Mermaid & Seafruit is the Vienna-based duo composed of the Polish artist, performer, and singer Magdalena Chowaniec and the Austrian producer, DJ, and artist Markus Steinkellner. Started in early 2015, their project has been focused on the interaction between a multitude of electronic music styles such as hardcore techno, grime, noise, and many more, with vocal-oriented genres like hip hop, r&b, and spoken word - all wrapped up in adrenaline-driven, raw-energy instances reproducing the thrill of the live music act.

Their latest effort is the 7-track album called Screens Are My New Clothes, out on 29th July 2021 on the local label Ashida Park. So far the most articulate outing in their artistic journey, the record collects various inputs the duo have been meddling with over the last 6 years in the shape of scorching, impactful tunes that will surely make it hard for you to keep on the chair.

Indebted with performance art, and well-established in the contemporary Viennese music scene, Mermaid & Seafruit use their visceral take on musical hybridization as if their life depended on it, with stunning results indeed. In their record, devastating hardcore kickdrums meet as effortlessly as air with ethereal, auto-tuned vocals; super-saw, hardstyle-inspired synths offer the perfect framework for abrupt, skramz-like screams; and obsessive, eerie trance melodies appear to be just the perfect scenario where to place dissonant rhythmic experiments.

Since the beginning, M & S's productions have also been offering a straightforward, unapologetic commentary on contemporary, late-stage capitalist society and the pandemic oppression that burdens our bodies, our emotional and mental well-being, and closes off our chances at a bright future. To this end, and more than ever with Screens Are My New Clothes, Magdalena and Markus' music provides a series of outstanding musical stimuli that work as an outlet to express unspoken feelings and unmanifested energy. A poignant, sore call to action: let's redirect our rage, let's weaponize our anger.

Via the SoundCloud player above, you can now stream the opening, eponymous track of the Screens Are My New Clothes release, the 22nd on the Viennese platform, mastered by Adam Matej and coming with album artwork by Magdalena Fischer and Magdalena Chowaniec herself. In the composition, the ferocious, on-top-of-the-lungs vocals by Magdalena moves upon loud vs soft dynamics obtained via the juxtaposition of distorted kicks and massive rave synths.

Julia Louise KnifeFist is a 22-yo producer and lyricist based in Dublin, Ireland which has been active since the late 2010s. Their music is a dense, noise-imbued manipulation of dance music styles that are beaten to a pulp to form bloody pools of distorted kicks, overwhelming feedback, and truculent vocals. In the recent past, they started investing effort into the newborn, thriving Irish collective called Bitten Twice, focused on promoting experimental rave outputs and unconventional sounds. When it comes to their solo work, JLK is reportedly out to turn the listener's insides on the outside, and they do that via an exciting mixture of genres taking shape in something that could be aptly referred to as "rave rap", as nicely demonstrated in their first live appearance https://youtu.be/uYI-rjVlV7I.

Late last year, JLK's path met with the Ghent-based record label lieftuig, closely related to the Belgian Grid crew, on which young artists such as Moses, Neocitrus, and Knechtjong already appeared over the course of the past months. INERTIA EP is the final outing stemming from the encounter and the following interactions between the two parts: a four-tracker record, spanning just a little over 11 minutes, where JLK's harsh vocal style and energetic production skills join with the vision of three other producers (namely Circular Square, who also curated the mastering of the release, and the aforementioned Neocitrus and Knechtjong).

With INERTIA EP, JLK's variegated and unrestrained creative drive, already crystallized in previous singles such as 328, Synthetic Drip, and Bite Marks, brought them to the next level of inspiration, where chaos is unleashed by means of high-spirited, inflamed compositions, and catharsis is reached via entrancing rhythms. Today, we're glad to be premiering the second track in the lotto, called Pixelated Dreams, and produced by Circular Square who also curated the video clip due next month together with Aisling Phelan.

When asked about the track, JLK refers that Pixelated Dreams is a "frustrated response to the idea of digitizing the human experience", as they believe "many parts of the experience can’t be recreated, and the advancement of technology in this way feels absurd when unsustainable structures might make the planet uninhabitable and any human experience impossible". Inspired by early dubstep and grime, the piece is a 150-second impressive run on which the bassline and the syncopated drums intertwine with the vocals, chanting detached lyrics that reflect on the feelings of rage, isolation, and disconnection ("Feeling Love and disgust / Spit and dirt in an open cut / Thousand miles between my blade and they neck / I’m dying to connect / All I see is pixelated dreams"). We're sure you'll be thrilled to stream the track via the player here below, as well as the entire EP that will be out on August 6th. Hyperlink is an experimental French label and mix series established around one year ago, focused mainly on club-oriented contemporary electronic music. After the first various artist compilation lilywhite, whose proceeds went to the charity helping women in distress called La Fédération Nationale Solidarité Femmes, the label is back with its second release, a mini digital comp called link001 which gathers six artists from all around the world.

Reportedly pondering on the possible post-pandemic scenarios that could open in the music industry and how they will affect the underground community on pivotal questions such as social equity, diversity, and inclusion, Hyperlink will try, through this record series, to pave the road for international collaborations between emerging producers and graphic artists, resulting in special works of art.

