I just noticed that the thumbnail art for this song, and the gradient shading banner derived from it, almost make this seem like it could be Valentine's Day related.  It wasn't designed to be--but, I bet, for the right Valentine, this could work for that.  Dark, scary, romantic...yes, yes, and yes!

I feel a bit bad for yesterday's track, "Factory Full of Sparks".  It got posted REALLY late and that may be why it is struggling, compared to most Interbay tracks, for plays.  So, when you're done checking out THIS track...maybe give that one a listen too!  

...because they are a bit related, these two songs.  There's an industrial (as in machinery and factories) element to both tracks.  Yesterdays track is more of an uptempo dance track, "Hydraulic" is more of a midtempo darkwave rock tune (with some synths.)  Also, both have spoken word as the main vocal element (I swear--I am getting VERY close to starting to sing on some of these tracks myself, as I've promised for a long time now...  See also "Towers" ep, another example that I swear is coming soon and has been promised for a long time.  

Would this song do better with a Robert Smith-like vocal?  I think it would...but other than a very "lack of affect" reading of "YEAH!" (which I think you'll hear twice in this track), I think the spoken words work for what I was going for...  

The theme of those words and the name of this track are borrowed from an unfinished song from my Cremation Dance/DangerScience days, called "The Hydraulic Heart".  I don't remember the words of that track off the top of my head--I'm sure they're scribbled down in some notebook somewhere, but I don't remember them as being terribly profound or anything.  "You can't stop the hydraulic heart" feels like it would have been the chorus, so I dropped that in here for an easter egg that maybe two people on the planet might find amusing.  

The whole reason I thought of "hydraulic" for this track was that the drum loop (all other drums are played/written) had a little "cha-cha-cha" that I remember trying to program on a borrowed Oberheim DMX, with all of the toms tuned down.  So, I used "Hydraulic" for the temporary project name...and, without having come up with anything better, I borrowed the general theme from the song I tried to write decades earlier, here.  (I'm guessing it won't miss it at this point.)  

Strangely, this song ends up with a pretty decent structure, musically.  Hadn't given it much thought as I was coming up with some musical ideas for this...but there's a chorus and verses (and, most importantly, I'm not the only one who might know where they are!)  

Yeah, I think this turned out to be a damn good Interbay track, especially for those of you who are less fond of the dance side of Interbay and more fond of black clothes, black eyeliner, and clove cigs.  (You're welcome!  Though, I really only ever got into the black clothes and the music that goes with those outfits.)

Good Enough For You

I do love it when your brain just locks into an idea and it feels effortless to create something.  

I also like it when MY brain does that, too!  And that's what happened with "Quibble"--the latest Interbay track to drop exclusively here on SoundCloud.    

At 114bpm, it grooves instead of sprints.  The palette of sound colors is limited to just a few and the grind of repetition is a feature on this track, not a bug.  There is progression and there is acceleration, as the energy level of the song does built throughout the tracks length.  

And the lyrics construct a narrative that is about storytelling techniques and escaping a seemingly inevitable fate--"the magic of quibbles."  That sure feels like a worthy topic to make an Interbay song about!  

Is there at least a little bit of Rufus Du Sol influence here?  I think so.  Your mileage may vary, of course.  

"Keep your eyes out for those sly quibbles."  

Heading into the weekend, this slightly dark but still worthy of an enthusiastic dance track feels perfectly timed.  Hopefully you'll give this one a listen, a like, a repost and share.  Add it to a groovy dance playlist.  Leave a comment.
