This song was originally written as an acoustic track with just piano and vocals, and has been through multiple levels of feedback to reach its current stage. I have tried to approach overcoming isolation and depression in a way that is generally relatable, and to build to an optimistic conclusion. It's in Db Major, which is the musical equivalent of someone putting on a happy face.

I grew up in Wisconsin at "the right time"--but it still took me a little while before I became fully aware of both the classic house music coming out of Chicago (I did my best to make up for lost time, of course.)  Meanwhile, in nearby Detroit, what was originally a "branch" on the tree of house music was being defined, that would be known as techno (and then, techno would pull itself further and further away from what people defined as "house" music--becoming its own tree.)  

If there is a specific inspiration for today's Interbay track, it is the original intersection of Chicago House and Detroit Techno--and for that, I aimed at Juan Atkins, as Model 500, and the track "No UFOs".  

And, as someone who actually watched Jack Webb's "Project UFO" tv show when it aired, it isn't surprising that my take on this sound might be more hopeful to the whole concept of unidentified flying objects.  

Now, as usual for anything that Interbay is aiming at--the target isn't hit dead center...that is true here, again.  Probably because of the machines used, "No UFOs" feels like it takes more from Electro than "UFO Report" does.  (Certainly, the nature of the vocals is VERY different.)  

...meaning, once again, I scored a direct bullseye in making a track that sounds more like...Interbay...than anything else.  (Which, I'd say, is probably a feature not a bug...and the whole point, really.)    

So, enjoy some very dry Dragnet-style line readings over some retro house vibes with a bit of a techno edge to it--but, in actually, a pretty chill ride.

I do love it when your brain just locks into an idea and it feels effortless to create something.  

I also like it when MY brain does that, too!  And that's what happened with "Quibble"--the latest Interbay track to drop exclusively here on SoundCloud.    

At 114bpm, it grooves instead of sprints.  The palette of sound colors is limited to just a few and the grind of repetition is a feature on this track, not a bug.  There is progression and there is acceleration, as the energy level of the song does built throughout the tracks length.  

And the lyrics construct a narrative that is about storytelling techniques and escaping a seemingly inevitable fate--"the magic of quibbles."  That sure feels like a worthy topic to make an Interbay song about!  

Is there at least a little bit of Rufus Du Sol influence here?  I think so.  Your mileage may vary, of course.  

"Keep your eyes out for those sly quibbles."  

Heading into the weekend, this slightly dark but still worthy of an enthusiastic dance track feels perfectly timed.  Hopefully you'll give this one a listen, a like, a repost and share.  Add it to a groovy dance playlist.  Leave a comment.
