ABOUT edIT:

From humble beginnings on the Los Angeles underground to world tours of sold-out arenas, Edward Ma has seen it all in a career that now spans more than 15 years. Starting off as The Con Artist in the late 1990s, Ma produced for rappers such as Busdriver, P.E.A.C.E and Sole while holding a residency at Konkrete Jungle, where drum n bass and hip hop were spun side by side to hungry ears. In 2003, Ma reshaped himself as edIT. The next year he debuted with Crying Over Pros For No Reason on seminal UK label Planet Mu. The album melded together Ma's love of hip hop, drum n bass and experimental electronic music, a fusion that would presage hip hop's return to its electronic roots by the end of the decade. Crying Over Pros… sounded like nothing else at the time. It sounded like the future and it would put Ma on the path of his next evolution. In 2006 he co-founded The Glitch Mob, a project that would ultimately take over his solo work by 2010. Today the Mob inhabit a unique position in the dance music world, the roots of which go back to the sonic experiments of Crying Over Pros… Ten years on, the album is being reissued on limited edition vinyl and as a digital bundle with an extra five tracks from the original sessions. Its emotive power hasn't faded one bit and its relevance has only increased as the future it hinted at became the present we now live in.

Benga vs Os Lambas (Kudustep Mashup)

Every day this month, for three minutes before midnight, some of the giant electronic billboards in Times Square flicker violently in rectangular sequences of black and white. This is not a glitch. It's test pattern [times square], an electronic piece by Paris-based Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda, reworked for 47 screens across five blocks of one of the most iconic and irritating places in the world. This is the soundtrack that was played on October 16 as part of the installation.

frank bretschneider’s new project SINN + FORM (MEANING AND FORM) is based on the idea of a fundamentally chaotic world as we know it from mathematical or physical theories and models (dynamical systems, probability theory, stochastic systems), and the constant attempt of man to recognize and to describe, predict, control and change this world.

musically, this system is simulated electronically using a modular synthesizer system. various modules produce a constant flow of randomly generated data that modulate the decisive musical parameters (pitch, note length, volume, tone). the attempt of SINN + FORM in this context is to transform this stream of events into a musically relevant system of chaos and order, dynamics and statics, content and form by means of an improvised but deliberate process of constant control and influence.

aesthetically, the project recalls the electronic music of the mid 20th century: studios such as the IRCAM in paris, stockholm’s EMS (elektronmusikstudion), the WDR »studio for electronic music« in cologne, or new york’s »columbia- princeton electronic music center«. SINN + FORM also captures the dynamics and energy of a spontaneous improvisation, last but not least as a reaction to a complex world, a world in permanent crisis.

Stroboscopic Artefacts presents the Monad series. Rarefied and introspective, confrontational and extreme, each featured artist will delve into the Monad concept:
"The generation of number series is related to objects of geometry as well as cosmogony. From the Monad evolved the Dyad; from it numbers; from numbers, points; then lines, two-dimensional entities, three-dimensional entities, bodies, culminating in the four elements earth, water, fire and air, from which the rest of our world is built up."
AOKI Takamasa's Monad IX is a stark example of exploring the periphery of contemporary electronic music and yet impressing an artisitc identity upon these fringes. An anonymous voice on 'mnd-sng-01' blurts 'shake everything', and this is his point. Shake not just yourself on the dance floor, but shake your notions of artistic processes. The tracks draw attention to themselves as constructions, they're not titled but serial numbered from 'mnd-sng-01' right through to 'mnd-sng-04'.

Stellate 1 marks the start of the Stellate Series: sounds gathered from the experimental frontiers and outer edges of electronic music. For every Stellate release four producers have each created two tracks. The eight resulting tracks highlight four unique minds and the disparate sounds that gravitate together at the periphery. SASTE001 brings together the visions of Lucy, Borful Tang, Perc and Kevin Gorman: yet as diverse as the forms and textures that they use are, something intangible provides a sense of unity. Stellate 1 taps into the place where electronic music-making began. It delves into a liminal Post-War atmosphere where the very fabric of society was being completely re-thought and composers dug into dissonance to explore the essence of 'making it new'.

