Outerspace Podcast #021 - Sweepa [dubstep|drum n bass|jungle|bass|trap]

I started DJing and producing music in 2001 and early on I was captivated by this dark, almost industrial style of Drum & Bass being created by artists such as Kemal, Dom & Roland and Technical Itch and championed by DJs like Dieselboy. This music went on to influence what eventually became my early works under the pseudonym SPL.  After connecting with other producers and some of my heroes on the chat client AOL Instant Messenger (thanks Infiltrata AKA 12th Planet), my first release came out in 2005, a 12" vinyl release on Sinuous Records based in the UK. 

Shortly afterwards, I partnered up with another producer who goes by the name Limewax. We produced mostly on our individual projects, trading our progress over AOL internet chat and getting together weekly in the Netherlands (where I was living at the time). During this era we focused on pushing the limits of our sound on influential dark DnB labels such as Tech Itch recordings, Dylan's Freak Recordings and Renegade Hardware's Barcode imprint.  After building an audience in the scene, I started my on vinyl label "Lost Soul Recordings" which I would use as a launch pad for my own more experimental efforts and other work that I thought was important. From that point on, I contributed as SPL to over 35 different dark DnB vinyl releases which received DJ support from many of the genres great DJs as well as some experimental music legends and outsiders, as far reaching as folks like Aphex Twin. 

This mix features tracks that I was influenced by early on, what I consider to be darker classics, as well as music by my contemporaries and myself.  I also touch on newer music towards the end of the mix that I feel captures some of the lost vibe of "Golden Age Dark DnB".  Usually in DnB retrospective mixes, this darker sound is underrepresented so I'm putting this out to the world so people hear this important style.  These tracks are close to my heart and I hope that you enjoy the mix.

On the occasion of the Day of the Oceans, we would like to draw your attention to a young organization that, in the summer of 2019, together with many volunteer helpers in Turkey, has cleared the beaches of (plastic) trash. We have an excerpt from the blog of the founder of Oceanﬁghter Isabelle Wurm provided here for you:

​"Today, of course, we started again at the sea. Since Özlem had already warned me to come across a lot of garbage, I took my complete Oceanﬁ ghter equipment for safety's sake. Since I wanted to make a comparison where the size of the plastic is greatest, we visited a different beach every day. I could not tell a real difference, because all beaches were without exception covered in plastic. The hope, however, is not long in coming, that we can win this seemingly hopeless fight against the plastic plague! Because it did not take ﬁve minutes to pass by residents thanked me for my commitment! All of them collected items that deﬁnitely did not belong to the beach.

It seemed to give them great pleasure to help me and throw the trash into my bucket. Out of nowhere, we suddenly met Russian volleyball players. They also wanted to help us. Before they started, each of them got an Oceanﬁghter T-Shirt from me. Now the Russian volleyball team belongs to my crew! Together, we collected more than an hour of garbage and then played a round of volleyball. [...]"

NAIS returns to NEUROPUNK RECORDS with his LET’S ROCK EP, the latest in an explosive series of releases across the neurofunk scene’s top labels including Eatbrain, Bad Taste, and a prior release on NEUROPUNK RECORDS with his EP “Dirty Bounce”. A diverse display of NAIS’ boisterous sonic character, the LET’S ROCK EP sees NAIS continue to build his meteoric momentum with a further four uncompromising tracks.

LET’S ROCK opens with a track by the same name, within which NAIS warps a funk fueled introductory instrumental with an uproarious bassline that allows space for the samples swung snares to step underneath. VISIBLE TRIGGERS takes a similar approach to its bassline synthesis, but instead stretches it amidst a rapid percussive sequence of ringing metallic timbre. The initial dubby atmosphere of JNGL follows next, taking the source material of the genre as the inspiration for a uniquely technical set of sounds. The braggadocious bravado of BOSSIN then closes the EP, perhaps most emblematic of NAIS boisterous sound in it’s hyperenergetic & funky bassline flow.

With LET’S ROCK, NAIS returns to his NEUROPUNK RECORDS launchpad as he seeks to set out on a second sonic journey that sees him rise even further than the explosive success of his first.
