These are Interbay tracks that, for various reasons, have not yet been listened to by at least 100 people.  Some of them are some of the first Interbay tracks on SoundCloud, others are in genres that aren't well represented by listeners here on SoundCloud, and some just got ignored by the algorithm.  

If a track on this list gets at least 100 listens, it will be taken off this playlist...and it would be my hope that someday this playlist will be empty--because all of these misfit toys deserve to end up under someone's Christmas tree.

(As I type this, there are a couple of songs that haven't been listened to by anyone.  I feel bad for them.  Maybe you could give  some of these tracks a listen?)

The Undeservedly Ignored Side of Interbay (they just want to be loved, is that so wrong?)

This is a dark-wave / new-wave track inspired by Depeche Mode. The theme is being different to others, and being happy out of place.

I was a big fan of trip hop and acid jazz when those scenes made themselves known during the UK-centric dance music boom of the 90s, (when I was both a nightclub dj AND the dance music buyer for an independent record store here in Seattle.)  It was a nice respite from the endless (but admittedly gloriously floor-filling) four on the floor...good for listening in your car, at home, or at the club.  

Anything could find its way into a trip hop song--it seemed, at least at the beginning, unbound by genre constrictions or expectations.  (Acid Jazz became codified rather quickly, and soon the term fell out of favor.)  

So, what better way to spend a Monday morning than to craft together a trip hop tune, done Interbay style?  

I had a couple of specific ideas in mind.  I wanted to have an early section that sounded like an old soul record--scratchy vinyl and all.  I could have found an old soul record and put Icarus' life at risk, I could have tracked down one of the royalty free soul samples that hip hop beatmakers flock to...  Instead, I used a couple of virtual instruments that I'd never used before to come up with my own brass and strings...then, I threw in a slowed down electro-swing vocal adlib that reminds me, a little bit, of a Billie Holiday-style vocalist.  I purposefully chose a Hofner violin bass (what Macca used in the early Beatles era) to play the bassline in this section--it's trebly, it feels old school, and it would sound decidedly different when the OTHER parts of the song came in.  

Now, this "old sounding song is a misdirection for when the new sounding song starts" trick is something I've done before--it was prominent in "Paging Through Your Scrapbooks"...which is one of my favorite Interbay tracks but, sadly, it is one of the most slept on.  (Dig into the library and check it out--once you get past the opening framing device, you'll find a damn good pop song in a blender full of styles!)  

For the newer sounding part of the song, I changed the beat, used a distorted synthesizer to play my bassline (which I think sounds great, but of course, I may be a bit biased) and I found a couple of strong, ethereal, female vocal samples that said something I felt like I would say (that's the source of the opening couplet at the top of this description)...and then I repeated another vocal sample (just repeating "fading away") in both the old sounding and new sounding sections...and my work was pretty much done.  

...as if I could just leave ANY Interbay track being that simple.  

I wanted to create a transition section so the change back from the new sounding section to the old sounding section wouldn't seem so abrupt.  It also gave me the chance to throw in some jazzy organ (that I processed into oblivion--why?  Because I could.) and some baritone sax (same reason.)  

And then I thought of a movie that I used to surprise people with on VHS--I'd surprise them with it, because it was a delightful UK film that hardly anyone in the US had ever heard of, much less seen.

Throw it all together and, again, admitting my bias, I think it's one of the better Interbay tracks--it is consistent, it holds together, and it tells a story.  

Plus, it's got a good beat...and it's easy to dance to!

This song was originally written as an acoustic track with just piano and vocals, and has been through multiple levels of feedback to reach its current stage. I have tried to approach overcoming isolation and depression in a way that is generally relatable, and to build to an optimistic conclusion. It's in Db Major, which is the musical equivalent of someone putting on a happy face.

Last night, I watched a YouTube video about the song "River Man" by Nick Drake and I was inspired to craft a song in a similar style.  

(Spoiler:  "Forever In This Moment" doesn't sound ANYTHING like Nick Drake.)  

I had a funny idea for some lyrics and I'd say I was 85% done when suddenly I swerved, veered off course, and landed here this morning with "Forever In This Moment."  

