This isn't punk...this is a primitive nuclear device of a song.  Will it make you popular just to listen to this song?  Well, I can't guarantee anything...but it's definitely worth a shot!  

I started off just wanting to make a simple little piano-based pop song and, in typical Interbay fashion, it has spiralled into a nearly nine-minute suite that dives into enough music genres that the tags box here on SoundCloud is bursting at the seams.  

This is the first time I built a song using FL Studio's Chord Sequencer function.  First time using DirectWave drums.  And I had a nice little 3 minute tune, simple instrumentation and a pleasant vibe--nothing headturning or award winning, but it was...swell.  

...but I needed to match it with a vocal.  And I didn't have a clear direction to pursue for a vocal.  I could try to piece it together from fragments I'd find in various royalty-free sample packs, I could find an acapella that might endanger Icarus (poor, poor Icarus...I need to let their healing process continue a little longer), or I could find some spoken word stuff (or MAKE some spoken word stuff--though I'm still not quite ready to sing on my own tracks yet.)  I decided to make that decision after getting some sleep--and I saved the instrumental file under the name "popularizer"--merely because it was, as it was designed to be, a pop song.  

I woke up today (obviously...it would be concerning if I was still asleep and typing this, much less everything else I've done today) and that's when the madness happened.  The temporary project title "popularizer" had basted itself in my brain juices--and I remembered a tv show that I watched and loved--it was cancelled after only one season.  It had some really important people involved with it...and a couple of people who would go on to become well known.  But, it is a cult tv show for a very small set of...getting older all the time...people.  (People who probably aren't following me on SoundCloud to see what distant memories I'll dredge up from the depths next.)  

So, you're going to hear a lot of old references--as I grabbed some dialog snippets and tossed them into the pot.  But, there's probably something about the "just starting high school and not knowing where (or how) you fit in" vibe that hopefully everyone can appreciate.  

From there, I just let the song build itself, really.  I tried to keep a structure in mind (there is something that acts like a repeated chorus, and I could point to parts of the song and tell you what I intended them to be...but, if I have to tell you that for you to recognize it, then did I succeed in what my intentions were?  I'm not sure.  

In the end, I've come up with yet another Interbay musical Biollante (deep reference either for Godzilla fans or, more specifically, for fans of fan made short videos--as I just watched the three episodes of Lost Utopia's "Project Monster" series on YouTube yesterday...and I am a fan and I hope they'll make more!!!--about a world with Godzilla and other kaiju running amok.  All of those pieces and parts are now embedded in the end result (seriously, go watch those shorts!)  

...an end result that isn't very much like what I started with this morning, but I think it is still a pop song (although, like every Interbay track, it is definirtely mutant pop).  There's indie rock, neurofunk, post-punk, synth pop, new wave, adult contemporary...and so much more to discover.  Just take a stick and turn that rock over...you'll find a whole world of madness underneath it!

This song was originally written as an acoustic track with just piano and vocals, and has been through multiple levels of feedback to reach its current stage. I have tried to approach overcoming isolation and depression in a way that is generally relatable, and to build to an optimistic conclusion. It's in Db Major, which is the musical equivalent of someone putting on a happy face.

I Advise You Not To Touch Me

I do love it when your brain just locks into an idea and it feels effortless to create something.  

I also like it when MY brain does that, too!  And that's what happened with "Quibble"--the latest Interbay track to drop exclusively here on SoundCloud.    

At 114bpm, it grooves instead of sprints.  The palette of sound colors is limited to just a few and the grind of repetition is a feature on this track, not a bug.  There is progression and there is acceleration, as the energy level of the song does built throughout the tracks length.  

And the lyrics construct a narrative that is about storytelling techniques and escaping a seemingly inevitable fate--"the magic of quibbles."  That sure feels like a worthy topic to make an Interbay song about!  

Is there at least a little bit of Rufus Du Sol influence here?  I think so.  Your mileage may vary, of course.  

"Keep your eyes out for those sly quibbles."  

Heading into the weekend, this slightly dark but still worthy of an enthusiastic dance track feels perfectly timed.  Hopefully you'll give this one a listen, a like, a repost and share.  Add it to a groovy dance playlist.  Leave a comment.
