Uptown Funk's Sunday Grooves pt: 02 18.07.21

Welcome to the 17th edition of That Disco Groove Radio Show. We've taken it upon ourselves to amend the usual running order for the show for this week in order to bring you a special tribute to a Chicago House Music icon, the late Paul Johnson who sadly passed away earlier this month. With a discography spanning decades and ranging from uplifting piano house right through to peak-hour techno, it's his signature sound of disco loops, driving kick drums and jackin beats that we've delved into for the first 30 minutes of the show. This in turn is followed by this week's Vinyl Exclusive from the man himself.

New Releases for this week kicks off with 2 slow burners courtesy of Javi Star & Mark Picchiotti on Groove Culture and Marco Zappala & Alma Nata on Nu Monkey. The tempo climbs from there with new and forthcoming releases from the likes of Jonk & Spook, Razor N Tape label boss Jkriv & Dicky Trisco under there production collaboration moniker Sentimental Animals and Igor Gonya on his own Lisztomania Records. 

Moonroy further builds his reputation as a breakout production talent with a track taken from his new Corona Moon EP on Super Spicy Records. The Disco Express label continue their rise with the new (free) XPRESS Edits Vol.5 which contains 4 tasteful edits/re-edits and we've chosen the talented Hector Zaroni's edit of Ghallib Ghallab's School Day's. And let's not forget the new horn-laden, afro inspired Up In Smoke from Tropical Disco label boss, Sartorial! 

For Guestmix duties this week are delighted to play host to UK DJ & Producer, Reece Johnson who has brought us a fantastic, energetic mix with just the right amount of deeper twists and turns. With releases under his belt on the likes of Lumberjacks In Hell, Robsoul Recordings & Moment Cinetique as with forthcoming vinyl releases on Super Spicy Records and Perro Beuno Edits as well as digitial releases on Midnight Riot, Midnight Riot and Sundries, Reece is most certainly one to keep a close eye on! Empty Plate Radio Mix 004 - Funkfest!

This week's guest for the second hour is Mark Stone from Manchester in the UK. Mark was born in the early 70’s and grew up in a musical family where he learned to play the piano. He was musically influenced by his parents who listened to 1950’s Jazz, Country, Soul, Funk, Motown, Disco and Philadelphia. 

From a very early age Mark became an avid record collector.Whilst serving in the British Forces in the mid-20s, Mark used to collect and play records and CDs to his friends. Upon leaving the forces in the 90s Mark bought some old belt drive turntables and started his DJ journey.

He has played throughout the UK and abroad at Cream and had a peak time residency at the QClub in Faliraki, where he had the opportunity to play along side some great DJs including Steve Sutherland, SLK, Slipmatt and Panos, to name but a few. 

Mark has a HNC in Music Engineering and has produced music, bootlegs and edits.  After college Mark went on to gain a BA Hons Degree in Film Production. He has produced music videos and currently works on short films as a freelance film editor alongside his regular job. He also used to host his own radio show on Grooveskool Radio. 

His musical taste is eclectic, covering genres such as 1960s Motown, Philly Sound, Soul, Funk, Disco, Old Skool, House, Slo Mo and Nu Disco. If it has a good beat, Mark will play it!

Episode 61: Feel Good Friday Radio Show (special guest Mark Stone)

This week’s special guest is Gregg Holmes AKA Fingerman, a DJ, producer and label owner who is a major player on the disco scene . 

Originating from Brighton, UK and currently based in Belfast, Fingerman has moved between styles over the years,  ranging from Techno to House before firmly finding his feet with Disco. He set up a vinyl residency at the legendary Casablanca Jazz club spinning strictly extended disco twelves which led to his own DJ friendly edits surfacing on Soundcloud and Bandcamp.

His editing style soon caught the ears of many respected DJs on the scene such as Dimitri in Paris and Greg Wilson (who has charted Fingerman edits consecutively for 5 years even to the point of releasing a few of them on his own vinyl imprint A&R edits)

Fingerman released a number of tracks and and remixes on labels such as Midnight Riot, Masterworks, Hotbox Boogie, Wall Of Fame and Discodat over the years, before setting up his own record label “Hot Digits Music” in 2014. The label, alongside vinyl only offshoot “Wax Digits”, has been placed at the coveted number one slot on Juno on several occasions, and has released up and coming, established editors and original artists such as Dr Packer, Hotmood, Late Nite Tuff Guy, OOFT!, Situation, Get Down Edits, Dave Gerrard, Andy Buchan, P-Sol and Melon Bomb to name but a few. 

He has been Doing around the world and the UK for many years, also putting on roadblock proportion parties at Brighton Gay Pride for 5 consecutive seasons in the Summer.

He also hosts a weekly two-hour show on Street Sounds Radio

Episode 62: Feel Good Friday Radio Show (special guest Fingerman)

The Black Light Disco Show bobbed and weaved its way back on the MyHouse Radio airwaves - now the smorgasbord of sass and class is available for your listening pleasure at leisure! 

Our host this week was BLD resident Memberberry, Esteban who was dishing out the grooves from BLD Towers’ newly fitted Planetarium like a chef at an all you can eat buffet. This week’s pickings included tracks from Ken@Work, Alien Disco Sugar, Pete Ellison and Jisco Dazz to name but four! 

Joining Esteban in Stellar Cartography was our guest for the evening, a dude who is making a most welcome return to the BLD fold, Even Funkier! 

Tom AKA Even Funkier has been a busy bee since he was last on the show. Kicking off a superb new weekly show on Mixlr, Tom has also completed a marathon streaming session for charity and found the time to see releases on massive labels such as See-Saw, Hot Digits Music and Too Slow To Disco. It was obvious that success was just around the corner for this absolute diamond geezer, and it’s thoroughly deserved in our humble opinion. So pin your ears back, tidy the living room and take in the sounds of an energised and super-charged Even Funkier!

London-based DJ and producer Pete Ellison has been spinning music for 25 years and has a passion for funk and disco, blending sounds of the 70s with house beats, vocal samples and chunky basslines.

He broadcasts a weekly show on NDC Radio called the "Feel Good Friday Show", with a special guest each week from the Nu-Disco world. The show won the award of "Best Radio Show" at the OGV Music Awards in 2022. 

He's had releases on Super Spicy Records, Spincat Music, Discoholics Anonymous, Mango Sounds, Discography Lessons, Spa In Disco, Duchesse and Hot Digits. Two of his tracks have hit the Number 1 spot on Juno Download.  

He runs a London DJ collective called Serendipity who throw underground events and boat parties. He has played at dozens of London clubs,  and has played at Wilderness, Secret Garden Party, boat parties, woodland raves, Ibiza pool parties and even the dungeon of a French chateau. Long DJ sets are a speciality, with his longest ever DJ performance being an epic 12-hour set.

Pete is also part of The Disco Waltons, a group of International DJs and Disco Lovers who came together during lockdown through their love of music. They host a Sunday night show on NDC Radio, playing on rotation with special guests

As well as Funk, Soul and Disco, he plays Melodic Techno, House and Progressive House