What happened?  Quite simply, the lyrics didn't fit with the vibe of the song I had at the time.  So, I paused and took a second look at what I'd made.  I took out some parts, I added other elements, I changed the arrangement, I swapped out instruments, I gated the hell out of my drums...and suddenly, I had something VERY different.  

So, I took out the lyrics that no longer fit (I'll try to use them sometime in the future) and I found a couple of vocal samples that I felt fit...and suddenly, a completely new narrative for the track revealed itself.  

...this was a seance.  

This was an attempt to speak with the deceased through a medium...or maybe it was just someone so heartbroken that they tried simply to speak to the sky in hopes they could make contact on their own.  

It wasn't what I was thinking when I started this track, but I embraced it and went with it.  

Despite the newly discovered theme, this isn't a spooky song (otherwise, I'd be saving it for a few months).  Instead, this is some 80s style "big music"--and I tried to produce it like I thought Steve Lillywhite might have produced it.  Not only do the pianos sound large and majestic, but there's s major melodic element based around a viola.  (Reminder to myself--write more songs with viola!)  

There are synths, to be sure.  The bass is a synth bass (though I thought many times about swapping that out...but, in the end, I felt like it worked) and there's some glitchy arpeggios going on, too.  

Oh, and did I mention that I managed to get a Rickenbacker guitar sound on here, too?  (That's a rather dumb question, seeing as I can see what I'm writing before I post this...and I know damn well that I haven't mentioned that.  No wonder these descriptions get so long!)  

If "Visitation" was a fun, bouncy slice of dance pop cheese--perfect for a Saturday night...then "Forever In This Moment" feels just as appropriate for a Sunday afternoon.  Or anytime, really...I don't know what your schedule is like.

Today's Interbay track (did you know that there's a never before heard Interbay track dropping every single day?  You really should follow this page.  The rollercoaster is a fun one!) is one of the tracks where I start by looking for fun words that start with unusual letters and see what my brain cooks up as far as some music that I imagine would fit that word as chosen for the title of the song.  

(When you've dropped brand new tracks for 470 consecutive days, sometimes you need to change your process every so often to not just make the same track over and over again.  And, leaving certain decisions to fate--or, in this case, to a dictionary--can push you into creative places you might not have ended up on your own!  I feel like I need to thank Brian Eno here, but I wasn't directly following any of his creative strategies, really.  I just like making tracks with titles that incorporate the whole alphabet, and this is how I figured out how to do that.)  

Sometimes, vast impacts can have origins from what might seem like insignificant changes.  That was what the title of this track inspired me to work towards.  That's not what Xylyl means, but it does talk about the results of what happens to a few specific things when removing a hydrogen atom.  Thus the "remove one atom and the whole world changes" conceit--which is more of an idea connected to "the butterfly effect" than anything to do with isomeric monovalent radicals derived from the three xylenes.  

(The best thing about Interbay for me is that I get to learn about so many random things!)  

I also look for inspirations by trying different plugins--both instruments and effects--to see how using them informs my creative process.  My choices, often quite random and based on the names of plugins I've collected over the past couple of years, can either focus an idea towards a specific sound goal...or it can spread it out and become the sort of mishmash that Interbay, if it is known at all, is known for...  

This time, I got pushed into a late 70s early 90s synth vibe.  One of the sounds I discovered in a plugin I've only used rarely, sounded a lot like Gary Numan...so, I then chose to use the Vox Humana sound that Numan used so effectively from a different plugin...and all that seemed to fit the unusual retro drum machine that I was working with.  Unusual in that the drum sounds it had were somewhat thin and not nearly as punchy/thumpy as modern dance music expects (though, I did beef that sound up with some fx in this end mix.)  

One other touchstone here?  The title track to the "Moonlight and Muzak" album by M--the album that has "Pop Muzik" on it, which could be considered the first new wave/synth pop hit.

