Ovum’s 20th birthday celebrations gather pace as Josh Wink digs into the vaults for a very special piece of the label’s history, presenting three perfect reinterpretations of Wink’s hyperkinetic acid techno classic ‘Are You There’.

Wink explains the history and concept behind the track: “The original version was composed in 1994 - just after ‘Higher States’, ‘I am ready’ and ‘Don't laugh’ - and released in 1996, I can't believe it has been 20 years since it was written! I had a friend, in Cleveland Ohio, who knew I never answered my home phone. So, when he called my house, he believed I was there screening and listening to the calls on my answering machine. Hence, "Are you there". Which was actually taken from my answering machine mini cassette, with his blessing.

Ben Klock contacted us in regard to him using his own remix version for his fabric mix release. We gave him permission, as an exclusive to the mix, with the possibility for Ovum to release it at a later time. A while ago, we at Ovum were talking about releasing certain catalog legacy tracks for the 20 Years celebration, and ‘Are You There’ was one on the top of the list. We decided to release his remix on Ovum in 2014, which we’re very happy about as we are big fans of Ben.

There are ROD remixes by Benny Rodrigues and another great remix by Harry Romero. Both are talented passionate producers who contacted us to ask to remix the original. It's nice to be able to release music close to 20 years old that people are still influenced by. We will be re-releasing both the original and remix versions as part of the 20 years of Ovum celebration.” – Josh Wink

Ben Klock’s remix retains the clattering amen breaks of the original, which sits over a cavernous sub-bass undertow. Harry Romero reinterprets the song as a house groover, with a lo-fi 4x4 shuffle, groovy piano stabs and bass guitar loops peppered throughout. The ROD remix is dangerously stripped back, letting the vocal snippet take precedence against jacking handclaps and skittering hi-hats.

For the digital release, we have also gone back in and remastered all of the original classic mixes, giving them a fresh sound for 2014.  Go back and revisit some of these classic mixes, which still pack a huge punch today!

Model 500 - Starlight (Moritz Mix Aka Maurizio Remix 1995)

Following releases from Midland, Dusky, Bicep Leon Vynehall, Komon and Deetron, Aus continues its run of releases with Glaswegian, London-based producer Sei A stepping up to the helm once again, following up his well received 'Wants' EP in September.

'Make It Work' is a blend of muscular drums, pitched down vocals and hypnotic synths which pan across the record in on and off rhythms. What follows, 'I'll Take You There', is definitely from the same gene pool, with its pounding pulse and stark vocals, led this time, however, by an equally energetic midrange bass line.

Fresh from mixing the latest installment of the hugely respected DJ Kicks series on !k7 Breach adds his own unique twist to the package with an inspired remix of the title track, hollowing out the centre and building it up with patience on his more extended interpretation. 'Hing,' although only available on the digital release, is a hidden treasure; running on a slightly slower tempo, this track winds down the EP perfectly with its slurred and subaqueous sounds.

Monoloc - It's Mine

Markus Suckut has become one of Figure's key artists over the last few years. His early work on Figure SPC stood out as some of the young artist's strongest productions around, while his debut full length LP, 'DNA' released on Figure this May, saw a maturing producer proudly sticking to his talents. Those talents clearly lie in deadly, reduced basement techno, sub heavy, rough around the edges, yet highly accurate for the dancefloor. 
 
This meeting of minds then, is somewhat of a perfect match. Len Faki's renowned high-end production and impressive back-catalogue provide the rock-solid foundations for the 'Skulls' EP. Over 4 tracks and 2 pieces of vinyl, the pair go deep into their influences and come up with an advanced, designed and suitably seismic sound. 
 
From the reduced and spaced cuts like 'Skulls 1' & 'Skulls 3', the pair offer contrasting textures and rolling percussion amidst a remarkably weighty bass-end. Fizzing hats and tripping technobleeps then complement a snaking, tribalist vibe in 'Skulls 2' which also comes with a straight-up Dub version.

After the warm and beautiful indie leaning EP from Dead Heat, Life and Death steps back up to the plate with two fresh dancefloor killers found in Mind Against's new Avalon EP. 

With sounds that seem plucked from an early 80s children's filmstrip gone very wrong (or perhaps very very right) Mind Against weave a dark, inspired charge into the black of night with both sides of this stunning EP.

On the A side is Several Times, a techno gem that comes out of the gate at breakneck pace with solid drums, bass and a rhythmic synth pulse that evolves slowly and strongly until finally augmented by a main analog synth line that reaches over from the other side and grabs you directly by the ears. It's an evocative melody that keeps the listener on edge with tones that are fully present yet almost barely hold together, teetering just on the edge of falling apart but never quite falling away from just where they need to be. A techno themed soundtrack to a disturbing Groundhog Day of the faraway future.

Over on the B side is the EP's namesake with a simmering sound that makes reference to the ancient island home of legendary sorceress Morgan Le Fey, sister of the famous King Arthur and whose mystic ways were to blame for mirages seen by sailors long out at sea. Here again an analog synth casts its spell on the listener, framed by delayed chords and a foreboding low end growl that slowly tell the tale of Avalon. Managing the difficult task of painting a picture without form, Mind Against weave an emotional drama without words and yet their vocabulary of sound seems keenly up to the task. No easy feat but one this duo have proven again and again that they are more than able to accomplish.

