Bastard Jazz Recordings is proud to present the sophomore album Curiosities by New Zealand multi- instrumentalist and producer Lord Echo (aka Mike Fabs). An enticing sonic excursion that effortlessly transcends genre and geography, the release finds Echo flexing his dual-mastery of 60's production techniques and modern dancefloor aesthetics, while also highlighting the vocal prowess of his soulful compatriots through a flowing blend of boogie-laced Funk, disco-primed Dub, futuristic Soul, and timeless African rhythms.

Fabs, known worldwide for his production work with NZ’s biggest Reggae export The Black Seeds, drew a groundswell of excitement around his debut solo album Melodies in late 2010. The independent release became a cult classic strictly through word-of-mouth, championed by tastemakers like Gilles Peterson (who played it repeatedly on his BBC Radio 1 show), Oliver Wang (Soulsides) and Richard Dorfmeister. Re-issues of the album soon followed in Japan and Europe, with vinyl copies quickly becoming a hot commodity among discerning collectors around the globe. Echo was introduced to Bastard Jazz’s DJ DRM in 2011 (via Detroit producer Recloose), and a limited 7” vinyl release on the Brooklyn-based imprint soon followed in 2012, precipitating this full length release with the label.

Curiosities picks up right where Melodies left off, with the sun-drenched psychedelic dub sounds of tracks like “Bohemian Idol” (featuring vocals by Toby Laing of Fat Freddy's Drop), and the jerky funk vibes of cuts like “Digital Haircut” and “Street Knowledge”. The album provides a wealth of DJ fodder, with forward thinking 70s-inspired disco tunes such as “Molten Lava” (featuring the soaring vocals of Leila Adu), as well as analog Afro-infused burners like “What Is That Feeling” and “Put It In My Head” (complemented by the golden-voiced Mara TK of Electric Wire Hustle fame). Down-home spiritual jazz/electronic meanderings ("Ghost Hands", “Arabesque”) provide a counterpoint to Echo's driving cover-version of the Pharoah Sanders & Leon Thomas classic “The Creator Has a Master Plan”. His inspiring take on the track is uplifted by the soulful singing of Lisa Tomlins (who's notable vocals on Echo’s rendition of Sister Sledge’s “Thinking Of You” made it a standout hit from his Melodies album).

The finely-tuned collaborations throughout Curiosities underscore Lord Echo's pivotal position in the thriving New Zealand music scene. "I generally only work with people I know quite well personally", says Echo humbly. That personal and organic approach to creating his music is revealed as the album unfolds, layer by delectable layer. "I made this record primarily with DJs in mind," he continues. "They are generally people who really love music and are often obsessed with various aspects of it. I'm not making music for people for whom it's just some background noise in their lives, I'm making music for people for whom it IS their lives. And for better or worse, I guess I am one of those people."

A diverse, yet grounded LP chock full of head-turning sounds, Curiosities further pushes Lord Echo’s repertoire into the realm of the inimitable, and is sure to pique the interest of discerning music lovers from down-under to the big apple.

In these fastmoving times, where many acts come and go in the space of a few blog posts, it's becoming harder and harder to find artists with true staying power. Anu Pillai aka Freeform Five is one of those rare artists. Following an impressive series of originals & remixes and productions for artists like Ladyhawke, Santigold, Lana Del Rey and Little Boots, he returned to the scene with ‘Weltareh’, a collaboration with Gambian griot and master musician Juldeh Camara. On ‘Leviathan’ Freeform Five teams up with the legendary Róisín Murphy for an exercise in irresistible vocal power and anthemic, feel good appeal. Tom Trago delivers an incarnation of ‘Leviathan’ that highlights the shimmering synths and melodies and puts the funk edge and drum beats centre stage. Cage & Aviary provide a slice of dirty electro tech in their remix teeming with solid claps and bleeps and FX.

One of the youngest DJs on the Belgian DJ circuit, Maxime Firket aka Compuphonic soon moved onto the international scene with a release on Tiga’s Turbo Recordings. Further releases came on other highly acclaimed labels including Get Physical, Modular, Darkroom Dubs, Systematic Recordings, 2020 Vision and Parquet Recordings. On his ‘Leviathan’ remix, Compuphonic injects a playful bounce into the soaring sonics of the original melody.

South London based Cage & Aviary provide a slice of dirty electro tech in their remix teeming with solid claps and bleeps and FX. The duo started off with releases on the much acclaimed Dissident Distribution and have since appeared on DFA, Tiny Sticks, Astro Lab and Prins Thomas' Internasjonal label. They also run their own label The Walls Have Ears. 

Tom Trago delivers two incarnations of ‘Leviathan’ firstly a dub version that highlights the shimmering synths and melodies and puts the funk edge and drum beats centre stage. His remix closing the package reintroduces Róisín’s unforgettable voice. Tom Trago is one of the Netherland’s finest producers and is the most prominent artist on Amsterdam institution Rush Hour Recordings, his third album came out on the label October last year and he also curates the offshoot label series Voyage Direct.