I think you're starting to see how this track ended up sounding like it does.  Though, I can't answer the question of why there seems to be a handful of bees that are flying back and forth across the stereo spectrum...or why the occasional brass sounds like it was burned in a tragic fire.  I mean, I made those sounds do those things--but I don't have a thematic reason for having done so.  (Sometimes, I just embrace happy accidents and allow myself to like incongruent things.  Blame neurodivergence if you'd like.)  

Somehow, I ended up with a track that is somehow simultaneous deep but simple, downtempo but at a surprisingly quick tempo, atmospheric but still with forward momentum.  

In other words, I made an Interbay track.  They don't always make sense--but hopefully they're never dull.

"Xylyl" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

First of all--the algorithm has done yesterday's track a bit dirty.  Maybe the unpronounceable name has limited the number of people it gets recommended to--but "Xylyl" is a track deserving more listens than just 14 (which it has as I type this)...so, even before checking out today's Interbay track, take a couple moments to give that one a listen...then come back here and give that same love to "I Can See The Light."  

Now then...(thank you, for those of you who actually did that!)...here's a little bit about "I Can See The Light".  This is synth pop with horns (both synth horns and heavily filtered 'real" brass) and a rock song structure.  In other words, once again, it's an Interbay track.  

I think what will get the most attention in this track are the vocals.  No spoken word narrators on this track, this is proper singing from a proper singer...bluesy and full of emotion.  (And taken completely out of context, which I hope is enough to keep Icarus safe for their efforts here.)  

My favorite part is probably the tom tom heavy drum break with chopped up vocal samples flying back and forth.  Reminds me of the sometimes dubby sounding middle breaks found in certain Led Zeppelin songs--which, you have to admit, is an odd thing to say about a synth pop tune made in 2025.    

So, if you like the poppier or rock-leaning Interbay tracks...or you're a trainspotter who might be shocked by the audacity displayed here...or you just enjoy the crazy rollercoaster that Interbay takes you on every single day (so far!)...I think you'll like "I Can See The Light".  (I also think that you'll like "Xylyl"--though they are quite different adventures entirely.)

I Advise You Not To Touch Me

(First off--once again, the algorithm has been unkind to a random Interbay track--yesterday's drop, "Hostilities."  So, if you could give THAT a listen...like it if you do, then come back and check out today's track.  Thanks!)  

A bit premature, this one, yes?  

I mean--it is only September, which means rain here in Seattle.  Plenty of time to enjoy before the icy winds of January come (and even in January, it's not so bad here in the Emerald City.  I grew up in Wisconsin, where they have a word for Seattle winters.  "Unseasonable.")  

This track has been germinating since the heat of summer (felt more in our trip to Wisconsin this year, oh irony.)  I read something about the microgenre of "coldwave" that reframed that term for me by saying that the 1988 song "Julia" by the French band Asylum Party was the purest "coldwave" song ever.  

That song, with lyrics about Winston Smith's idealized but betrayed young lover in Orwell's 1984, is crisp and minimal post-punk, lead bass, some post-punk processed guitar and a keyboard that I can only describe as "petulant" (though you might have guessed that just from knowing they're French) all over the most basic of drum machine presets, which never changes throughout the song--like an early DangerScience track. ;)  If you need a word for the vocals, I'd say "plaintive."  (Can you tell I used to write music reviews?)

I had never heard the song before, never even heard of the band before--but if that's what coldwave is, then I want Interbay to be (among many other things) capable of making coldwave music.    

So, I had a target in mind.  And "January" is what I've come up wth.  And, like every other track that I have an intended target in mind, the end result sounds like...Interbay.  

If anything, there's too much energy in this track.  The drums are actually trying.  It lurches from an oddly awkward beat to almost disco/rock.  The synths are doing a bunch of different things, none of them could be described as petulant (or French, for that matter.)  

I do like the lyrics.  I do think they'd be better if I'd sung them--and I'm adding this to the list of tracks I want to revisit once I get back to being more comfortable singing on Interbay tracks.  

But, I think you can feel the inspiration here (though, you may need to check out the Asylum Party track to agree) and even if it isn't purely coldwave...I like it.  It is a solid post-punk track, at the very least...and a good addition to the (evergrowing) Interbay catalog.  Indeed, I liked it enough to drop it here, in September, rather than store it in The Vault for when it might seem more thematic.

