Producer, DJ, promoter, and @soundsofvala label head, @soundsofkaspiann's work straddles a range of paces and moods, always with an eye toward the innovative. With a lower-tempo release due early next year on an undisclosed label, Kaspiann's more recent sonic explorations wade into swampy techno with psychedelic inflections.

In Patterns of Perception 117, Kaspiann pulls you into the flow through these murky sounds that dips and stomps along, with a selection of unreleased tracks from both his and his friends' studios, along with a handful of carefully unearthed gems.

Patterns of Perception 117 - Kaspiann

Known for her hypnotic dives to the psychedelic reaches of deep techno, London-based @freyacaldwell signature style emphasises meticulous sound design and the incorporation of lush and evocative textures. 

Having graced the stages of renowned venues and festivals throughout Europe, she has appeared at prestigious locations such as Amsterdam's De School, the Positive Education Festival, and London's own Village Underground.

Faery's Patterns of Perception 118 circles around echoes, resonances and hauntings, shifting between shadowy low-ends and moments of ecstatic crescendo. Encapsulating the tension and drama held in dnb's darker edges, the mix also weaves in touches of eerie contemporary classical-esque ambient.

Patterns of Perception 118 - Faery

Hailing from Amsterdam and with De School as his homebase, @nawazworldwide’s sound is always evolving, sliding deftly from wormhole techno to fast rhythms and glitchy electronics.

His selections on this Patterns of Perception 119 melt together while also reinforcing each other, each transition subtler than the last, sometimes even employing his own tailor-made tools and tracks for the purpose.

Beginning from a visual image, this mix blends diverse rhythms and atmospheres, offering a story line from which the listener can create their own narrative, their own image, free of imposition.

Patterns of Perception 119 - Nawaz

Marking the culmination of 2023, our final mix features the debut release from one of our own, @zilkamarie. As the driving force behind comms within our collective, Zilka's music inspiration is drawn from the diverse array of artists she collaborates with.

Recorded live at Jacopo (@severja) and Fred’s (@fred-czital) Hitze party back in July, the set follows on from a daytime open air while also opening the after party. Progressing from wet, spacious ambient sounds to dubby, irresistible beats, Patterns of Perception 120 captures and plays with quintessential afterhours vibes.

Hailing from Germany and now based in Portugal, @vril_01 has in recent years been quietly producing and performing some truly extraordinary electronic music. Going from strength to strength, he takes dancefloors on vivid, compelling journeys across Europe and beyond.

Patterns of Perception 121 takes us back to a very special live ambient set .VRIL performed at @nachtdigital MINT 2019, an immersive hour of lucid textures and swelling intensity.

Steve is a Berlin based DJ who cut his teeth in the house-fuelled backrooms of Canberra, Australia. Since discovering techno in a Sydney warehouse, his passion has taken him first to Helsinki and then onto Berlin where driving, atmospheric soundscapes now dominate his sets.

A founding member of Patterns of Perception, we are proud to have Steve kick off our mix series with an hour of deep techno that strikes the perfect balance between eclecticism and dancefloor functionality.

Patterns of Perception 01 - Steve Duncan

For the fourth edition of our mix series, we’ve asked Swedish producer and in-demand DJ Josefine Hellström Hansson to showcase her take on techno and house. The result is an hour long affair of deep and groovy cuts that perfectly blurs the line between the genres. 

Josefine is a classically trained pianist from Malmö, Sweden, who first discovered techno during one of many trips to Berlin. She has since established herself as a staple in her hometown’s major clubs and regularly plays at the famous Culture Box in Copenhagen. Josefine recently released her first solo EP Water Cave on Heartbreak Records, which has already received excellent reviews and playtime from big names like La Fleur and Âme. The title track of the EP is also featured in this mix.

Patterns of Perception 04 - Josefine Hellström Hansson

The fifth Patterns of Perception mix is a deep and driving techno affair by Ascorbite.  

Residing in the south of Sweden, Ascorbite has since his debut release in 2014 kept himself busy with producing and DJing as well as taking care of his own label, Corseque Records. The first Corseque EP called 'Subarctic' received excellent feedback and playtime from artists like Stephanie Sykes, Laurent Garnier, Andreas Tilliander and Inter Gritty when it came out late 2015. In a few months the label's second 12” drops, but you can already hear two of the tracks in this mix.

Patterns of Perception 07 - natural/electronic.system.

