P a b l o presented me this ambient drone titled "lost souls" for me to experiment on. In Belgium we're facing our third covid lockdown in one year. Help organizations worldwide are reporting alarming numbers of domestic violence and abuse due to lockdown. Lost Souls immediately became Trapped Souls in my head. I tried to evoke such disturbing situations through sound. It was an emotional rollercoaster. Anyhow, this is the result.

Showcase: Vía de Acceso 12 @ Radio Ensayo (17.6.21)

It's a real pleasure for me to introduce this work, which has probably been the most interesting, complex and somehow challenging collaborative session I ever joined so far, at least in terms of rearrangement tasks.
It all started with an early version of a piece by The FURICO Music Team (@user-596493783) called "Mood Of Two" (https://soundcloud.com/user-596493783/double-beat-swing - feel free to take a look at the production notes as well, at https://furicomusicteam.blogspot.com/p/mood-of-two.html). We had been planning a collaboration for a while, so they sent me this groovy composition of theirs, both audio and midi files, allowing me the freedom to do whatever I wanted with them. 
On the one hand, I was intentioned to respect the original structure of the piece, and after listening to their own final version of it, released in late February 2021, I was literally blown out by all of the cool electro-psych features they'd added to the original tune, so my aim was delivering a rendition of that new vibe as well. On the other hand, I wanted to do it my own way, spicing it up with a typical Teth Sin flavour. 
First of all, I resampled the original drums tracks, trying to give them an acoustic feel. Then I replaced the bassline with my own, somehow developing it with a fair amount of variations; I overdubbed a couple of electric guitar tracks, and an electric piano part.
It was about time to add vocals as well, so I asked my friend Stonerjazz (@user-911083679) if he wanted to join in, remembering him being a big fan of The FURICO Music Team too. He enthusiastically accepted, as I'd expected, and a few days later he sent me a recording of him singing one of his amazing poems on the pre-existing, swingy backing track. He's recently released a ballad version of these lyrics (at https://soundcloud.com/user-911083679/beloved-sisters-of-the-storm), which is of course totally different and still very cool. 
I adapted his vocals stem on the sections where I wanted the singing to appear, and I finally added to most of the tracks a few weird, stuttering effects. This final sound design stage was crucial in order to deliver the kind of sound I was looking for. My aim was distilling a proper mixture of our combined styles, and I think my efforts paid off. Regardless of the aesthetic value of this work, it has been an extremely interesting experience for us, we all had fun and we're satisfied with it. 
I'd like to conclude by quoting Stonerjazz's first reaction when he listened to the final mix: "Well, Mick... What can I say about this elixir...?"

'Trojan Love' plays tricks on your mind.

Underground-feel meets organic sounds in the club mix version of Trojan Love, the latest collaboration of Definition and Natascha Polké. The track is highly nuanced from start to finish. Light, understated synth patterns keep teasing and rising, every now and then slipping through a filter to gain prominence. A throbbing bassline takes up all the space. Together with driving percussion it builds endlessly, until it’s cut by uncompromising silence - only pierced by the disarming voice of Natascha Polké. (When the weighty bass rolls back in, total ecstasy). Somehow this track manages to increase in its intensity again and again, we rise and fall, led by melodious lines played on a dulcimer and a punchy kick that gives the track its potency'

Mindfully placed string elements bring in additional layers of ethereal vibes in the sunset mix of Trojan Love. Haunting, yet somehow light and playful they marry melancholy with humble attention to detail and feather-light percussion. Melodic dulcimer patterns flow like the stream of a waterfall and take over our moving bodies like a rolling bliss. Dream-like interludes let us catch our breaths just long enough to submerge anew. Natascha Polké has managed to create a consistency in the remarkable wide variety of this track that makes it the perfect place to get lost in comfortably — it feels like watching the sun rise and set over and over again.

Tim Engelhardt’s remix of Trojan Love, the latest collaboration between Definition and Natascha Polké, is a skilful slow-burner pairing an ever-present melancholic atmosphere with organic programming. The producer weaves subtly disorientating vocal effects into harmonic fluidity with ease, underpinning it all with a steady beat that could carry us to the end of time. Engelhardt’s manipulation of space is unparalleled. Racing synths and carefully placed melodic fragments take us on a deep journey, floating yet minimal, dark yet comforting — and wistful throughout.

I was honored when https://soundcloud.com/graphicsontelevisions asked me to remake ‘Tattlesnakes’ from their fantastic album ‘Pun’. Maybe it’s the wildest one, unpredictable but coherent, it inspired me immediately !!

I've remixed to my taste their original studio stems (drums & keyboards), adding my own vocals, guitars & more... hard recommendation of headphones again !!

Lyrics are from another of my ancient poems, where I played with oxytone & eproparoxytone rhymes (translated below but with lost effect in English).
