The nice thing about working in electronic dance music is even if you only have a fragment of an idea, you can still create something magical from it!  

As usual, today's Interbay track is ALL OVER THE PLACE when it comes to sounds and vibes--however, this is probably the closest that I've come to pure "house" music in awhile.  

Of course, then you have to nail down WHAT KIND OF HOUSE IS IT?  I don't...Colonial?  

The fragment I had was the "You find yourself in a boat on the river" part.  It came to me in the car, and I raced inside to record it before I forgot it (which happens too much lately, as my working memory is unreliable, at best.)  And that fragment sat, waiting for me to come up with the rest of the song.  I used to always start with the words, which helped me build the scaffolding around the structure implied by those words, when I was songwriting in the LongAgo...but I haven't done that with Interbay--part of the experiment of Interbay is seeing if I could retrain myself to write music first...  Mixed results so far. ;) 

I thought it would be a strummy acoustic guitar indie folk sort of thing--kind of singer-songwriter-y.  But, last night, I found myself hearing it quite differently.  I suppose the spark of inspiration to push me away from indie folk and towards house would be listening to a demo for Roger Sanchez's sample pack.  

I actually knew Roger--back in my dj days, I met him at a Winter Music Conference in Miami Beach one year...and then every year after that, he'd recognize me and we'd talk.  (Until I stopped going to WMC...and stopped dj'ing.)  

There was definitely a vibe that, while different from my original idea, could certainly help that fragment of lyrics and melody I had take shape.  

From there, the puzzle pieces started to fill themselves in rather quicklky.  The blurry on the edge of distortion bass.  The skritchy guitars and the psychedelic disco funk wah-wah guitar licks.  Very brassy brass.  Morse code synths.  All of that to a steady Roger Sanchez-style groove.  

The last two pieces needed to be placed:  How to get proper vocals, from my fragment of an idea, on the track?  And that cheeky something else that all Interbay tracks seem to require (leaving Icarus breathless and paranoid.)  

The first piece was placed when I simply took my scratch vocal and slapped a bunch of Waves vocal harmony all over it--giving it a jazzy neo-Beach Boys feel.  (Yes, underneath all of those electronics--it's me singing.  I've been saying that this day would come for months now--though, here's an Easter Egg for you to track down...this isn't actually the first song to include my voice.  There was one earlier...that nobody noticed (not that they should--most of you don't know what I sound like. ;)   And, for the record, I don't sound like THIS either.)  

The second piece was picked out the moment I realized that I'd subconsciously pinched some words from hit songs by two very famous groups.  I chose to incorporate some heavily processed vocal snippets from one...and chose, wisely, not to include anything from the other.  If you're a fan of the kind of music I like, the snippets are probably obvious.  Hopefully not to the alogorithms, but I'm not making music for them.

This song was originally written as an acoustic track with just piano and vocals, and has been through multiple levels of feedback to reach its current stage. I have tried to approach overcoming isolation and depression in a way that is generally relatable, and to build to an optimistic conclusion. It's in Db Major, which is the musical equivalent of someone putting on a happy face.

I Advise You Not To Touch Me

I do love it when your brain just locks into an idea and it feels effortless to create something.  

I also like it when MY brain does that, too!  And that's what happened with "Quibble"--the latest Interbay track to drop exclusively here on SoundCloud.    

At 114bpm, it grooves instead of sprints.  The palette of sound colors is limited to just a few and the grind of repetition is a feature on this track, not a bug.  There is progression and there is acceleration, as the energy level of the song does built throughout the tracks length.  

And the lyrics construct a narrative that is about storytelling techniques and escaping a seemingly inevitable fate--"the magic of quibbles."  That sure feels like a worthy topic to make an Interbay song about!  

Is there at least a little bit of Rufus Du Sol influence here?  I think so.  Your mileage may vary, of course.  

"Keep your eyes out for those sly quibbles."  

Heading into the weekend, this slightly dark but still worthy of an enthusiastic dance track feels perfectly timed.  Hopefully you'll give this one a listen, a like, a repost and share.  Add it to a groovy dance playlist.  Leave a comment.