...and I'm sure I'll revisit coldwave more in the future, potentially based on this winter's weather. ;)

"January" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

I do love it when your brain just locks into an idea and it feels effortless to create something.  

I also like it when MY brain does that, too!  And that's what happened with "Quibble"--the latest Interbay track to drop exclusively here on SoundCloud.    

At 114bpm, it grooves instead of sprints.  The palette of sound colors is limited to just a few and the grind of repetition is a feature on this track, not a bug.  There is progression and there is acceleration, as the energy level of the song does built throughout the tracks length.  

And the lyrics construct a narrative that is about storytelling techniques and escaping a seemingly inevitable fate--"the magic of quibbles."  That sure feels like a worthy topic to make an Interbay song about!  

Is there at least a little bit of Rufus Du Sol influence here?  I think so.  Your mileage may vary, of course.  

"Keep your eyes out for those sly quibbles."  

Heading into the weekend, this slightly dark but still worthy of an enthusiastic dance track feels perfectly timed.  Hopefully you'll give this one a listen, a like, a repost and share.  Add it to a groovy dance playlist.  Leave a comment.

If you'll look, there's nearly 500 original tracks in the back catalog of Interbay here--and all of these have been posted one per day for nearly 500 consecutive days. Worth it?  I think it is...though some may quibble with that admittedly biased opinion.

"Quibble" *SoundCloud Exclusive*

Imagine shopping in one of those incredible record stores that seems to have everything that was ever made hiding, unorganized, in a series of crates barely kept safe in a damp basement that smells exactly as you'd imagined wet cardboard and dusty vinyl would smell like.  The crates are stacked so high, and the space between rows is so narrow, that catastrophe seems inevitable and you're wondering if those towers of music would happen to fall on top of you, how many years would it be before someone found your body?  (And would that improve the smell?)  

And imagine, in a treasure trove that would make the most niche northern soul trainspotter squeal with joy, you find a record that you'd never heard of before.  A female vocal'd mellow soul classic, coming in at a shuffling 105bpm and featuring organs, strings, and a rather psychedelic guitar.  The track is rhythmic, but not in your face.  It definitely feels like a smart European soft soul track from the 1960s--just enough of that mellow pop sheen (and plenty of reverb) all over it.    

The name on the faded label says that the song title is "Goodbye My Love" by a band you've never heard of before.  Interbay.  Not a lot of other information can be found on the label, other than it seems to be the product of PLW Records, which you also have never heard of.  

You take this curious thing to a nearby listening station and you drop the needle on it.  The vinyl has definitely seen some wear, so even a good cleaning to make it a bit less dusty might not make it sound pristine.  Being a production of a certain time, there are interesting choices made when it comes to the stereo spectrum and an almost haphazard attention to the mix overall, at times.  

But, you think it is rather charming...and you decide to add it to your pile of precious vinyl you'll be purchasing today.  You can't wait to bring it home, where you can start to do some research on it--but before you do, the cashier does something interesting.  

He doesn't charge you anything for this particular track.  You don't want to alert him to his mistake, but he volunteers that "that one isn't what you think it is...so, you can just have it."

As long as it is a groovy retro soul pop tune, you're quite happy to take it off their hands.  

(And, if you haven't found one of these Interbay "Goodbye My Love" 7" singles out there in the wild--and, I have to say that it would be extremely unlikely that you would--at least now, you can listen to it.  Find out if you like it, and if you do, you should give it a like--repost it, share it, add it to a playlist, leave a comment, etc.  And follow this page for more Interbay.  This is the 499th day that a never-before-heard Interbay track has been posted here on Soundcloud, so it does make a difference for you if you follow along and can keep up with it all--AND it helps me, as you can imagine. (I mean, I hope you like EVERY Interbay track--but this one in particular, especially considering the positive response that "Kick Off Your Shoes"--the most recent soul-style Interbay track--has received over the past couple of months--it is, after all, the most listened to Interbay track of all time.)
