PREMIERE: UNAI - Ritual [SOL017]

It was Memorial Day Weekend 2016, and the sun shined bright over the Detroit River. Pontchartrain stepped up to the decks at the Red Bull stage at Movement Electronic Music Festival donning his infamous "Detroit vs. Itself" t-shirt. His first song through the Rane rotary mixer was a dubplate made specifically for his set: “Afterlife”. It’s a brilliantly executed daytime disco rework that warrants the praise of summer anthem that it’s earning. 

On the flip is “Pool”, an equally sunny slomo beatdown rework from Blair French. It's a delightful blend of cerebral and soulful, and is finally getting a release after being originally championed by Peter Croce on his Le Mellotron Paris set back in early 2018. 

This 7" is pressed heavy and cut loud at 33.3 RPM with a normal non-dinked hole.

The sounds of Norway are back with us as Karl Fraunhofer (now going under Karl F) drops an E.P. of insane sounds...if you was after something that ticks the 'acid house-warehouse rave-arcade machine soundtrack' boxes then this is the E.P. you've been looking for.

Title track Altered Beats is one of the most unique things we've ever heard, pumping, broken beat, acid rave style vibes leads into a monster chug drop with insane synth work throughout.

Future Express retains the uniqueness and goes straight in for the italo/cosmic vibe with a stunning breakdown that is straight out of Streets Of Rage but with added whallop & thud...this has got to be heard to be believed.

Timothy Clerking teams up with Massey to deliver a warp factor peak time acid slammer rework of Altered Beats whilst Karl's fellow country men Rolf Royce & Oddvar Bråk tackle Future Express and drizzle it in that cool unique Norwegian charm with the result being an almost hi-nrg Norwegian Disco makeover...mega!

Back at the start of lockdown, label boss Man Power set the challenge to remix a track he created that day in 2 hours.

The idea behind the challenge being to set yourself limitations as a producer - be that time, or only using certain software/equipment - and to finish the arrangement completely.

The amount of stellar remixes we received was astounding and hence we've arrived at this point, a compilation of all those amazing remixes being released on the label with all profits going to NHS Charities Together.

Man Power - Its Not A Competition (Vhyce Remix)

“(…) ALFOS pilot, Sean Johnston, has a ton of music to about to land. The most balearic of which is an E.P. for Le Temps Perdu. Released under the moniker A Mountain Of Rimowa** the record packages 4 originals, plus a remix by the NYC team of Justin Strauss and Max Pask. Each of the tracks bears a recognizable sample, or recreation there of, spanning the genres of soul, post-punk, and house. But these aren’t edits, or even “radical reinterpretations”. More affectionate nods. Since the borrowed bits aren’t core to the tunes. They aren’t the hooks. More an anchor, a leaping-off point. Sometimes only really evident in the intros and outros. Perhaps deliberately acknowledging the past while reaching for, and returning from, the future. No More takes a line from a soulful chart hit and kinda uses its sentiment – of love and understanding, an end to all wars – as its stance. Re-contextualizing these Shoom favourites in a purely electronic setting. Raining down racing arpeggios and anthem-ic piano. The production betraying its author`s love of Italo and synth pop. Joker replays a section of treated post-punk guitar / ambient isolationist dub. Using it to build a buzzing forceful throb around a skipping motorik rhythm, bleeps and a New Order-esque b-line. Brothers And Sisters In The West on the other hand bases its bass riff on that of an instantly recognizable 80s house classic. The new beat / EBM-flavoured Brothers And Sisters In The East is punk funk, whose bottom-end is hulking, muscular, Paul Simonon-like, while its guitars chop and change between tense and nervous Psycho Killer strum, and angular Mick Jones London Calling shapes. The beat like a machined Barkays` break. Pounding, but not pulverizing. Its echoed rimshots eventually escalating into an intense saber rattle.

**A Mountain Of Rimowa is a reference to the life of the “jetset” DJ, and high-end luggage. It is not – as I imagined – some occult Lovecraftian location. Then again, maybe it is.”

A.M.O.R. - No More (Each Other Mix)

We’re not saying that Club Tularosa are the golden boys of Me Me Me, but they’re the only act who got booked to DJ at both label owner Man Power’s wedding and his 40th Birthday party.

Based in Los Angeles, Lionel and Ray have honed an infectious and party-starting sound that takes in serious references like New Wave, Post Punk, and the 80s proto-house synth experiments of Anne Clarke, Yazoo, and Depeche Mode, but never makes the mistake of taking them too seriously. As skilled in the studio as they are in the booth, Pyramids is rather unbelievably only the second ever EP by the duo, after releasing a slew of incredibly well-loved remixes in the 12 months since their debut release on Me Me Me last year, which saw the tracks Starlight Ceremony and Kenji both become bona fide club hits and a firm favorite of distinct DJs such as HAAi, Keinemusic, and CC Disco.

Flash Atkins has got The In Crowd off the back catalogue shelf, dusted it off and passed it on to some of his favourite producers for a re-rub.

Originally released on one of Paper's sister labels We Are Woodville, The In Crowd takes a Roxy Music sample and uses it as the bedrock for a peak time cosmic disco banger. Fully road tested on boat parties in Croatia, the breakdown has been certified as highly flammable.

Man about town and son of Bolton, Chris Massey flexes his late night production muscles. The extended sample rides rock solid beats and squelchy bass as the track locks in for serious dancefloor business.

From Beyond keeps the big room cosmic vibe with added guitar, acid and lots of reverb. It is warehouse disco house at its finest.

The Soundersons keep the original intact but pitches it down and adds some disco swing. It comes off like chopped and screwed, drugged up disco for those moments when things get weird.
