There are still first times happening for me in Europe, even after travelling and DJing the continent for almost 25 years now. But I have never ever made it to Cyprus before. So on March 24th it was my very first time on this beautiful island, and it could not have gone any better. The awesome crew of @technohabitsnicosia were such amazing hosts, real outstanding. And what a cool location in the middle of nowhere really. I felt like in the early days of raves. Not to mention the amazing crowd in the Camelot (yes, indeed it looked like a little old English castle). Cyprus, I feel a whole lot of love for all of you there. What an awesome event you put up, I cannot say enough how thankful I am that you invited me and I really hope to be back super soon. Maybe in the summer? So now I am happy to share the 3+ hour set I got to play there with all of you. Hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed playing it. It is filled with loads of upcoming and current CLR releases by the way. Try and spot them.

Following the sublime innovation of high profile dispatches from Michel De Hey, Pete Moss and label founder Josh Wink in the last few months, Ovum continue maximum momentum into the summer with an impeccable label debut from one of Portugal’s most consistent and influential techno producers: Frank Maurel.

With a discography that goes back to 98 and ranges from King Street to Konstrukt, his barbed, widescreen beats complement any dark room scenario or capacity. These crisp constructions are no exception as Maurel treats us to a tour of his darkest acid psyche…

‘Bad Thing’ casts its spells in that illusive creative chasm between techno and house as chunky, jacking beats, a palpitating bassline straight out of the Tresor playbook and iced-out toplines ensure its hypnotic allure. ‘Asteroid’ is a dizzying trip into the stars on a rocket powered by classic multi-layered hyper-fluctuating 303 and finally ‘My System’ closes on a straight techno tip where an offbeat bass tone creates latent funk and more waves of acid entwine and entangle.

Enduring, driving, tightly sprung and lean: This might be Frank Maurel’s Ovum debut but with sounds as timeless as these, it’s like he’s been on the label forever. Classic sinewy acid science like this never fails.

2020, a new decade Time for a little reflection, time for a spot of soul seeking, time for some personal contemplation. Or Acid Contemplation as Charlie Thorstenson likes to call it.

Continuing his elegant rise up the techno echelons, here we find the non-surfing Swede digging unfathomably deep in all possible directions on his spiritual stomping ground Ovum. It all kicks off with Acid Contemplation, an elephantine track that sets the broad field parameters thanks to its thundering kick/bass combo, subtle acid twangs and gentle piano breezes.

Its backed by two more equally forthright, widescreen messages: Distorted Chamber is a juggernaut design that captures the pure essence of techno that builds and builds until its very final throes. Unrelenting and ever-mutating with tightly weaved layers, this one is all about the momentum while the grand finale Trenger Dig is all about Charlies knack for intensity and drama. Gritty, pulsating and once again rising and rising until the very last moment, Trenger Dig is a certified siren of a tune, the type of which will work in any mix and guarantee elevation levels necessary for maximum reflection, soul seeking and of course contemplation.

He's back. Last spotted on Ovum asking, "Where Am I?" way back in 2003, French 303 maestro, Brique Rouge patron and all-round OG David Duriez makes a long overdue return to the acid mothership with two extreme slices of late night darkness.

"Plastic Tracks" is the pinnacle of David's plastic series over the years. The ultimate compound crusher; its venomous acid spikes and crushing kicks make it a behemoth of a session that can whip up any level of untold frenzy. "Crank" brings the chaos in a different way. Bubbling and grinding over a loose rolling almost tribal groove, over the course of almost nine minutes were sucked deep inside an acid black hole and lose all sense of gravity.

Addictive, intoxicating and too much fun mix. Welcome back David!
