Patrick Siech

After the success of the first A-sides compilation in 2012, Adam Beyer has decided its time to release another. With Adam’s stature steadily growing as one of the leading talents in the Techno scene and the rise of Drumcode, the standard of demo’s that have been sent to Adam have been top notch. Adam has now decided to release two compilations with 10 tracks each, consisting of tracks that Adam has tried and tested. There are also new artists that have been invited to release on Drumcode for this compilation and others who are a staple in Drumcode’s core family. Combining both old and new talents Drumcode have come up with something unique and distinctive to make this two-part compilation something extra special.

He describes his style as “techno adventures between jungle and space.” We definitely agree on that one. We are glad to welcome Patrick Siech for our 59th podcast. It is not a coincidence we yet again welcome a Swedish grandmaster. It is simply a fact that Sweden is blessed with great producers and dj’s. During the last years Patrick has released his music on Drumcode, Parabel, Break New Soil, Phobiq , MB Elektroniks and Octopus Music. For this occasion, our residents Thomas Vrijhof and STØRM have set up a few questions for Patrick. Read below his answers.
C: It’s a pleasure having you on the show Patrick. We read somewhere that you are a well-known promoter in Sweden. Are you still active as a promoter now-a-days ?
P: I started out DJing at the late 90s, and at some point me and a couple of friends started throwing parties because there were not many good clubs to play at in my home town;  a student city called Lund, in the south. I was really lucky that the nights became so popular, because no clubs played techno here back then. I haven’t been promoting nights since 2008 or so. You have a thousand worries concerning the club, not even to mention the financial part. 

C: As a DJ/promoter you’ve probably experienced many club nights. What would be the perfect night for you as a dj? What artists would be on the bill and etc? 
P: The gig that i remember as my best so far was probably when playing Sunday evening at the Berghain main floor, where everyone on the floor is completely susceptible to every little move you make as a selector. The vibe of that place just gives back so much more energy than you put in. And that’s a place where you pretty much give it all :) This is probably why DJs there can keep up the 10-12hr closing sets. It’s a very special feeling of energy, unity, and responsibility to the ravers, that is unique to that DJ booth. It was actually my birthday also, so it’s probably the closest to a perfect gig I’ve had so far.
The question about the perfect night is one that i think about often. There’s a lot of things that has to come together. But there is one main thing I try to think about regarding the DJ: Some DJs has got the ability to bring out a very primal tribal behaviour in the crowd. They’re able to suck you in, hypnotize and unite all the individuals in the dance floor into one single collective mind, giving everyone on the floor the feeling that they’re experiencing a very special unity through the music. This is the kind of DJing that inspires me. 
The latest set like this i experienced was Donato Dozzy at Breakfast Club on ADE, he always captures the ravers in a very special way. He would probably be on my bill. On the top of my head Joel Mull always does it as well, Omar S, Efdemin, Radio Slave and Sebastian Mullaert from Minilogue, they all got the unite-the-ravers-thing going.

C: What would be the most extra-ordinary or weird situation you have ever experienced as a DJ? 
P: Around 6-7 years ago I still played control vinyls with my computer. A small club gig, and it wasn’t very busy, but suddenly when I looked away and talked to a friend my laptop was hijacked by a drunk girl who tried to open my Spotify…  Pretty much the track-request-clubber taken to its extreme. This was the last time i ever took my computer on stage.

C:We’ve noticed some unreleased material of you have been used in some mixes of fellow dj’s, any particular releases we should look out for? 
P: I’ve got a new one with Sebastian Mullaert coming out soon., it will be vinyl only. And I have tons of stuff that I’m just sitting on myself at the moment, thinking about what to do with. So when you hear them played, it’s normally only by really close friends who I’ve sent the tracks to for feedback.

The atmospheric EP is enriched with gritty reverbs and a deep kick drum and the slow, deep crescendos in each track create an intense sound. Fabrizio Lapiana is a well-known fixture on the contemporary Italian techno scene. His musical career started in his hometown Rome where he began collecting vinyl and DJ’ing in the early 90’s. 

