In the second edition of Naughty Natalie's Winter Special called "Krystall Mass" you are going to hear:

– Soundscapes of the Galindez Island, the Antarctic wind, and local seabirds. This was made possible with the kind support of the National Antarctic Scientific Center of Ukraine (also known as the Vernadsky Research Base), to whom I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks and admiration.

– a very recent track by the talented Ukrainian electronic musician Mokri Dereva, also known as my dear friend Yura, who is currently defending the freedom of Ukraine and fights against russian imperialism at the front as a member of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. I want to express my deepest appreciation to Yura, who, even while undertaking such a serious duty, still finds time to pursue his greatest passion.

– a field recording I made a few years ago during a small expedition with friends to the Rusanivski Gardens on the left bank of the Dnipro River in Kyiv, Ukraine. In this recording, my friend Natalka charmingly imitates the melody of "Shchedryk" (“Щедрик” in Ukrainian and known in English as "Carol of the Bells") — a Ukrainian shchedrivka (New Year's song) composed by Mykola Leontovych, a remarkable figure in Ukrainian choral music culture.

While the joyful melody of "Carol of the Bells" is widely recognized, not many know about its initial cultural mission and contribution to Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts in the 1920s. When it traveled the world spreading the word about the Ukrainian fight for its independence as it was being occupied by the Soviets.

In the meantime, its composer Leontovych – one of Ukraine's intellectual and religious elite of the time – stayed behind and became a target of Bolshevik repression. He was tragically assassinated by a KGB agent at his parents' home in Ukraine.

"Shchedryk" originates in Pokrovsk, Donetsk region, where Leontovych collected folklore and arranged its modern version — an area now caught in the midst of fierce battles and turned into a ghost town due to the russian invasion of Ukraine.

The photo shows the Кришталь ("Crystal") sanatorium in Truskavets, a city rich in mineral springs and sanatoriums that are themselves gems of modernist architecture in Ukraine.

Episode 9 (٠٧) features a special original sound piece by guest artist Peter Kirn. Peter is a Berlin-based composer and artist of Lebanese-American heritage. He teaches electronic music and creative technology; he’s a journalist and the writer behind cdm.link. He’a also regularly a host of collaborative performance labs, including most recently collaborations with Sonic Territories and MUTEK. His music is available on various labels including his own Establishment. We had the chance to meet and collaborate during the Sounds of Places residency, and it’s an honor to welcome him to the show with this one hour sound walk tracing textures from Jordan to Palestine and Lebanon.

In Peter’s own words:
« This adaptation for radio traces a path from the King Hussein Bridge through the West Bank, Bethlehem, and occupied Jerusalem, and to the seaside and port in Beirut. It’s partially performed, partially mixed, including reworkings of performances at Manifest:IO and Riwaq Berlin. Two tracks included come from the Palestinian National Archives (thanks to Basel Naouri). Otherwise, original material and field recordings, including recordings made as part of a residency with Wonder Cabinet Bethlehem working in the Cremisan Valley, and additional recordings by Sofia Lambrou and Ibrahim Owais. This comes as a plea to act, to stop the violence across the region. »

Amsterdam’s Ratherlost crew has spent the past few years perfecting the art of the marathon rave. Their home base is Lofi, a cavernous warehouse where sound, light, and visuals fuse into long-haul journeys that stretch well past the 18-hour mark. But epic runtimes mean nothing without the right hands at the controls, and Ratherlost has proven it knows how to curate, pace, and execute like pros.

Lofi’s two-floor setup allows for shifting moods: daylight hours wander through deep, dubby techno, slowly morphing into faster, syncopated rhythms as night tightens its grip. Pacing is everything in a space like this. And when it comes to the craft of pacing, few do it better than Bas Dobbelaer.

Bas is one of our favorite DJs for a reason. He understands that a warm-up set is an architecture rather than just background noise. It shapes the room, sets the tone, and welcomes dancers into the story. The mix we’re thrilled to share today was recorded live at Ratherlost’s Easter Sunday session at Lofi, where Bas shared the bill with artists like Aaron J, Na Nich & Vera Logdanidi, Aurora Halal, DVS1, upsammy, Occa, Agonis, Dasha Rush, Seb H, and Oscar Mulero. Quite the roster.

In the face of that stacked lineup, Bas delivered a masterclass in restraint and elegance. His three-hour set unfolds like a novel, tracing dub techno’s DNA across the past two decades. The vibe is timeless, spacious, and beautifully measured, a perfect example of how to warm up a warehouse without blowing the doors off too soon.
This is precisely the kind of DJing we live for: subtle yet commanding, hypnotic yet full of life. Clear your next 180 minutes. Plug in. And get a little Ratherlost yourself.
