Industrial percussion, broken beat and glacial synthesisers are soaking you right into the eye of the storm. A variety of drums combined with African chants are another introduction of a new whirly roundabout. Fast and furious melodies are evolving into a mind-bending techno track, ready to hypnotise and sweep you of your feet in Mukuna’s twister. A refreshing blend of dancehall influenced tracks with jacking house and rhythmic noice keeps the mix interesting till the very last second until the storm settles. Enjoy flying!

GiGi FM is a trained dancer, which gives her a deeper insight into the intrinsic relationship between music and bodily movement. You can read a lot more about her philosophy and approach in the interview below, but you don't even need to know about it to hear this in her RA Podcast—a collection of swirling deep techno that rivals anything made by the usual cohort of "hypnotic" techno heads.

Looking at the tracklist doesn't really do it justice, but the names involved give you an idea of what to expect: Varuna, ASC, Donato Dozzy, The Orb, Sunju Hargun. This is techno that ripples rather than bludgeons, that moves with an ethereal grace, where tracks bleed into one another beautifully, with a few surprises, too. While you're here, you should check out her Magnetite EP for Bambounou's label Bambe, already one of the young year's most bewitching techno records. But if this is your introduction, then turn off the lights, light a candle or some palo santo, and sink into two hours of your new favorite techno DJ.

Cutting his teeth holding down a six year residency at the legendary Shine in Belfast, Cromby has been on a steady rise since his production debut in 2012. Following up with acclaimed releases on Rekids, Feel My Bicep and Unknown To The Unknown, 2020 marked the next chapter in Cromby’s career with the launch of his own imprint, Potency. Now residing in Berlin, Cromby is a regular at coveted strongholds,  Berghain / Panorama Bar, The Warehouse Project and fabric to name a few.

It’s always exciting when a DJ rips up the rulebook. Emerging from the Copenhagen underground is Prom Night, real name Shaq. He’s been touted as a bit of an upcoming gem as he blurs the lines between sleazy disco cuts and chuggers, italo house, afro-house and funk and beyond.

Originally from Aarhus he first began DJ’ing at just nine years old and describes his sound as being heavily influenced by 80’s pop culture hence the name. He reflects on his roots and recent embarkment into the world of music production:
 
“A lot of my productions are inspired by/ centered around a fusion of 70’s and 80’s Disco combined with modern and contemporary styles of House music.”

When we invited him to record this mixtape we weren’t entirely sure what we were going to get. What we’ve ended up is a spectacular showcase of Prom Night’s ability as a selector capable of switching quickly between genres and pushing the limitations. This one is a fun filled affair perfect for the weekend…

With recent releases on Love Above Records & Unrestricted Purpose, and a  recent bangin mix for local series @neurocrankk, priya is one to watch. With a knack for deep, trance-tinged and bangin tunes, they are quickly making a name for themselves in the local scene. So grateful they could be a part of the series!

Altjira (@altjiramara), the new project of Netherlands-born, Berlin-based Marc Leerink, represents the eternal, the uncreated, a being without beginning.

Inspired by First Nations’ (Australia) Dreamtime and glimpses into Marc’s own lucid dreams, the selection glides effortlessly through deep, radiant waters, weaving an impressive palette of genres and sounds into a whole that is glitchy, atmospheric, and esoteric yet, somehow, superbly unified and hopeful.

With new releases on the horizon, including on @spekkiwebu's imprint @mirrorzone, Altjira is a bold new manifestation of a most fascinating artist entering an exciting, ascendant phase, a moment captured exquisitely by Patterns of Perception 97.

Producer, DJ, promoter, and @soundsofvala label head, @soundsofkaspiann's work straddles a range of paces and moods, always with an eye toward the innovative. With a lower-tempo release due early next year on an undisclosed label, Kaspiann's more recent sonic explorations wade into swampy techno with psychedelic inflections.

In Patterns of Perception 117, Kaspiann pulls you into the flow through these murky sounds that dips and stomps along, with a selection of unreleased tracks from both his and his friends' studios, along with a handful of carefully unearthed gems.

Known for her hypnotic dives to the psychedelic reaches of deep techno, London-based @freyacaldwell signature style emphasises meticulous sound design and the incorporation of lush and evocative textures. 

Having graced the stages of renowned venues and festivals throughout Europe, she has appeared at prestigious locations such as Amsterdam's De School, the Positive Education Festival, and London's own Village Underground.

Faery's Patterns of Perception 118 circles around echoes, resonances and hauntings, shifting between shadowy low-ends and moments of ecstatic crescendo. Encapsulating the tension and drama held in dnb's darker edges, the mix also weaves in touches of eerie contemporary classical-esque ambient.

Hailing from Amsterdam and with De School as his homebase, @nawazworldwide’s sound is always evolving, sliding deftly from wormhole techno to fast rhythms and glitchy electronics.

His selections on this Patterns of Perception 119 melt together while also reinforcing each other, each transition subtler than the last, sometimes even employing his own tailor-made tools and tracks for the purpose.

Beginning from a visual image, this mix blends diverse rhythms and atmospheres, offering a story line from which the listener can create their own narrative, their own image, free of imposition.

Marking the culmination of 2023, our final mix features the debut release from one of our own, @zilkamarie. As the driving force behind comms within our collective, Zilka's music inspiration is drawn from the diverse array of artists she collaborates with.

Recorded live at Jacopo (@severja) and Fred’s (@fred-czital) Hitze party back in July, the set follows on from a daytime open air while also opening the after party. Progressing from wet, spacious ambient sounds to dubby, irresistible beats, Patterns of Perception 120 captures and plays with quintessential afterhours vibes.

Ambient is about cutting edge, flat structures, encompassing structures, nuturing structures.  Ambient culture is about developing what’s within you.  The main focus is developmental, more than achievement, it’s more process oriented towards spiritual and technological concerns or interests.  It’s an inward thing, but it’s down through technology.  Developing a look with a Macintosh, or developing your sound with certain midi gear, so it isn’t like sitting in a cave playing the shakahatchi or anything. @hydrangeamusic ’s life as a producer and DJ began relatively recently, when in 2014 she began expressing the quietness, wonder and intensity of nature in techno. For this prodigious French talent, creating and selecting music is an act of entering a deeper dimension, both transcendent and grounded in the hypnotic beauty of the natural world.

As a producer, she has released her own productions – which are lucid, mesmerising, arresting – on @annulled_music, @two-two-records, and @silent-season.

As a DJ, she is equally inspired by the dancefloors she plays to across Europe as by the nature around her home. She describes this mix for Patterns of Perception as a musical trip for one of her walks in the forest, creating an inner journey while being connected with the surroundings.

In Resom's own words: "The crew of De School took over ://about blank last summer and this mix here is the recording of my closing set at the most beautiful garden of ://about blank. I was overexcited, jittery and had this crazy idea to create a acoustic movie for the audience. I was performing in London the weeks before and went to an MVE where they played the soundtrack of a german 70’s Science Fiction TV series I never heard about before. It was so feminist and progressive that I decided in that moment that I have to use the samples. That’s where the citations are coming from sometimes. The reason to use those was bc I think that ://about blank and De School have a lot in common when it is about forward thinking curating and pushing debates. Of course there are mistakes being made, but again: I personally find this even more interesting, because it gives the chance to reflect, process and learn."
