This is a peaceful winter-themed track co-composed by Waterflame and pftq. Ironically the song was named without any awareness to what day the winter solstice actually was, so it was just pure coincidence. There was a bit of a tug-of-war between the song going in Waterflame's happier direction and pftq's more haunting direction, and it eventually became something of a Nightmare Before Christmas sort of feel, which turned out very well.

This track was a nightmare to get finished and is basically the most Frankenstein collab ever - everything from project tempos being off by fractions of BPM to random source files being panned off-center - but it was definitely worth it, and we feel like we pulled out all the stops in making this feel like an epic koto music battle - like something out of a Japanese anime. Almost everything you hear from the string plucking to knuckle/wood percussion is koto with the exception of obvious additions like the flute, kick drum, and bass guitar that come later as the song progresses. This will be ear candy to those who have really good earphones/headphones - tons of detail and lots of frills, scratches, sub-melodies the more closely you listen. Funny thing is this probably has more influence from psytrance music like DNA (ie Angel Dust has that plucky sound), so it's like if you took that and merged it with something like East Wind / Uttara-Kuru. Short percussion-driven piece inspired by Dune and... Crash Bandicoot. It actually didn't start off with that as the intent, but we wanted to do a jungle-themed track and had just been debating which version of the Crash boulder music sounded better (after listening to @JoshMancell's pre-console stuff). The Dune part just snuck in there after playing with the percussion and low/deep choirs.  As a bonus, it loops like level music.

Collab between Waterflame and pftq:
Fun track made in 24 hours. Last few tracks had a lot of influence from goa / psy-trance, so we leaned into that and tried to actually make a full 8-min trance track this time. Trance tends to be long and repetitive (and Waterflame initially bawked at making an 8-min track that just repeats), so this track basically has all the stuff we like to listen to in trance minus the stuff that we don't like. And yeah there's a koto in there again. :P

Goa Codex (Waterflame vs pftq)

Grass is always greener on the other side. This is sort of a homage to Bosa's older stuff at Newgrounds, which had this kind of feel. I listened to a lot of his music when I was younger and wanted to see if I can make something in similar style. Not sure what the genre is (some of his tracks were bluegrass, but none of the other tracks in the category sound like this).

Green Grass

This is not technically a cover - we diverged from the original when possible and went out of our way to make sure no melody was actually exactly the same (or Dillon would just be flagged again) - but it obviously is based heavily on the original Demon Slayer music.  

This is the first track worked on by all 3 of us (Waterflame, Denny Schneidemesser, pftq). It started with pftq for the first pass, then Waterflame for a second pass along with drums/guitar for the Climax and First Battle sequence, Denny making the strings and brass come alive in the Defeat and guitar-driven parts of the Climax sequence, and finally pftq doing the final passes and hundreds of iterations to get YouTube to stop thinking it's copyrighted. Big thanks to Dillon himself as well for providing a lot of valuable feedback to improve each draft.

Third song in the series of guitar and strings inspired by Bosa's music at Newgrounds (whatever genre that is). The name comes from trying to emulate one of the songs categorized under bluegrass but ending up sounding nothing like other songs we looked up in bluegrass, so we called it green instead. Originally the first two songs were meant to be stems for collabs, but they ended up getting finished before Waterflame got around to them. Third time's the charm!

Greenest Grass (Waterflame vs pftq)

After Anime Expo, we wanted to see if we could emulate stereotypical anime / jpop style music for fun. The first 20 seconds was started by Waterflame with some piano and strings, but he didn't have time to keep working before his travels, so pftq ended up doing the rest + the overall arranging/mixing. Unfortunately, July was a heavy travel month, so the track didn't get as much time as we wanted, and it ended up sort of just being finished more from lack of time. It was a fun experiment cut short, but maybe down the line we might revisit this.

Anime Medley (Waterflame vs pftq)

Chaotic, over-the-top plucky guitars with tons of scratches/scrapes and lots of ear candy! This one is mainly Waterflame doing the drums and pftq playing the guitar as if it were a koto, although there are obvious moments where styles converge. In some ways a spiritual successor to the Koto Breaker song (or a warmup to Koto Breaker 2). Some inspiration from Osamuraisan for how much plucking and scraping his guitar has.

We couldn't agree on the ending, so Waterflame also has an alternate, more electronic/rock-ish version on Spotify/Bandcamp!

Japanese flute and koto music inspired by the hichiriki in Silent Hill f's trailer! pftq actually has a real hichiriki he plays, so we weren't going to let that one go! We ended up pulling elements from all the collab tracks we've been making this year - Koto Breaker, Anime Medley, Guitar Chronicle, etc with this one taking a much more eastern/new-age/Uttara-Kuru feel than any we've done so far.

Koto Goa Mangetsu

One last track by Waterflame and pftq before going into the new year! A homage to the original Wizards in Winter video complete with an animation of the Christmas lights! Sadly Santa didn't make it into 2023.

Lot of influences from Chrono Cross as well for the intro, which came from imagining that mood/atmosphere blended with the Carol of the Bells.  The rest of the song rifts mainly on Carol of the Bells but with some rock/metal treatment, similar to what Trans-Siberian Orchestra does with their Christmas music!

Lunar Fractals (Koto Mix) (Waterflame vs pftq)

This was the hardest track we've worked on in a long time. Big thanks to Diana Garnet for collaborating with us on this one! It was a huge honor working with her, and it's hard to imagine anyone else who could've done as an amazing job with the vocals!

The composition was another joint effort between Waterflame and pftq, with Waterflame working mainly on the guitars/bass + percussion while pftq working mainly on the chords/harmonies, vocal melody, and mastering.

Made this originally as a stem for this month's collab, but ended up making a whole song while waiting on Waterflame to do a pass on it. He may still get to it, but I thought this was also nice enough to stand on its own as a separate track. Influences are mainly 2 artists I used to listen to on Newgrounds - XsToRmEr1 (Flames of the Sky) and Zero-Bass (the Trigger name is a homage to his naming scheme - Lighting Trigger, Atomic Trigger, Death Trigger, etc).

This is built out of the same patches as Lunar Fractals, so it has a similar sound. You can consider it a more upbeat cousin of that track with a bit less melancholy.
