Sophie Barker, the sublime voice behind Zero 7’s stunning first two albums will release her new solo album ‘Seagull’ through independent label,  Ho Hum Records on May 9th.

You may know Sophie Barker as one of the vocalists on Zero 7’s Simple Things, that luscious, sweeping vocal at the forefront of the album’s breakaway hit ‘In The Waiting Line’. You may also know her for her work with Groove Armada, The Egg,  Grooverider, Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and Muki, or maybe for her previous solo album Earthbound. She also worked on the Rainbow Collections, a series of children’s music.  It’s been a packed 10 years, that’s for sure – but with the release of Seagull, comes the chance to know the real Sophie.

Fibratus is a London based producer and remix artist creating a number of interactive and participatory music works.

Just after Winter Solstice 2013, Toronto was hit with a large scale ice storm. Despite the devastation it caused, I decided to focus on the beauty that it created for 2 or 3 days after by photographing as much as possible of the Scarborough Bluffs area (one of the hardest hit regions of the GTA).  And secondly composing a custom piece of music that I felt captured the feeling of it all.  Stark, cold, beautiful, serene, yet isolated. If you had the option of not being surrounded by people constantly, you could go out and witness this both harsh and beautiful side of nature.

This is designed to be a meditation.  A meditation and reminder that nature can be beautiful and open, yet harsh and devastating at the same time.  When we choose to distance ourselves from nature and only exploit it for our personal gains, we become disconnected. Forgetting that we are not in control so much as we'd like to think. We are reliant on a delicately balanced system for our air, water, food and shelters to live healthy lives. 

More and more I see blatant disrespect and disregard for the planet that sustains our lives.  Should we choose to not make better decisions for our future, one just might be made for us.  These sorts of storms and hard times should serve as a reminder of this, our level of preparedness, and our ability to coexist rather than trample over and destroy.

 MUSIC -  gives us the possibility to experience how music, sound-storys, organic field recordings, atmospherics, noise aso. is reflecting and expressing the state of mind of the people and culture of the habitat in our own time. Every region of the earth has it's own musical expression, identity and language, (ever changing of course), some are very active, upfront and visual, others grounded in old ritual tradition, others purely celebrating mother nature and life. The nordic AMBIENT music expression today is up front, modern, active, well known and appreciated widely around the world, for it's emotional seriousity, elemental character and fascinating, recognizable almost visual atmosphere of the natures direct impact on the soundscape, atmosphere and story told or translated.

 NATURE -  has no borders, nor has the music, neither do we. As we get into the ambient, sound-scaping, storytelling, exploring spirit and ancient ground, we get wise on our own habitat, nature, our people and ourself, trough the fine tools of art, sound & music. Sharing these reflections in musical works, experience & wisdom with our brothers & sisters, is what art is all about. The artist will always seek and explore all sides of life & nature, then translate and express it trough the tools of art, so that others who don't have the time, means or the gift to explore it, is given access to this source of knowledge, trough the artists work with the umbrella of all arts, the music. The only, yet, universal language humans have.
