BRIAK MIXTAPE #AUTUMN'21

This week's special guests are Twin Sun, aka Jamie Willcox & Pete Wheeler. They formed in 2015 at Glastonbury Festival after an overexcited conversation escalated into them becoming a fully fledged production and songwriting duo.

  Early live sets saw Twin Sun perform as main support act to Maribou State, Bondax and Drop Out Orchestra before taking to festival stages with a full band (including Alex Woodward from Black Honey on drums and Jennifer Stearnes from Saltwater Sun on vocals) at Glastonbury, Penn Fest, Are You Listening? and Readipop Festival. 

 Twin Sun’s edits have received support from Greg Wilson, who included them in his Top 10 edits of 2016 & Fleetmac Wood, who have invited the duo to DJ alongside them at Fabric, Printworks, Troxy, XOYO and Glastonbury over the years since they formed. 

 Radio support for Twin Sun’s original songs include Huw Stephens (Radio 1), John Kennedy (X-Posure, Radio X), Amazing Radio (A-Playlist), Richard Latto (BBC Local Radio) & BBC Introducing Berkshire.

  2021 saw Twin Sun release a series of well received tracks and edits via Midnight Riot, Discoholics Anonymous, Too Slow To Disco and Hot Digits as well as an official remixes for disco legends Odyssey and one of their biggest influences, Drop Out Orchestra.
DJ bookings for the duo have also seen them join the likes of Norman 
Jay, Erol Alkan, Crazy P and many more on the Summer line-up of Between The Bridges on London South Bank, playing Wilderness Festival 2021 and alongside Craig Charles, Utah Saints, Natasha Kitty Katt and more in their hometown of Reading.

  As we enter 2022, the duo remain busy preparing more music and future releases, kicking off with an EP on Discoholics Anonymous this spring.

We recently came across DJ Ferdinand Debeaufort on Soundcloud and it’s safe to say that we were seriously impressed by both the quality of his work and also his sublime choice of tracks to edit. His work is packed with dancefloor soul.

We got Ferdinand straight in to do a mixtape for us so that he could showcase his undoubted skills and we also had a brief chat to him about his career so far and his approach to his work in the studio. Bombstrikes welcomes Mr.Doris & D-Funk for their debut single: 'All Down' featuring N'fa Jones and Cantaloop. Whilst they may be new for the label, they are certainly not new to the scene. This one has real international flavour to it with the four collaborators hailing from Ibiza, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. When not touring the globe as resident for huge events such as Glitterbox, Space and Pacha, Mr. Doris can be found on the beautiful white Isle of Ibiza, where his fusion sound of funk, soul, hip hop and house has seen him produce with legends such as Nightmares on Wax and Groove Armada. D-Funk resides in Sydney where he has a long established a global reputation as a legendary purveyor of all things beats, breaks and funk over multiple tours and 100 plus releases. That pedigree is definitely on show with this release. First up, the original mix of 'All Down' fuses broken beats with deep bass dives, organ riffs and funk guitar licks which is all brought together by the outstanding vocals of N'fa Jones and Cantaloop. 'On the flip', Aldo Vanucci, most notable as Plymouth's 14th best DJ, does what he does best and funks out the groove with infectious horn hooks and delivers a head nodding master of a remix. Once again showing why he counts the likes of Fatboy Slim amongst his biggest fans. Based on this debut, the combination of Mr. Doris & D-funk with Bombstrikes sounds like it could be a perfect match!

If ever there was someone who the phrase “How does he find time to make that?” was about, serial editor and remixer Pete Le Freq is it. His reworks have been played on BBC Radio 6 regularly by Craig Charles, and DJs the world over, and the sheer number of tracks he produces have caused people to suggest he doesn't sleep much.

Pete started producing over 12 years ago, and made a bit of noise with his house label Llama Farm Recordings. He's been remixed by Jay-J, Eric Kupper and Kenny Summit, appeared on compilations with Joey Negro and LCD Soundsystem, and played alongside  the likes of Crazy P, Inland Knights, CagedBaby and a few others. 

Since discovering the things he was sampling were better than the things he was making, Pete found that retouching and reworking the originals gave him his producing mojo back, and soon after Alpaca Edits was born. 

The York based edits label has since become home to disco superstars such as Dr Packer, Chuggin Edits, and Mannix. He’s been resident DJ at Sotano in York for the last 7 years, and this has fuelled his productions to greater heights. He’s known for playing 5 hour sets that incorporate both his new productions and others versions of serious disco action.

2019 has seen Pete get a vinyl release alongside the likes of Fingerman, Al Kent and Sleazy McQueen on Samosa Recordings, produce remixes for the likes of Hot Digits and Midnight Riot, as well as having 4 eps of his reworks on his own Alpaca Edits. He’s also debuted at Tramlines Festival in Sheffield, and made a return to rock the Toil Trees stage at Beatherder for the second year running. 

November saw him support Michael Gray and Fingerman at Distrikt in Leeds and Derek Kaye in York. The year ended with him beating the likes of Mousse T and Ray Mang in the Traxsource Nu-Disco Top 100 Artists of the year. 

Lockdown saw Pete go into rework overdrive, running a weekly Thursday night stream, as well as starting a regular show on Street Sounds Radio. He also worked with Ashley Slater of Freak Power on some original tracks.

2021 has seen the return of Pete’s That Needs An Edit nights in York, and will culminate in December with a guest slot from Shaka Loves You.
