OUP Choral Music

These complete performances of Oxford’s Christmas, sacred, and secular choral music are a great way to discover new repertoire. The tracks are a selection of Oxford’s new choral publishing for 2018. We know that choral directors find our top-class recordings to be a real help when choosing pieces for their choir; these are conducted by Bob Chilcott, and engineered and produced by John Rutter. Here's a selection of works by Sarah Quartel, composed since OUP began publishing her work 5 years ago. You'll find sacred, secular, and Christmas music in a variety of voicings and styles.
Canadian composer, conductor, and educator Sarah Quartel is known for her fresh and exciting approach to choral music. Her works have been performed throughout North America and featured by groups such as the National Youth Choir of Canada, The Nathaniel Dett Chorale, and the a cappella group Rajaton. She became a conductor with Viva Children's Choirs in 2011, and continues to work as a guest clinician at various music education and choral events throughout Canada.

For SATB unaccompanied with hand drum.
This piece sets a joyful text celebrating the beauty found all around us. Characterized by tight harmonies and a dynamic hand drum line, the buoyant 7/8 metre drives the piece forward. Lush harmonies colour the hymn-like B section as the text evolves into a call for strength despite the troubles that may come.

This high-energy, majestic setting of well-known words from the psalms is a welcome addition to the service repertory. The changing metre brings the text to the fore, and the semiquaver movement that passes between parts creates a sense of motion and drive that is fitting for this uplifting and joyous hymn of praise.

O clap your hands — David Bednall

For SATB and organ   
Chilcott's setting of Psalm 96 is bright, optimistic, and celebratory. The sparkling organ part and fluctuation between 7/8 and 4/4 metres give the opening and closing sections a dance-like feel, while the central section is still, soft, and reflective.

O sing unto the Lord — Bob Chilcott

For SATB unaccompanied
This lively reimagining of the traditional hymn is a thrilling a cappella arrangement which pairs the soaring legato melody with a rhythmic vocal accompaniment. Together, these elements capture both the gentle hope and the profound joy contained in the text.

The 'Mass for All Saints' is a captivating setting of the Latin Missa brevis. The accessible choral lines, idiomatic organ part, and colourful harmonies make this an ideal work for choirs looking for a fresh take on familiar words.

For SATB and organ 
Francis Jackson's spirited setting of Psalm 150 is steeped in the English choral tradition. With contrapuntal writing, engaging interplay between choir and organ, effective word painting, and virtuosic organ writing, 'O praise God in his sanctuary' is a welcome addition to the service repertory.

Back And Forth (Acoustic)

For SSA and piano
This work was inspired by the Radcliffe Ladies' Choir and their motto 'friendship through singing'. The lilting vocal lines are underpinned by a delicate piano part, and the opening performance direction, 'contentedly rocking', describes the overall nature of the piece: peaceful, content, and easy-going.

This a cappella setting of evocative words by E. Pauline Johnson is immediately appealing, with its playful, swinging syncopations and dancing scat accompaniment.

Voice on the Wind

The Bird's Lullaby – Sarah Quartel

for SSA unaccompanied
Songbird sets an evocative text describing songbirds that spin tunes of gold. The catchy, colourful melody is first presented by tutti voices, and is then woven through the vocal parts, often to scat accompaniment. The setting ends with an effective passage of close imitation.
