Jonno Brien - Boogie Down

Commencing Ovum’s 20th birthday celebrations, Josh Wink digs into the vaults for a very special piece of the label’s history, presenting three perfect reinterpretations of Wink’s hyperkinetic acid techno classic ‘Are You There’.

 
Wink explains the history and concept behind the track: “The original version was composed in 1994 - just after ‘Higher States’, ‘I am ready’ and ‘Don't laugh’ - and released in 1996, I can't believe it has been 20 years since it was written! I had a friend, in Cleveland Ohio, who knew I never answered my home phone. So, when he called my house, he believed I was there screening and listening to the calls on my answering machine. Hence, "Are you there". Which was actually taken from my answering machine mini cassette, with his blessing.

 
Ben Klock contacted us in regard to him using his own remix version for his fabric mix release. We gave him permission, as an exclusive to the mix, with the possibility for Ovum to release it at a later time. A while ago, we at Ovum were talking about releasing certain catalog legacy tracks for the 20 Years celebration, and ‘Are You There’ was one on the top of the list. We decided to release his remix on Ovum in 2014, which we’re very happy about as we are big fans of Ben.

 
There are ROD remixes by Benny Rodrigues and another great remix by Harry Romero. Both are talented passionate producers who contacted us to ask to remix the original. It's nice to be able to release music close to 20 years old that people are still influenced by. We will be re-releasing both the original and remix versions as part of the 20 years of Ovum celebration.” – Josh Wink

 
Ben Klock’s remix retains the clattering amen breaks of the original, which sits over a cavernous sub-bass undertow. Harry Romero reinterprets the song as a house groover, with a lo-fi 4x4 shuffle, groovy piano stabs and bass guitar loops peppered throughout. The ROD remix is dangerously stripped back, letting the vocal snippet take precedence against jacking handclaps and skittering hi-hats.

Etruria Beat is pleased to present the first EP of the talented duo from Modena Toms Due. Already appeared with the track "Part Of It" and more recently with the remix of Bastinov - Ellipse which has been played everywhere around the globe, today they offer two original tracks with a defined and aggressive sound plus two huge remixes from Etruria’s family.. Get ready to blow up some dance floors!

The EP opens with the remix of the label-boss Luca Agnelli, who brings a very techno track, full Robert Hood style, with a distorted kick and a Detroit chord that makes the rhythm obsessive and powerful. 

The second track is the original "Fly over", built around the melody and a solar chord hooked to a powerful 909 groove . It will be a nice breath of fresh air for the darkest consoles. 

The B1 is the track from which the EP take his name, "The Bridge", is nothing but search for the essential. Very few sounds that will make the atmosphere dark, an incredibly present kick and some 909 distorted hi-hats that ensures a breathless pace, until the last second. 

Finally, the "House" reinterpretation from the foot of Mount Vesuvius of the talent Dast,  who comes up with his version , influenced by a synth full of atmosphere but time-pressing at the same time.. Get your smiles ready, package is served!

Frustration

Returning victorious to M-Plant after the Floorplan album and EP takeover, Robert Hood, whose work under his own name has continued to garner equal support with the ‘Paradygm Shift’ series for Dekmantel, brings the heat with this triple-tracker in May.

The original minimal techno master wastes no time with opener ‘Clocks’. There’s a sense of urgency as the track builds, looping into its crescendo with waves of staccato hi-hats. Tick tock, tick tock.

Over on the flipside there’s a familiarity in the opening chords of ‘Low Life’ that will resonate with fans of Hood’s work. Instantly recognisable, it’s stamped with his ability to bring funk and groove to the colder stomp of techno.

Final opus, ‘Go’ brings a spiralling samba tempo to the dancefloor. The punchy drumbeat is interwoven with sweeping cymbals for a highly effective infectiousness, like a call to arms, or better still, the Brazilian call to carnival.

The EP kicks off with Bakoutool, a dry and functional percussive tool track.

Glory is an oldschoolish chord-heavy trip through time and space.

Reverside is another functional affair, an energetic synth line leads the track, and classic 909 drums propel it forward.

Tribute To M. is a slightly cheeky nod to one of the innovators of our music.

Finally, 'All Possible' connects with Glory in its uplifting and chord-laden style, classic 90ies techno-house.

Employing his emotional, murky strand of darkened electronics, Prequel Tapes morphs ‘Eden’ into a shapeshifting industrial creature with a mind of its own. Conversely, Anastasia Kristensen looks towards glistening skies with a radiant fast techno spin of ‘Out Of Orbit’.

Last but not least, Alan Fitzpatrick’s take on ‘From Beyond’ is a pensive nod to the beauty and melancholy of classic rave culture.