As both a DJ and producer, @refracted-music is coming into his own. The past year has seen him release the lush Through the Spirit Realm LP on @silent-season, secure slots on the summer festival circuit and hit the studio to work on a host of new productions, to be released on his own Mind Express label and elsewhere. His career has taken him from his hometown of Majorca to Berlin, a city which has allowed him to pursue music more actively and to carve out a space of his own within the techno scene.

Refracted took the headline shift at the September edition of Patterns of Perception, treating us to three hours of intense, intelligent techno which weaved masterfully between various tones, textures and emotions. To help us relive the night, we are happy to present an hour-long recording of his set.

@hydrangeamusic ’s life as a producer and DJ began relatively recently, when in 2014 she began expressing the quietness, wonder and intensity of nature in techno. For this prodigious French talent, creating and selecting music is an act of entering a deeper dimension, both transcendent and grounded in the hypnotic beauty of the natural world.

As a producer, she has released her own productions – which are lucid, mesmerising, arresting – on @annulled_music, @two-two-records, and @silent-season.

As a DJ, she is equally inspired by the dancefloors she plays to across Europe as by the nature around her home. She describes this mix for Patterns of Perception as a musical trip for one of her walks in the forest, creating an inner journey while being connected with the surroundings.

Despite it technically being mid-summer in June (not August), this Garden was a belter.  There was a RiteTrax festival on at the Bolehills during the day and when that finished the hordes descended on the Hallamshire making it one of the busiest yet.  I had an early evening set and played some deep Techno with a splash of trance at the end, enjoy!

EN: Piotr Figiel - music producer, live performer and DJ from Krakow. Editor of the "Essentia Electronica" - program at Off Radio Krakow, in which he often hosts Us. In his work, he is focuses on sounds of techno and IDM. For us, he recorded a DJ set filled with melodic and minimal trax. In the evenings he likes to read a good book while listening to Moderat.

For the seventh episode of TRANSIENCE on Cashmere Radio, we had the pleasure of having @andreasmaan and @imhysteria representing @patternsofperception, responding to the TRANSIENCE concept.

Patterns of Perception is a regular club night held at OHM, Berlin as well as a podcast series, providing a platform for artists to experiment and explore the depths of ambient and techno. Patterns of Perception embodies experimental textures and deep atmospheric sounds, inspired by the dissonance between the natural and the industrial. The residents are Kim Bergstrand, Hysteria, Andreas Maan & Steve Duncan. 

It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing to fit the patriarchal neoliberalist mould we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. We discover that the stability we were instructed to obtain whether it be financial, political or ecological, is fleeting, if at all. The resulting anxiety is an instrument of neoliberalism that prevents many of us from being able to raise consciousness of the structural injustices that alienate us.

In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Barad teaches us that the world is a dynamic process of intra-activity and materialisation, an ongoing ebb and flow of agency. The Buddhist Law of Impermanence proves that nothing in this world is eternal. Regardless of ones point of reference we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

We select artists whose music we feel has the potential to offer relief from these anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate modes of existence that reject hetero- patriarchal systems of oppression.

TRANSIENCE #07 with Patterns of Perception

Sydney born and now Berlin based, Hysteria is a product of his surroundings. Alongside friends and resident DJs, he co-created Patterns of Perception in 2016. Through their carefully curated parties at OHM Berlin, About Blank and the mix series, the platform has established itself as a destination for a more contemporary approach to techno.

As a creative director in his day to day, he always has an eye on aesthetics and narratives, a skill he uses to craft sets to always gets the dance floor moving at any time of night or day. He would describe his sound as deep groovy cosmic vibes.

This set was recorded at the Patterns of Perception Three Year party at About Blank, Berlin.

Acid Camp Vol. 103 — Hysteria

Massimiliano Pagliara is a longstanding figurehead amidst Berlin electronic music culture. He has worked tirelessly across many years to establish himself as one of the most innovative figures in house and techno having been a resident at Panorama Bar for a significant period of time. As a producer he has released music on the likes of Live at Robert Johnson, Meakusma, Ostgut Ton, Cocktail d'Amore and more. 

He has also recently launched his own record label in the form of Funnuvojere Records, an imprint which has risen in prominence and looks set to blossom and grow across the coming years with a hell of a lot of releases lurking just around the corner. 

We invited him to talk about it and deliver a mix which he does so in fine form.