Gathering sounds from the experimental frontiers and outer edges of electronic music, Stellate 3 collects together Kangding Ray, NSI, Xhin and Reformed Faction’s visions. The polished tracks are layered to the -nth degree, filled with minute details and whispered asides. These productions use an array of analogue machines and the most cunning digital means to vividly render disquieting questions.
Kangding Ray - fresh from releasing his chapter of the Monad Series - opens Stellate 3 with ‘Antar’. The atmosphere is loaded; it pulls you back and makes you slow down in order to listen with your every fibre. Built around a cyclical structure, it sways slowly, moving in a way that borders something mystical. Kangding Ray seems to tap into liminal spaces, those places where comparisons fall short and adjectives fail. Despite the slow pace and languid mood, ‘Antar’ is underpinned by an urgency that spills over into ‘Telur’. Constructed with both a different pace and with an angular architectural structure ‘Telur’ is an unsettling landscape of strange glitches and noises.
NSI’s ‘Unexpected’ and ‘Unsettling’ further this pondering, questioning mood. ‘Unexpected’ bursts into being; it’s a seven minute odyssey which seems to have departed from a 1960s space station. Littered with the surprises of the track’s namesake, perhaps the biggest of all is that such an optimistic portrayal of the future seems to be hallmarked by the past. ‘Undeserved’ is rung-in by far-off bells which signal the beginning of a synthesised Mass. Punctuated with mutated percussion, altered piano sounds and a litany of noises, the construction that emerges is a confounding and quite brilliant.
When Xhin lays down ‘Them’, he pushes the pronoun until it embodies the idea the unknown. It’s a track with a warped atmosphere where something’s most definitely awry. It’s a vinyl you’d be tempted to play backwards. Just to be sure. ‘As It Unfolds’ counterpoints this and is a wistful, ecstatically melancholy piano composition. It charts sadness as viewed from a later point in time. It’s a reflection on the process of understanding, on sifting though yesterday with a sense of collected calm.
Reformed Faction close Stellate 3 with two tracks that are a testament to their prolific analogue experiments.
There is an unmistakable curiosity at play on ‘Hollerei LX’, which vividly soundtracks a film that has only even been seen in the mind’s eye. Almost as if Reformed Faction is somehow privy to the secrets that lie curled within undeveloped rolls of film, ‘Hollerei LX’ is a visual experiment expressed through sound. ‘Koaii Twin’ is just as synaesthetic, and listening brings forth a tattered stream of imagery, a barrage of half-made connections and things better left forgotten. ‘Koaii Twin’ is probably best listened to with the lights on.
The Stellate Series is boxed exquisitely in a round metallic tin which contains two clear 10” vinyls. Each vinyl is separated by a typographic print on recycled paper. The Stellate releases also contain a hand-numbered artwork inlay by Oblivious Artefacts. The entire artwork comprises of four parts which are divided between Stellate 1 through to Stellate 4. Additionally each release contains a unique card with a download code. Each Stellate release is a strictly limited edition of 300. 

The entire Stellate Series was craftily mastered in Berlin by Artefacts Mastering.

SA015 is a split vinyl taken care of by long term label artist, Pfirter, and by a new voice that's been adding to the SA story across the summer, Kangding Ray. Pfirter's 'Caos y Orden Superior' is a weighty odyssey spread across nine minutes. Its opening is languid but somehow relentless as strange synthesised sounds are interrupted by insistent beats. Across the arc of this track 'chaos' and 'order' lose their static definitions, and played over a large club rig this has the potential to throughly disorientate. From here Kangding Ray takes over duties with 'Wars', a fragmented meditation on the darkest side of human nature. Created from hues saturated by the pain of mistakes and regrets, it pulses, rocking gently, swooning in and out. This stunning slice of electronic music acts as a balm for the very wounds that conflict leaves behind.

with kuopio, we release the second full length album by vladislav delay aka sasu ripatti. the record features eight new songs which allow the listener to dive into delay’s cosmos of deep and likewise organic sounds. subtle yet complex electronic manipulations are used, resulting in a high degree of variation within every single track and a nearly imperceptible intensification of their density.

progressive and energetic rhythms play an important role as already indicated in his recent release espoo (r-n141), the EP which forms a bridge between his former album vantaa (r-n136) and kuopio, best illustrated by the track “kulkee”, meaning “to move forward”.

kuopio clearly represents a further attempt to depict the finnish landscape as well as its isolated charm, which is also obvious from its design and conceptional approach by referring to the city of kuopio.

with RV8, the osaka-based producer and musician AOKI takamasa continues his long- term project that focuses on the modulation of rhythms and grooves. it began with his first ep ‚rhythm variations‘ in 2009, released as part three of the unun-series. besides his collaboration with raster-noton, he released records on several labels like commmons, progressive form and op.disc, produced remixes for well-known musicians like ryuichi sakamoto or yoshihiro hanno and played performances at, for example, elektra/montreal and club transmediale/ berlin, all in all making him a renowned producer in japan and beyond.

starting with a firework of bleeps and bops, already the very first minutes of his new record reveal aoki‘s preference for vibrating beats and likewise his playful approach to music, generating a sound that is aiming at the dance floor.

like the first ones, almost all tracks of the record are characterized by a constant modulation of chords and lines that sometimes appears somehow hyperactive, but nevertheless results in a natural flow that perfectly reflects AOKI‘s laid-back attitude combined with his will to produce danceable and funky music.

the fluent arrangement is only interrupted by the third track which forms a caesura by being more reduced and slower. in contrast to this, the following tracks present a faster tempo and an increased intensity; and whereas the first tracks reflect downbeat and r‘n‘b influences due to their broken beats and chunky sound, the later songs are characterized by a more sleek and technoid style, incorporating dribbling basses, clappy sounding snares and modulated voice snippets.

although all of the musical components are constantly broken down, modulated, and rearranged, the overall sound of the record is dense and compact, featuring a groove made up of numerous elements that are complexly intertwined. the eight tracks of the record fit seamlessly together and create a composition that nearly functions like a dj set.

the album was mastered by yoshinori sunahara. needless to say that RV8 will be released as cd and lp.
