I wrote this forty years ago as part of the "Scenes of St. Francis" small-town song anthology and thought it might be fun to post as fall is winding down but before the Christmas season gets into full swing.  St. Francis, Kansas is a little prairie town nestled in a shallow river valley and has an abundance of trees, mostly cottonwoods, but a few hardwoods that stand out especially in the fall. And with the trees was an abundance of squirrels always playing chase or hide and seek when they weren't getting into mischief.  They needed a song, and with my daughters being so young, I wanted to make it in the form of a children's song that they could sing along to.  As adult women, they still like to sing along when they hear it which is a good thing since my own singing voice has largely depleted with age.  But it is a nice reminder that once upon a time I could sing:) Rescued and remixed from an old but faithful cassette tape.

The winter has arrived to the northern part of our globe
and we prepare for the Christmas as we most often do
we light our candles and hope that the snow will fall down
and we find peace
in our souls - and we are doing what we can
to help those in need
The Christmas is here to remind us of how we should behave


The children are dressed up with the finest clothes they have
and the parents are preparing several wonderful meals
and if they have any money to give to the poor
they will find peace

somebody told me it's mind over matter

to the problems that lie at our feet

but we can't shut up about it

so many conversations we're all trying to be heard
and not paying any mind to the things that deserve 
our attention deficit has never been so bad I've heard

and as always there's talk, endless discussions
like a blow to the head can give you concussion
like the problems that lie in our homes
seems they only exist if someone else knows

we protest cos the cows are fartin to much
but if we eat any, the plant lovers hate our guts
cos they rather we live on daises and nuts
so we can squeeze through a crack in the wall

maybe what we need to do is find a quiet space
pull up a chair and stare into space
and for 5 minutes just be alone with our face
and shut the fuck up for a while
