Same words, different world.

There was a time when the world was quiet. Or maybe it wasn’t the world—maybe it was just me. I remember the silence, the kind that wasn’t empty but full, the kind that settled softly like dusk over a slow-moving river. Back then, my mind was still a place I could rest in, not a storm I had to survive.

It must have started as a whisper, a small ripple in the stillness, something I thought would pass. But it grew until it became everything. Now, the quiet feels like something I dreamed, something too distant to be real. I chase it, reach for it in the rare moments when the chaos slows.

And I am left here, a drift in the wind, unable to remember what it felt like to simply be.

Sometimes, late at night, when the world is half-asleep, I almost hear it again. A memory of silence, pressed between heartbeats, between the ticking of the clock and the sigh of the wind against the glass. But it never stays. The storm always finds its way back, tearing through my thoughts, scattering them like leaves in a wind I cannot stop.

I wonder - was I ever truly at peace, or was it only the absence of knowing what would come? And if I was, if that silence was real, is it lost forever? Or is it waiting for me somewhere, just beyond the horizon?

Ricardo Donoso's latest release for Denovali is a dark, noisy, and aggressive piece, and whereas sometimes I would find this type of music to be a little more intrusive, I think that at this moment it is timely and on point. I'm starting to get a little vexed with our situation. And it's not because of isolation or the mindless flat routine. I'm getting irked with all the streaming from all platforms, with staring into someone's room for days on end, with adverts promising to help connect me to people, and with the output as inspired by this mess. And so, Donoso's music is a salvage, with scratching sounds, foreboding noisescapes, and post-techno beats. The seeping doom, the menacing expansion, and the organic clamour all fit on the page of his atonal work. And if you listen to this track premiere and follow through a quote behind the concept of his latest album, you'll understand the cure for the ongoing toil.

Terry Waite was taken hostage in Beirut in the late 1980s, before ISIS, before smartphones, before the Internet as we know it. He endured a mock execution during the first year of his five-year captivity, which was spent mostly in solitary confinement. Years later, during a Q&A session, he was asked to identify the main thing he had learned from his ordeal. The answer, came as a shock—it was not the excruciatingly hard-won appreciation for life and loved ones that one expects to hear. “Contemporary humanity,” declared Waite, “has lost the ability to engage in productive solitude.”

Ricardo Donoso's 9th studio album is titled "Content". It will be out on Denovali on May 29, 2020.

Tangent - The Origin Of Structures

Taken from Aksak Maboul's new 'Un Caïd EP', this track is a self-reconstruction of 'Un Caïd', which starts off as a remix and morphs into a totally wild new piece, with newly recorded vocals, keys and horns 

The EP comes out on Dec 11 and will also contain remixes by Hello Skinny, Spooky J, Jordan Fields x Marc Hollander, plus a radio edit of the track, which appeared on the legendary experimental pop band’s acclaimed double album 'Figures'. 

Vocalist Véronique Vincent’s enigmatic lyrics for 'Un Caïd' (“A Bigshot”) seem to reference a famous poet, maybe the bossy leader of an artistic movement born a century ago? But they’re mostly about thought, stares, eyes and eyelids (as illustrated in the upcoming music video).
