In this episode of The Side Comment, Craig L. Symonds explores the character and temperament of Admiral Chester W Nimitz, the man who won the war in the Pacific during the Second World War.

Craig L. Symonds is Professor Emeritus at the United States Naval Academy, where he taught naval history for thirty years, including four years as History Department Chair. He also taught at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, England. From 2017 to 2020 he was the Ernest J. King Distinguished Professor of Maritime History at the U.S. Naval War College. He is the author of seventeen books, including "Decision at Sea", "Lincoln and his Admirals", "The Battle of Midway", "Neptune: The Allied Invasion of Europe and the D-Day Landings", and, most recently, "World War II at Sea: A Global History". His works have been translated into several languages and received numerous awards, including the Lincoln Prize, the Roosevelt Prize, and the Dudley Knox Medal for Lifetime Achievement.

T.V. Paul is James McGill Professor of International Relations in the Department of Political Science at McGill University, Montreal and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He served as the President of the International Studies Association (ISA) for 2016-17. He is also the Founding Director of the Global Research Network on Peaceful Change (GRENPEC). His books include "The Warrior State: Pakistan in the Contemporary World" (2013) and "Globalization and the National Security State" (with Norrin M. Ripsman, 2010), and he is the lead editor of "The Oxford Handbook of Peaceful Change in International Relations" (2021).

T.V. Paul on India's 2024 General Election - Episode 42 - The Side Comment

On this episode of The Side Comment, Richard English discusses the effectiveness of counter-terrorism efforts, as a less extensively examined phenomenon. Through a series of questions, he explores why it is an important topic for us to look at in a new way that considers successes and failures. Highlighting the case studies contained within his book, 'Does Counter-Terrorism Work?,' he illustrates how we can identify broader intuitions about what works well, and what doesn’t.

Richard English is Director of the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security, and Justice at Queen's University Belfast. His books include 'Does Terrorism Work? A History' (2016), and 'The Oxford Handbook of Terrorism' (co-edited, 2019). He is a Fellow of the British Academy, a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, an Honorary Fellow of Keble College Oxford, a Faculty Affiliate at the University of Chicago, and an Honorary Professor at the University of St Andrews. In 2018 he was awarded a CBE for services to the understanding of modern-day terrorism and political history.

Richard English on the Effectiveness of Counter-Terrorism - Episode 43 - The Side Comment

Harris discusses the history of the Church of  Latter-Day Saints complicated—and often controversial racial heritage—from Joseph Smith and Brigham Young through the civil rights movement to the moment in 1978 when church President Spencer W. Matthew Harris is Professor of History at Colorado State University Pueblo; he specializes in race and religion, civil rights, Mormon history, African American History, and American Religious history. On this episode, Andrea Temkin-Yu, author of the new guidebook 'Supporting Your Teens Mental Health,' talks about the small, intentional activities that all parents of teens can adopt in order to focus on building connections and combating the rise of mental health symptoms in adolescents.

Andrea Temkin-Yu is Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine, having earned her PsyD from The Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University. She completed her clinical internship at Bellevue Hospital Center/New York University Child Study Center and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Center for Youth Mental Health at Weill Cornell Medicine. Temkin-Yu specializes in parent-focused interventions and has expertise in cognitive behavioral therapy for the treatment of anxiety, depression, ADHD, and disruptive behaviors. Her research focuses on transdiagnostic interventions and improving treatments for youth and parents through technology.

The Branch Interview

With the growth of the capability of artificial intelligence (AI), there is growing concern that this technology could make millions of jobs – and their workers – obsolete. 

In the third episode of The Ballpark’s miniseries on AI and the US, the Phelan US Centre explored the impacts AI is already having on the workforce with Baobao Zhang, Maxwell Dean Associate Professor of the Politics of AI in the Political Science Department at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. Professor Zhang’s research and work focuses on trust in digital technology and the governance of artificial intelligence  

The discussion covers how recent advances in AI have shifted the landscape when it comes to labor automation, the anxiety that many people are feeling about the potential for AI to affect jobs and industries through automation, and what students should be doing to best prepare for a career in workplaces that will be affected by AI in the coming decades.