Curated by label founder and Internet Public Radio resident F̷a̷n̷n̷y̷  and mastered by Ytem, link001 will be out in digital format on September the 24th (the pre-order is already up on Bandcamp at this link). The release collects contributions from artists with different backgrounds and styles, namely Sprælle, Aeoi, KAVARI, Tristan, KARLFROYE, and Yikii. Our focus today will be on the last artist on the list, as we're pleased to be curating the premiere of the track called The Necromorph 屍變體, coming on the fourth position on the comp's tracklist.

Based in China, Yikii is a singer, poet, artist, and music producer who is not bound by any tag genre or style, as she has been consistently meddling with somber piano music, ethereal vocal dirges, cutting-edge sound design, distorted hardcore kick drums, and much more. Her peculiar take on electronic music has been already featured on important labels such as Genome6.66Mbp, Quantum Natives, Unseelie, and Danse Noire, and many more, always showcasing a sleek dichotomy between nightmarish atmospheres and grandiose explosions of energy.

In The Necromorph 屍變體, one can find Yikii at her finest moment of inspiration: destructive obscurity meets with blinding redemption; eerie melodies are enclosed in rhythmic, ruthless parades of distortion; sounds are enveloped in a highly cinematic framework where the listener's always kept on edge, their tension and anticipation toyed with by an inspired artist who can let on to infantile impulses as well as grown-up damnation.

The Peruvian Sacrilejio Records, based in Lima, surfaced on the digital worldwide underground scene in late 2020 with the debut v/a compilation called Expiation, a remarkable selection of state-of-the-art club music tracks with Latin influences by artists such as WULFFLUW XCIV, Bungalovv, Wrack, Syntrovert, Shyqa, and many more. Reportedly, the label set out to support club sounds from the Global South decrypting and blending Latinx hauntology and contemporary electronic music deconstruction.

The futuristic framework in which Sacrilejio moves allows them to incorporate variegated, deterritorialized influenced into their research around the interaction between local, traditional rhythmic figures and the worldwide electronic music vanguard. Their second outing on their path is represented by the Coffin Sounds EP, produced by the Portuguese producer and DJ Mesqit, coming with artwork by the stunning Russian musician and visual artist Digitonica and mastering by Alexis Cotrina.

Based in Porto, Mesqit started releasing music back in 2017 with the self-released Concord EP, all the way to his latest Human Feelings release out on February 2021. His focus has always been on the hybridization of different musical traditions, from Jamaican dub to middle eastern strings. On this occasion, the producer set out to showcase genres such as reggaeton, baile funk, and the so-called techrreo style, by means of an investigation into the texts of ancient Egyptian coffin effigies.

Releasing on September 23, the five tracks focus on a young man whose story begins with their premature demise, and then goes through the mummification process, until finally culminating with the rebirth they've been yearning for. From a musical point of view, the outcome is a lively ensemble of rhythms, instruments, and manipulated samples that well translates the tales of a perilous journey into different moods and settings.

Also, to complement the original compositions, two remixes of the closing track Rebirth have been included, one by the UK artist Galtier, and the other by the Tormenta-affiliated hardcore DJ and producer FKOFF1963. Today, we're indeed happy to exclusively premiere the rework by the latter: the Brazilian artist delivers one of the usual club bangers we've become accustomed to thanks to years of over-the-top explorations into hardcore genres, adding the final, energetic touch to a piece of already eventful music. Club Late Music is an open-source and collaborative music label born between Paris and London in the mid-2010s. Since then, the platform brought forward a large community of artists called Global URL Nation working on the basis of shared knowledge and creativity to craft experimental club music and multimedia works.

Specifically, GUN resorts to multiple media and formats from contemporary digital culture and music to experiment with decentralization in the form of v/a compilations, art exhibits, audiovisual projects, and collaborative efforts. To this last category belongs the GUN UNITED series, where a given member (or members) of the community manages to join forces with artists of their choice. The latest installment, the third, is now coming in form of a digital EP almost exactly one year after the previous episode courtesy of the Italian sound artist P I T.

Called Senti/Mental Illness, the record is curated by the producer and DJ Mattia Cremonini aka HeedLess, who authors a very rich blend of bass music (UK grime mostly), industrial, dark ambient, and heavy rhythmic components already appeared on labels such as Wile Out, katharsis, Classical Trax, and many more. The 4-track release, out next Wednesday, March 9th, comes with cover and visual works by chaggrin and mastering by Lorenzo Targhetta. Other than the opening solo track, the work also gathers collaborations with the Slovakian DJ GÄP, the Australian DJ / producer Lithe, and the musician POL100 born and based in Ferrara, Italy.

The collaborative record reflects around relationship breakups and the hardcore feelings associated with them - also reflected in the tracks' titles - such as despair, profound nostalgia, and the burning sense of courage and hope that may come with new bonds being born from the ashes. The heartfelt work brings the contribution of the aforementioned artists, each carrying their load of past experiences, artistic inspiration, and creative energy materialized in compositions of hyper-melodic textures, distorted vocals, and tight progressions.

Today, we're glad to be premiering the remarkable closing piece of the EP, titled BROKEUP, and produced by HeedLess and POL100. The exactly 5-minutes-long track is a dramatic charge of snappy breakbeats, eerie and distorted melodies, and distant, unintelligible voices figuratively emerging from the recesses of one's memory to bring forward unease and pain. It's up to the listener whether to welcome and overcome them towards closure and acceptance, or rather drown in the sorrow and descend on dark paths. Both choices are equally viable.
