Aaron J ( @arn_j ) is a Boston based DJ and label head, running the @sure_thing imprint. The talented DJ has become known through Sure Thing's exciting bill of events, mixes & releases, with an unwaveringly genuine commitment to music and the bright community that surrounds it in the US and abroad. 

As a DJ, Aaron has become known for his taste for deep & dark, yet somehow always whimsical and warm music, having pulled together beautiful musical narratives for a range of notable mix series - this mix is no exception. I'm so happy to have him as part of the series - and can't wait to meet someday in the (hopefully) not too distant future on a dance floor :-)

We have been eagerly anticipating the release of this podcast for quite some time. London-based Faery is a friend of Above Below, and we were blown away by her set at The Beacon stage, which marked the closing of Above Below 2022. After a dry weekend, the rain poured, forging the perfect environment for the psychedelic techno on display; it was as if Faery herself summoned the downpour.

Once again demonstrating her capacity to hypnotize, Faery has recorded a soundtrack for swamp-dwellers and forest-inhabitants alike. A transfixing hour of contagious groove and otherworldly sounds.

This set was recorded in the National Park of Circeo on the 24.8.22 a few meters away from the Tyrrhenian Sea. There were 60 people audience lying on the sand, a few candles and a 4+1 Turbosound system.
I played my own productions including a few unreleased tunes.

Beautiful offering for #116 from the depths of France, Javier Salazar (@salazarconnect). I originally discovered their music via a beautiful set at the @monument-podcast festival afterparty on a beautiful farm in Norway. I was completely entranced by their percussive, groovy style. 

Founders of @rdgtribe, they recently put out a beautiful release on the output - somehow both soothing and driving. This mix is a beautiful continuation of that style. Relaxing, hypnotic and bouncy all at once.

A lush current of kinetic energy pulsates underneath you, enveloping you until you forget your body has edges. Such is the sensation one gets when listening to our next guest, Sunju Hargun. Based out of Bangkok, he spends his time DJing and co-running the imprint Siamese Twins Records, which is focused on exposing upcoming talent from Asia and acts as a platform for exploring everything from ceremonial chants to Bollywood-inspired acid. 

As a selector and curator, Sunju's inexplicable ability to meld cultures, rhythms, and timbres has earned him a respected reputation at home and abroad. In fact, it was at their gig together in Leipzig at Institut für Zukunft that Unrush founder Mareena and him realized they were both fans of each other. In this spirit of musically-bonded friendships, it was only natural to have him contribute to the series. Let yourself dissipate into the mist with this ambient masterclass from Sunju Hargun.

The recording of my set at Paral·lel Festival 2022 🌲⛰🧡 @parallelfestival

I was on 12.30-14.30 on Saturday afternoon. When I started playing, grey hazy clouds were still drifting across the panorama from Friday night’s storm, and by the end of my set, the sun was shining down on all of us.

This set meant a great deal to me, and being gifted the task of drifting from ambient expansion into trippy rhythms, coaxing everyone up off the floor and into movement, was such a dream.

With a style forged in the ’90s Midwest rave scene, Patrick Russell(@ptrckrssll)'s Detroit-bred origins are still very much on show today. Now based in New York, he has found a harmony between retaining his acid-driven musical influences and broadening his palette towards the deeper and more psychedelic. A @thebunkerny resident and Labyrinth (@mindgameslaby) Festival regular, and still a key figure of Detroit’s famed No Way Back parties, Patrick has gained what borders on legendary status within the international electronic music community through a combination of integrity, hard work and uncompromising ability to weave storytelling into his work as both DJ and producer. 

Like many artists, his recent selections have ventured away from the dance floor – with the COVID era offering a freedom of exploration that’s on full show in his Patterns of Perception 76. Of the mix, Patrick says: “For some time now, I’ve been sitting on a number of tracks around the 75/150 BPM axis that I’ve been dying to play, and wanted to do so without venturing into full-on techno or electro. This seemed like the right opportunity to present them, and also throw in a few curve balls while I was at it. Challenge accepted.”