After being mainly active on the local scene, Fabrizio in 2008 started producing and founded his own imprint, the well renowned Attic Music. The label quickly expanded from hosting just Fabrizio’s work into also releasing other artists fitting his personal definition of techno. To date Fabrizio has over two handfuls of releases, Attic Music serves as home to some of these, but also other respected labels such as ARTS, Figure Jams and M_Rec Ltd to mention a few. His productions are often dark and hypnotic, yet at times they have brighter melodious elements, with each of these components smoothly entering as the tracks unfold.

However playing records to a live audience is still his favourite element. Fabrizio has honed and perfected his deejaying skills for over two decades, therefore being famous for his immaculate mixing technique. To create the setting he prefers, his sets travel from deeper to harder techno, darker pieces are introduced to more melodic ones and acid or old school gems get updated with new unheard material – these are some of the key ingredients for Fabrizio while creating an intimate journey for the listener. 

Lapiana’s latest achievement as a composer is his debut album “Intraverso” released in February 2018. With this collection of nine songs the artist departs from his previously dancefloor-focused work into something new and far more personal than where he has ever been before. The album shows slower, down-tempo, ambient influenced and more thoughtful compositions, unraveling light, darkness, happiness and sadness. “Intraverso” reveals an artist shedding another layer of himself, showing a softer more vulnerable side to the world.

Traversable Message approach in No Way Records with a dark and uncompromising techno ep. Surface is a hypnotic track mowed by a metallic and sharp synth, while in Break through noise meteorites insinuate themselves on a monolithic rhythm. In Emerge the atmosphere becomes more rarefied, while maintaining a precise and pressing rhythmic structure. This track is entrusted to the Sicarius Hahni remix, which maintains the same energy of the original drum machine by wrapping it in a dense and impenetrable nebula. Aleja Sanchez, leading artist of the Colombian techno scene, takes care of the first track of the ep, Surface, transforming the original into a beam of protons launched at high speed.

PREMIERE : Traversable Message - Surface (Aleja Sanchez Remix) [No Way Records]

P4PS is the stage name of Lorenzo Papes. He was born in the beautiful Belluno in Italy.
In May 2019 he released his first ep with Spazio Speziale. The tracks are characterized by dark and deep sounds and had support by artists such as Richie Hawtin, Ilario Alicante, Arnaud Le Texier, Takaaki Itoh, Paco Osuna, A Thousand Details and many others. The EP also managed to a 17th place in the Beatport Techno Top 100 Releases ranking. The track ”Midriasi” even reached the third place as best techno track in May 2019.
2020 will be an exciting year for P4PS as well. P4PS created his new imprint, 92u. Orbital, the first ep of the label, has distinct energetic and mental sonorities and it has already been supported by big names in the techno scene.
P4PS was very happy to create an exclusive set for us. And we are very happy to have him in the show.

The third Various Artists release on Codec Recordings is a strict blend of groovy, hypnotic, and effective techno.
Rising producer Daniel Rifaterra opens the V/A with Lantrua, a chilled out, atmospheric piece with a strong kick drum. With releases on labels such as Revolution and Truncate, he is definitely an artist to be on the watch for.
Serbian based David Mijatovic brings a high tempo, hypnotic loop and a relentless percussion workout to accompany it.
Next is Ekkor, an Estonia based artist who’s seen releases on labels such as Aesir and Smashead records. He delivers a driving and minimal, yet groovy tune.
Slono, who recently debuted his first EP, starts the second half strong with abstract, hypnotic loops and deep basslines. Hippocampal Functions is a force to be reckoned with!
Argentinian producers Stier and Juan Castillo team up to deliver A01, a percussive based track with many layers and textures. A highly effective tool for the dance floors!
Thomas Hostler, better known by his main alias “Space (GR)” showcases a computerized, hypnotic groove with many different elements blending into one another.
Unfit ends the compilation with Denebola, a heavily rhythmic tune layered with polymeters and ambience to create a mesmerizing soundscape.
