Qu'est-ce qui nous attend au bout du monde
dont on prétend qu'il n'est qu'un gouffre amer
et dans quoi se précipitent les ondes
et plongent en cataractes les mers ?
On dit qu'au creux des tourbillons qui grondent,
attendent là tout vaisseau qui se perd,
gueule grande ouverte, des monstres immondes.
On dit qu'au bout du monde, c'est l'enfer !
Mais moi, Amérigo, rêve à des plages
où vaquent des femmes à demi nues,
portant colliers de fleurs et coquillages,
dont la couleur de peau m'est inconnue.
Là-bas, elles dansent, pêchent ou nagent.
Leurs paniers sont remplis de fruits charnus.
J'entends leurs voix qui ne sont que ramage
en tendres mélopées monter aux nues.
Leurs yeux, de là-haut, comm' les astres veillent
qu'aucun abîm' n'avale mon bateau
m'interdisant la route des merveilles,
leurs mains alors arracheraient aux flots
