This piece by Gustav Holst is near and dear to the arranger’s heart.

He will never forget playing this piece in the Oberlin Conservatory Band in his freshman year, Gene Young conducting. He had played the piece in high school, but now at Oberlin he was playing with a full band of competent musicians. What a thrill! 

Coming out of a rehearsal at the end of one day in the first semester, he experienced the shear joy of having been a part of a wonderful world of sound! That rehearsal was one of the highlights of his young life.

This is an arrangement of the three movement Suite for brass quintet. Obviously a brass quintet can not match the full sound of a concert band, but the arrangement does capture of spirit of the music. As there is not a percussion section in a brass quintet, in last movement, (March), the score asks the players to stomp their foot loudly once, to simulate a missing bass drum blast. (One would hope the performance is on a wooden stage for the effect to work well!) In this recording a bass drum sound is used, as there is no sampled “five feet stomping” sound available.

Paul Chamberlain was one of the first classical accordionists to graduate from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, where he studied with Djordje Gajic. He is a highly accomplished player and with appearances at international music festivals such as Baltica Harmonica in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Sata-Häme Soi Accordion festival in Ikaalinen, Finland, he has also performed in France, Italy, Greece, Bahrain and the USA. 

Paul was awarded a Master of Music (performance) with distinction, in classical accordion from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Whilst studying there he was awarded the acclaimed Governors Recital Prize, with a subsequent live performance broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland’s ‘Classics Unwrapped’ programme. He was also one of the keyboard section finalists in the 2011 Royal Overseas League competition. 

In 2011, he released his debut solo album entitled ‘Classical Accordion’ featuring a mixture of transcriptions of works by Bach, Rameau, Moszkowski and Khachaturian, as well as original works by Nagayev and Angelis. 

Paul has also performed with the Paragon Ensemble as part of their “Travelling Home" concert celebrating their 30th anniversary. He has given solo recitals across the UK and also performs regularly as a member of the Scottish Tango Ensemble. 

He made his Bridgewater Hall debut in February 2013 with a solo recital as part of the long established Manchester Mid-Days concert series and was featured on BBC Radio 3's "In Tune" programme with Sean Rafferty, performing live in the studio.
