Does anyone remember earlier this year when I took the Phantom Laboratories West mobile unit down to Portland, Oregon and made a few tracks while there?  (Probably not, but it happened!)  

This is one of the tracks that I brought with me.  I had most of the music done, actually, but I still didn't know what the track "was"--so, I gave it the temporary project name of "PDX" (the airport code for Portland, Oregon.  And I must have just plain forgotten about it, because I hadn't gone back to it since...until last night.    

I changed the arrangement, I added one new synth, I had fun with some fills and builds and...STILL didn't know what it was.  

It sounded really early techno pop-y, but with modern house/breaks instead of "cheesy Atari sounds" (props to Crash for that description of the retro sounding techno pop drums.)  The synth sounds I chose were a bit on the annoying side of sound design, but not unlistenably so--giving the track almost an 8-bit feel (except for the drums, as I've already said.)  

What would go with that?  Probably some robot/computer voice work--but that is a well that I drink from far too often.  

...but that answer came to me so quickly, I didn't want to dismiss it out of hand.  

So, I gave it some thought...and I realized that, in pop cuture, there are only a few truly recognizable robotic voices out there...and, perhaps, the MOST recognizable one is, of course, Professor Falken's unleashed Joshua program--the one that almost brought nuclear armageddon to the entire Earth (if not for guilt ridden Matthew Broderick and plucky Ally Sheedy.)  

Was it too obvious?  You'll have to tell me.  I think it works.  (My favorite part is late in the song, when you start to hear and feel some sub bass rumble--that's not a musical part...that is the sound they used when a nuclear bomb landed on a target--all of those circles on the various maps sounded like what's deep in the background of this track, towards the end.  

With the Doomsday Clock at the closest time before midnight ever registered, perhaps it is an important lesson to learn--that when it comes to Global Thermonuclear War, the only winning move is not to play.  

And wouldn't we all rather play a nice game of chess?  

Be like Joshua.  Learn.  Then shut down.  Then play chess.