Cleric hails from Manchester in the North of England and describes his precision designed, heavy techno tracks as a means to translate emotion to others; to transport his intuitive feel for timing, tension and sound engineering to listeners far and wide.

Over three tracks, Cleric's functional and tense take on the modern techno sound keeps things nicely restrained, loaded with kinetic energy and heavy potential for well-tuned sound systems. 'Pattern One', '…Two' and '…Three' each offer a different angle on a central theme, that revolves around sizable kick drums, crisp cutting hats and percussion, and smooth dub-themed synth elements that all dance in spacious unison. 

Len Faki also lends his hand to 'Pattern One', introducing a crafty breakdown to the proceedings and his trademark builds and cuts, completing this essential package.

Making their first appearance on the label, Venezuelan deep house masters Sergio Munoz and Israel Sunshine aka Fur Coat are the next to release on the mighty Hot Creations. Title track ‘There’s No Time’ sees the darker side of the talented duo for an epic experience on the dance floor with deep growling basslines complemented with powerful electronic keys and dramatic builds. On the B-side Hot Creations favourite wAFF delivers a stellar and storming ‘Warehouse Remix’ picking up the pace with added vocals and percussion, packed with all the sonic energy we have come to expect from the young producer. Last up the Fur Coat duo deliver another golden original. ‘Together’ takes it deeper once again with a rumbling bassline and hypnotic synths and keys flowing through the layers to stimulate the senses.

Fur Coat previously remixed Russ Yallop’s ‘The Crossroads’ followed by their debut EP ‘Space Ballad’, featuring an unforgettable edit by TEED. However it would be their release ‘You and I’ featuring vocals from Cari Golden that would put the name Fur Coat on the map. At the end of 2012 they released their huge debut album ‘Mind Over Matter’ on Crosstown Rebels, with further ventures on labels such as Bpitch, Rebellion, Southern Fried Records, Noir, Get Physical and My Favorite Robot.

wAFF has rapidly gone strength to strength in the past few years after being taken under the wing of Jamie Jones, Lee Foss and Richy Ahmed. First coming to everyone’s attention with the huge ‘Jo Johnson’ EP, wAFF has gone on to acquire a heavy touring schedule and his more recent ‘Puke It Up’ EP released on the label only cemented his career in the industry further. Alongside his home label wAFF has also been releasing and remixing for labels such as Cocoon Recordings, Resonance Recordings and Rinse.

The B-side of this humorously titled release is hands down one of my favourite tracks of all time, and definitely my favourite Levon Vincent creation. One of the few records that I can honestly say is well worth the high marketplace price, though I hope my copy gives me years of play! There's really no fitting description for this shifting chugger; it's a totally melodic and dubby slice of techno with a nice, subtle tinge of house-y-ness. It keeps going and going, with every element in its perfect place. Lots of reverb and warped sounds that build a series of layered loops from some ultimately quite simple components. For me that's the mark of perfection: a fugue-like cycle that plays on a perfect kick, bass drum, etc. And did I mention there are some VERY fat synth chords? Oh, and I just listened to it again and must add that there are some sweet pitched up lasers. I've always had a soft spot for the sound of lasers! Mmmmmm, Woman Is The Devil indeed.

Inmotion Music is thrilled to present to you Nacho Gonzalez aka Piek who falls pefectly into that motif, releasing a plethora of stellar releases on some of the biggest labels in the underground house music realm, from Diynamic, Paulatine, and Sphera to Brise Records and the Cray1 imprints. This small town spaniard definitely knows his way around the house groove, bringing you two brilliant originals in "Varanasi" and "Vous Etes Fou" upon which was a collaboration with fellow Spain-based confidant, Efron. These two stompers are injected with plentiful precessions, and funky woofing baselines sure to keep those feet shuffling. On remix assignments are two HUGELY supported and premiere producers.berlin based Alexkid who is fresh off his recent inclusion on the Desolat X-Sampler Purple also with signings on suc h labels as Freerange, Rekids, and NRK. Alexkid delivers true to form with a stellar remix already tried and tested by the likes of Spencer Parker and Tini. Accompanying him, remixing "Vous Etes Fou", is none other than the highly regarded painter turned producer, Clio, conveying his deep mood and after hour vibe consistent to his signature sound. Techno-style foundation rounded out by influences from Jazz, Dub and Hip Hop would best begin to start to describe the sound of this Berlin-based artist. Enjoy!

It has been rapid rise for Italian brothers Fabrizio & Matteo Floris. Producing as Mr. Bizz the duo's early releases for Frisbee Tracks and Muticolor Recording found good support, however it was their 2009 production 'Eternity' that really put them on map. Signed to Cocoon, it featured on the Ten Years Of Cocoon compilation mixed by Dubfire and Loco Dice and was a highlight of that summer season. 

Into 2010 and Mr. Bizz were in full flow, signing releases to Tuning Spork and Resopal Schallware and turning their remix talents on Hakan Lidbo. Since then its been a flurry of releases. Ep's for Octopus Recordings, Deeperfect and Material Series and remixes for the likes of Mauro Picotto, Hermanez, Pig&Dan, Stefano Noferini and Yello. 

The heavy beat patterns and sinister vocals have defined Mr. Bizz's original style and are to the fore here again on their SCI+TEC debut, 'Reversion EP'.