Belgium’s music scene has few cornerstones. R&S set a first in the 80s, Soulwax came in the 90s and Eskimo emerged in the early 00s, its evolution since more colourful than all of them combined. Taking music into emotion, introducing new names and spotlighting the cream of the current crop, ‘The Orange Collection’ is bright, genial and buoyant. 

‘The Orange Collection’ is the latest installment in a new compilation series on Eskimo based around colours. Following the lauded first three chapters in this enterprising series -Pink, Blue and Green- Eskimo once again selected 12 songs with exquisite care. An effortless journey encompassing a range of sounds through indie dance, nu disco and electronica, it’s reassuring to find that Eskimo still stands for timeless quality and originality.

The past twelve months have been the hardest year of my life. Many nights were spent wondering if my life still had value and if life was worth living. For the first time in my life I didn't even have the strength to pray for myself. I would try to pray and when it did it would only remind me of the pain I felt. To cope with the pain I would take different medications to help me sleep and hope the storm would pass. When I would wake up the pain would still be in my heart, the clouds didn’t move, and the light at the end of the tunnel seemed so far away. However when I couldn’t pray for myself, I’m so grateful there was someone else praying for me and holding me up. I could feel those prayers as people began to encourage me. It was like new life was breathed into my body and spirit. God began to show that this time it wasn’t so much the enemy, it was the INNER ME. I couldn’t blame anything or anyone else. I needed to take some time and work on me. I had to realize that I wasn't being strong by avoiding my issues but I found strength in acknowledging my imperfections so that I could be healed and then allow my story to help others. I understood the grace and mercy of GOD but I didn’t just want forgiveness, I wanted to be healed, I wanted to be better. I began to get the help that I needed to become a better person from the inside out. This process wasn’t easy but it was so necessary. God is still completing the good work on the inside of me, but I realize it’s more than just asking. I had to be intentional in making sure that I was doing my part. I had to do the work to become a better person. I had to stop running from the part of me that I didn't like and deal with it head on. God couldn't change what I was afraid to confront. When I couldn’t find the words and strength to pray, I thank GOD someone else was praying for me. The prayers of the righteous for me and my family really did save my life.

Toy Tonics going Afro House. The MUSHROOM HOUSE compilation series part brings 4 unreleased tracks. Including two of the most relevant names of the growing scene: AUNTIE FLO from UK and mysterious producer HYENAH. Hyenah is a favourite of the scene's main man Black Coffee and DJs like Dixon and the Innervisions circle are heavy fans. Also on this EP a new track by Toy Tonics very own ZHUT & KAPOTE. Kids from Berlin with a good buzz right now. Inside their track Afro Rico an Senegalese child choir meets some Zappaesque Marimbas going crazy... Banana Hill resident Al Zanders (aka Alex Buchan) has been turning heads for a while. Having already teared it up with releases on Karakul, Stamp Records and his eponymous A-Z Records, the Sheffield-based artist now presents Ripley's Voyage/Dexter's Morning.

Keeping the momentum, Al Zanders seals the deal with certified slam dunk of a B-side, "Dexter's Morning". This is the musical embodiment of a disco ball. A track purely orientated for the dance floor with an enslaving hook on guitar and keys, adorned by golden-age synth and a shedload of feel good disco-style instrumentals.

Catch the fire as it drops on 26th September via A-Z Records.

Pair of fresh cuts from Portuguese disco-duo Cisco Cisco on Apersonal Music. Continuing the love saga that started with "If you want me" and later with "Higher" now they uncover two versions of the same single, jazzy days and nights. "Jazzy days" is a laid-down melodic house tune that builds up along soulful voice samples and live percussions, it feels optimistic and refreshing, a perfect track to set things up. UK disco connoisseur Ron Basejam (Crazy P) stepped into the release by remixing "Jazzy Days", as usual to an original track level, taking a more straight disco direction. As expected the result is impeccable and works beautifully.

The Bian

French producer Folamour launches Moonrise Hill Material, a label he co-founded with Ethyene, Kaffe Crème and Okwa, with his second album titled 'Umami'. 

At just over ten minutes, 'Devoted To U' is the longest track on the album, but rightfully so. The ballad takes listeners on a sonic journey through Folamour's dancefloor-focused motif with warm textures and infectious rhythms. 

The album itself is an ode to his love of Japanese culture. Expect to find a diverse mix of house, disco swing and future jazz when 'Umami' is released on September 29.

Perlair (Le Bal du Ruisseau, Vevey, Switzerland)

Perlair has been immersed in music since childhood, immersed in the sounds of jazz, afrobeat, disco and electronic music. A DJ sought after for his rare ability to get crowds dancing by mixing styles, he is a musician and producer who blends the inspirations of the blue note with electronic experimentation cut out for the dancefloor. 

His previous collaborations include Kalabrese, Atjazz, somalian singer Hibotep and has been chosen to appear on a Seven Davis Jr. compilation, amongst many other.

Collaborating with local artists, his music is the soundtrack to a sunset on the Riviera. Now curator of the Caves du Cep in Vevey, he also played a key role in the creation of the Les Disques du bord de l’eau label and its radio station, based in Sierre, birthplace of the Weekend au bord de l’eau festival.
He created the Bal du Ruisseau, a dance event that combines the elegance of a bal with the vibrant atmosphere of daytime clubbing.
