the metallic materials of a new age born of the prosperity that was wrought by its forebears, those who had bound demons in stone so many years ago. The elements of fire and brimstone with which such creatures once threatened the village now lay bound themselves, claimed and wielded as tools that had wrought the stairsteps of progress from the ruins of the city’s troubled past. As progress had waxed however, time waned, and few left still remembered the obelisk which lay hidden at the heart of their city, encased within a monument to victory over the realms’ more worldly foes. Within however, those foes of old had slumbered, keeping sharp the memories of their magical imprisonment. Outside, time had passed, and now arrived back to where it had once been. Thus with the waking of the demons is stone, the time of DIVERGENCE did once again begin.

It began subtly, as the influence of the demons seeped out from the ancient obelisk, transforming the visages of the metallic heroes who were their former jailors into subtly more monstrous forms. From the obelisks dark and rotted core seeped a sinister demonic poison, and ichor that worked its way into dark places both familiar and new. With it came the demons, who slithered out of their forgotten prison and found refuge amidst the smoke and flame now welcomed by those who had forbade them long before. As their power and number grew, their essence enveloped the city, immersing it in a sea of acrid darkness that choked living beings and the light of the sun with equal tenacity. Caught within this abyssal miasma, the minds of the city’s inhabitants corroded as their bodies mutated into horrendous forms, a slow, grueling process that spared those affected not a single horror. As day and night ceased to pass within the haze that strangled the city, the demons emerged from their dark places, assuming their de facto rulership over the city which was now carved in their image. Thus it was again that the world of the living was changed, therein by the darkness from which DIVERGENCE came.
EATBRAIN continues their DIVERGENCE compilation series with DIVERGENCE III, bringing together a monstrous roster including a surprise last ever appearance by the legendary FOREIGN BEGGARS produced by KILLBREAK, and label veterans TELEKINESIS, AGRESSOR BUNX, MIZO, THE CLAMPS, DISPHONIA, IHR, L 33, NAIS, COD3X, LIVEON, KUTLO and novel additions DISASZT, SHADOW SECT, SCREAMARTS, CHASER. Caught within this abyssal miasma, the minds of the city’s inhabitants corroded as their bodies mutated into horrendous forms, a slow, grueling process that spared those affected not a single horror. As day and night ceased to pass within the haze that strangled the city, the demons emerged from their dark places, assuming their de facto rulership over the city which was now carved in their image. Thus it was again that the world of the living was changed, therein by the darkness from which DIVERGENCE came.
