This week's special guest is Ben Holtam aka BenG (Benjie). Hailing from Cornwall in the UK, Ben began his DJ career with a pair of belt-driven turntables which he was given for his 14th birthday. At that time, he solely played hip hop music. As soon as he was old enough, BenG took out a loan and bought a set of Technic1200s. From here, he never looked back.

BenG soon began producing mixtapes and playing at house parties, before securing his first guest DJ slot. That quickly turned into a residency at the local hip hop night in Plymouth, known as The Flava. The Flava slot helped BenG build his following as well as his connections. From here came radio show guest appearances, travel around the country and performing to new, bigger crowds.

During the late 90s, BenG started exploring the sampled originals that had contributed to his love for hip hop. Discovering the art of funk, soul, jazz and eventually disco, this journey also led BenG to garage, 80s electronic music and house music. Playing clubs from Cornwall to Manchester, BenG took his music from the dancefloor to the airwaves when he launched ‘DJ BenG Presents’, a radio show and podcast. The two-hour show aired for several years, on multiple stations around the globe. It consistently delivered the freshest house music and featured a guest DJ each week.

Alongside this, BenG later produced a second podcast known as ‘The Rebirth’: an eclectic mix of future beats, hip hop and old funk and soul. The Rebirth was heavily influenced by BenG’s past musical experiences, all dug deep from his extensive record collection and drawing on his wide musical knowledge.

Today BenG enjoys playing a mix of disco and house for music lovers in bars and bistros, but he still loves to take it to the clubs and entertain the dance crowds. Following a break for a couple of years, he is now back to his music and plans for the future

Episode 66: Feel Good Friday Radio Show (special guest DJ BenG)

In the realm of Balearic beat, the vinyl notes waver between the echoes of house and Italo house, embracing the mellow sway of deep house. A languid R&B-infused beat, clocking in below 119bpm, sets the rhythm, composed of the essential trio: bass drum, snare, and hi-hats, often choreographed by the Roland TR-909 drum machine. These beats unfold in a laid-back dance, a rhythmic tapestry woven with the soulful threads of Latin, African, Funk, and Dub influences. Balearic beat borrows production techniques from its dance music contemporaries, an eclectic fusion popular in its heyday.

Vocals, though intermittent, share the stage with instrumental compositions, where acoustic instruments like guitars and pianos occasionally join the melodic conversation. Yet, tethered to a specific percussion pattern that eventually fell out of favor, the once-prominent Balearic beat gracefully bowed out, its repertoire assimilated into the broader realms of "chill out" and "downtempo" genres.

The architects of Balearic beat, in contrast to their UK disciples, define its essence as the DJ's ability to traverse a vast sonic landscape, navigating from the early minimalism of New Beat to the pioneering extended remixes of pop anthems. Balearic DJ sets are a testament to the art of musical divergence, marked by sharp turns in direction. Beyond Ibiza's shores, the general perception labels Balearic beat as a distinct music style. However, within the island's community, it is a rebellion against conformity, an embrace of non-style—a challenge to the norm. It embodies a freestyle expression seamlessly binding sporadic vinyl inspirations through technical finesse on the turntables.

In the present electronic dance music landscape, where stylistic boundaries reign supreme, only a handful of promoters and DJs dare to stretch the spectrum of styles as far as Balearic beat once did, fearing the loss of identity and clientele. DJ Alfredo remains a torchbearer of diversity among Ibiza DJs, but the art of mixing and the terminology that once defined Balearic beat have largely been absorbed by the Chillout scene.

HUGO DRAXX SOULFUL HOUSE MIX APRIL 2024

I started this fortnight’s show with something brand new and unreleased from me, then wobbled around the tempos as usual. Largely kept quiet as I keep getting mic feedback and haven’t been able to sort it out yet. Ended my hour with a nice trio of obscure disco gems up at around 130bpm, in preparation for my guest! 

My guest was Abby Daze, a multi-genre DJ from London. Abby’s mix went in quick and didn’t let up, keeping the energy high and the mixing fast throughout. But she packed a ton of good stuff into this decidedly peak time set. Massive thanks to Abby, and give her a follow on Insta…

Welcome along to this weeks Disco Waltons Sunday Service. This week on hosting duties is our Irish legend Cole Kutz the Waterford wanderer.

Cole is an integral member of our little group & is a top DJ & radio host for Waterfords Opentempo FM & Black Light Disco on Myhouseradio.fm Cole will be warming things up for our special guest Maurice Shield aka Moz B.

Maurice Shield has been DJing since he got out his nappies in the late 80s well when he was 13. Originally from Newcastle this cheeky Geordie grew up in the home of Rez and loves his oldskool and early house sounds spinning in clubs like Rockshots and many others but loves all genres of music from disco right through to jungle and all sorts in-between.

A few of us had the pleasure of meeting him when we attended the Scottish House and Disco Festival so we are looking forward to hearing what he has to bring on tonights show.

Disco Dance Radio Show - #167 - Guest Dj: Andrea Fiorino

London-based DJ and producer Pete Ellison has been spinning music for 25 years and has a passion for funk and disco, blending sounds of the 70s with house beats, vocal samples and chunky basslines.

He broadcasts a weekly show on NDC Radio called the "Feel Good Friday Show", with a special guest each week from the Nu-Disco world. The show won the award of "Best Radio Show" at the OGV Music Awards in 2022. 

He's had releases on Super Spicy Records, Discoholics Anonymous, Mango Sounds, Spa In Disco and Hot Digits. Two of his tracks have hit the Number 1 spot on Juno Download.  

He runs a London DJ collective called Serendipity who throw underground events and boat parties. He has played at dozens of London clubs,  and has played at festivals, boat parties, woodland raves, Ibiza pool parties and even the dungeon of a French chateau. Long DJ sets are a speciality, with his longest ever DJ performance being an epic 8-hour set.


Pete is also part of The Disco Waltons, a group of International DJs and Disco Lovers who came together during lockdown through their love of music. They host a Sunday night show on NDC Radio, playing on rotation with special guests

As well as Funk, Soul and Disco, he plays Melodic Techno, House and Progressive House
